Dang it Disney, why'd you have to use the Japanese soundtrack and eliminate all of the one-liners in the 2010 re-release?! Now I have to look a copy of the 2003 DVD on Amazon! I really think that they should at least have an option to switch between the original 2003 audio and the 2010 audio on the DVD, because they practically depleted the movie's quality by 45%. I really liked the new score.
@Genogenesis7 The reason why Disney did that was because they probably overreacted to the purists who detested those changes and were probably trying to appeal to them. Personally, though, I agree that the new score really added to the film and I did like a lot of those one-liners. They really brought a lot of character to minor parts like the pirates. It's for those reasons why I'm holding on to my 2003 copy as well. Good luck at finding one!
Loved this movie since i saw it in it's fansub tape when i was in high school 16 years ago and had a copy of it since including the soundtrack, this is another outstanding masterpiece from Miyazaki. Without this there would be no Atlantis The Lost Empire, Avatar or that Ducktales episode where he has a floating island.
@Johnlindsey289 Agreed. I actually forgot that ATLANTIS was sort of loosely inspired by this film. But if so, it's not surprising to see filmmakers inspired by his work, not just Cameron, but Disney too. Yes, some can argue that both are imitations of Miyazaki, but it all depends on how well they do with it.
Do you remember that one Ducktales episode with the floating island? I'm sure some of the Japanese animators at TSM in Tokyo got ideas for that based on Laputa. Cameron is a Ghibli fan and did borrowed from alot of stuff including this movie with the same floating islands, floating rock substance and similar robots. Ghibli has influenced many filmmakers.
I'm such a fuckin' purist in pretty much EVERY other regard, but I know when something is better, and THIS is better. Hate it when I have to side with Disney. Wish there were a Japanese dub with this music.
@Daruqe It would definitely be cool to hear the Japanese version with this score. It was hard for me to go back to the original after being so spoiled with it. For me, it really brought the dub to life. Not that I didn't already like it; I love it to this day--Dola and Muska in particular--but the rescore was what truly made it memorable. Seeing the 2010 version without the new score made the dub feel more... empty and less fresh. Miyazaki himself even said that he likes the new score too!
hmmmm actually I never knew the updated version (was it in Diney's dubbed release of the movie? never watched that) - but it sounds pretty nice, pretty... mature, somehow. though I like the original version better (cause I watched Laputa like 20 times and to me the original score just belongs to the film) :)
This rerecording of CASTLE IN THE SKY has taken a lot of undeserved flak from diehard purists of the original. Despite the argument that Hisaishi's original creation was, and still is, a masterpiece, it by no means justifies the backlash against the rerecording. If anything, I feel that it really enhances the movie in many ways; and on album it is especially wonderful to listen to. This opening track really sets the tone for the rescore.
@heWHOstomps Yes, I absolutely know how it feels. While some of them may have understandable points — there were a couple of added-in lines that did seem a bit extraneous at times, but I honestly wasn't bothered by any of them. In the end, I still enjoyed the Disney dub, and the new score—but I also liked the Japanese version, too. Does that mean I am not a true fan? Of course not; everybody has their own preferences.
@Turnajon yeah, the litte extra lines are a bit weird at times. i agree. but nevertheless all versions of this movie are amazing. this movie is a work of art along with its score, and its in my top 3 =D
@heWHOstomps Definitely. My other top five are MONONOKE, TOTORO, KIKI, and WHISPER, but this gets a lot of replay value from me. Plus, I still enjoyed much of the pirates' dialogue and Sheeta's pirate talk—those felt like they were expanding on the characters to me, and overall I thought the English VAs did an excellent job. I really can't see what is so wrong with this dub. Is it perfect? No. But it's not at all bad.
Did Avatar by Cameron reminded you of CITS (Laputa) in some parts? Cameron is a fan of animation and anime and used some references/elements of CITS with the similar floating rock material like the Unobtanium and of course the floating mountains a homage to the ones in this movie.

@shineefan101amg Which version? The one with the extensive soundtrack or the one with the more simple, electronic score? Just curious.
