Britain created the West as we now know it, but Germany wasn't united untill 1870, and was then blocked mainly by the UK to acquire an empire, one of the causes for WWI. They did have a couple of large colonies in africa and in the pacific by 1914. The US as usual joined the war after millions of German soldiers had already died and 4/5th of their army was stuck in Russia. It was Einstein, a German jew, who convinced Roosevelt to build the A-bomb, which eventually brought victory in the Pacific.
