So, don't know if you'll see this, but if you do KidKulit, which is better in your opinion: stand alone instruments like these, or virtual midi instruments with a music program (ableton, logic, etc)?
@SmileThalia Honestly, I think it boils down to a matter of preference. Both methods are capable of producing fantastic tracks. Midi is a bit over my head, so I don't delve into it too much. However, software is extremely flexible. On the flip side, there is something to be said about playing actual physical hardware. It's tactile, immediate, satisfying. So really, the choice is yours. Either path is a good one though. Good luck!
I have the Akai XR20... ....>Akai Minak..........Korg KP3, A Casio keyboard lower end but great for learning how to play....which I still need to work on! Recently I got Presonus Studio One Artist... So I'll be able to see the best from both worlds....
@Oleschool619 I have loads of those old Casio \ Yamaha toy keyboards from the 80s. They are great fun and produce some unique sounds. I always say it doesn't matter what you use... it's how you use it... and that you just go out there and do it! Have fun :)
Awesome work I subscribed to your channel Im digging all the songs so far! 2 questions though Can the kp3 actually save multiple songs onto it? I'm trying to figure out if I would have to somehow export each song after I finish of if I can save a few on the kp3? And where would you recommend buying music equipment from? I basically want your entire setup lol
@ThatGOONfromLA The KP3 can save multiple samples (for our purposes, that could be entire songs if you sampled them that way) that get assigned to one of the four pads. How much you can save depends on your SD card, 2GB being the max it can handle. Truth be told, I buy a lot of my gear secondhand (Craigslist mostly). You can find gear for significantly cheaper than new. And I've had nothing but good experiences dealing locally. I also hit up Paul's Boutique in Toronto for "vintage" gear.
@KidKulit that is really incredible how you got everything to sync up (well documented tempo glitches aside). I was amazed to see this setup because I have been working on a sort of group project involving a kaossilator plugged into a microkorg. My question was, where are you running the master loop? Also, any tips for running the kaossilator into the synth without using the global audio thru setting turned on? I can't get any bass response when actually modulating the kaossilator.
@cjathsyd The master loop is being recorded in to, stored on to and triggered from the KP3. As far as I know, the audio thru is the only way to get the kaossilator sound into your microKORG. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Good luck!
@YouCantClickMyName I suppose if you really wanted to, you could try to program some patches that sounded like drums and then sequence them elsewhere. but no, not really conventional beats.
Wow, all your other videos are good, but I love this one. Just another reason I can't wait til I can afford to get some of the gear you have. Great stuff though.
awesome job! waiting for my kaossilator pro to come in the mai, i have a microkorg. i really like the look of the akai xr-20, seems easy to use! are all of these easy to connect?
@mereshell nice. I'm saving up for a kaossilator pro. the xr-20 IS easy to use and sounds really great. fairly easy... i had to get a mini mixer to do it up right.
The Kaossilator, XR-20, and microKORG are all being sent to the KP3 with a Belkin Rock Star Multiple Headphone Splitter (poor man's mixer). Then the KP3 and the Roland Juno G (off camera) are being sent to a Behringer Xenyx 1204FX mixer (off camera) and the mixer is being sent to my computer for recording.
The splitter is plugged into the KP3 (had to add a 1/8 to RCA adapter to plug into KP3 input) Then all the instruments are plugged into the splitter with 1/8 to 1/4 cables. Pretty simple + cheap solution!
Not at all. I'm not using just the left or just the right RCA input on the KP3 though. I'm using an RCA to 1/8 adapter for the KP3 input. When the need calls for it, I add a 1/8 to 1/4 adapter to that cable when I'm only sampling one instrument.
I have a whole gang of adapters I'm always having to switch between. But they can all be found quite easily and bought for cheap. Good luck!
@KidKulit haha yeah. another reason why im going to go with the mixer is cause i cant find the headphone splitter anywhere but amazon and im ordering off of b&H because they have 300$ kp3's
I think I got my headphone splitter at the apple store of all places. It wasn't the best solution but it worked until I was able to get a mixer. $300 for the KP3 is a great deal! have fun with it :) i know i do
The Kaossilator is only used once right at the beginning when I sample an arpeggiator pattern off of it. The XR-20 is then used to sample some drum beats. The microKORG is then used to sample an arpeggiator bassline and then used for live pads. There is also a Roland Juno-G off camera that I used to play live piano parts. The KP3 is recording all samples as I play them and being used for FX as well. Wall-E is just there for show :) So everything you see is used at some point! Thanks for watching
bro ur sick im bout to get an akai xr 20 r they worth the money cus its lookin a lil pricey but im sooo down for it i jus need the truth from a master lol
well I'd hardly call myself a master! to be honest, I've mostly just been using the XR-20 for the sounds, haven't gotten into programming it yet... it's limited but pretty decent for a starter drum machine.
Yeah it's definitely part of the process. I still make my music on computers (at least until my new gear gets here in a month or so) and I almost always start out making a song and adding things onto it until I decide I like where the second half of the song is going better. I then delete (or save to a different file) the first parts and continue on with the remainder. No one hears when I mess up on the computer though :)
haha true say... I don't mind showing off my errors... and I have much respect for people who make music on computers (I do from time to time) but prefer hardware
This is really good. I'm not going to lie, I definitely noticed the mess up (that actually did go for a while lol) but I noticed myself really enjoying it especially in the second half of the song. Good track.
THANK YOU! I debated not uploading it because of the mess up in the middle, but decide to let it go. Mistakes are part of the creative process. So I'm glad you enjoyed it regardless :)
Very nice man. I wish I could get all that. I only got a microkorg and the ds-10. Im still trying to find out how to hook it up so they both work. would you happen to know?
I put all my gear through a mixer. But I think you could probably hook up your DS (headphone out) to the audio in jack on your microKORG. Just find the right cables. Good luck! and thanks!
i need a small cheap mixer. thanks for reminding my. and i have the right cords but i donno how. oh well. ive decided to just use a seperate amp for now. why had i not thought of either of those earlier?
Cheap mixers are easy to find. Try your local Craigslist. And hooking up your DS to your microKORG is fairly easy too. Just read the manual. Give it a go! :)
I'm dying for a microKORG XL... but probably won't be able to pick one up for a few more months... but I think these toys are more than enough to tide me over until then ;)
Nice sounds. I like it once it really gets into its own swing. With the claps and synth tounds it almost sounds like a favorite producer of mine 'Mount Kimbie' Obviously different. But still reminiscent.
How do you record your audio for your videos? Do you have a camera than you can plug your audio into?
Thanks man! Your vids have been very inspirational. So that means a lot to me coming from "the pro". Real slow start (and the screw up in the middle is annoying) but it picks up halfway through. Still need to work on my timing.
I use a MacBook Pro to record all my YouTube videos. I send the line out from my audio source directly into the line in on my computer. Start Photobooth and everything records in sync and sounds great. My camera angles are limiting b\c of space, but it gets the job done.
Can you plug the audio outs of the Kaosscillator into the mix-ins of the microkorg?
