wow! It sucks so bad! How about an SD to avoid the use of a PC ? This is just a piece of shit. If you could flash it with a pc away from the jaguar it would be a little less shit but it would still be a piece of shit.
The design of this board is an older one that never came to fruition, but then the creator teamed up with another person and decided that instead of creating a whole new design using the newer technology, they'd just create this one, which already had all the homework & board schematics done for it. It would be an easier build, since they wouldn't have to start from square one.
@veggav Really. Build your own. This isnt for you to run around play ROMS with, this is intended for development. Playing ROMS is just a side effect, not the focus. Build your own SD card.
@A31Chris No, this is build to be able to load roms. I talked with the dev itself and he said "it could have usb stick loading roms but nah it's not worth it". It's like saying a car can't go backwards because the main focus is to go straight ahead.
Now that I have a skunkboard and talked with everybody on jaguar sector I understand, people just don't care enough for this board to have roms loading from usb stick, that's it.
@A31Chris in the end it's just an excuse for laziness. The same laziness that didn't add a save eprom. You are going to say devs are not going to develop games with save features? ;)
Don't worship a piece of shit like that skunkboard and don't give me that small crap talk like "it's not made for it", if you can easily add more to your project and just don't do it for laziness you are just being stupid.
Great video! I've heared that a Skunk Board rev 3 has been designed, and was up for pre order. i managed to miss the pre order tho :( and i think they are having problems with a chip being discontinued. Your lucky you have on of these!!
Why don't they put SD or CF slots on the Cart for greater capacity? Personally I would like to see a new Jag developed with the hardware clocked at 3.2 Ghz, and with a built in DVD. Then play AVP in HD. :-) It would be a great $50 console.
@gamewizard Because my version would all be on one chip and contain about 2 million transistors. A 360 and PS3 contains over 500 million transistors, Hard Drives, Ram and other stuff which quickly add to the cost.
@hcubeentertainment They're unfortunately out of production at the moment, but you can register up at Jaguar Sector 2 as there are people that sell theirs every once in a while. I believe there is someone in the marketplace right now that wants to sell his.
Alright Vi, my dev system is all setup again and ready to go. i'm going to use my skunkboard for the first time tomorrow.
I lost my USB extender cable for my dev system. Good thing I got it at the dollar store :D . Tomorrow I'll get another one and a USB to Mini USB cable.
This looks straight forwrd. I'll peruse the docs tonight make sure I am not overlooking anything.
The Skunkboard is more or less a homebrewing tool... Before the Skunkboard arrived you'd have to either physically mod your Jag with a chip or obtain an actuall Atari dev kit that's hard to find using old obsolete DOS programs. The Skunk is a great dev tool.
Unfortunately, it does not have that chip on the board, so any old commercial games that may be loaded on it won't be able to save.
However, I thought I heard someone say a game could be coded to use some of the space for save-games... I'd have to double-check on that.
It only has to be hooked up to the PC to transfer the game binary. After that, it can be disconnected until you transfer something else. The current binary will also remain in memory when the power is turned off.
It is a review of the hardware, not the software you can load on it.
If you want to see the software, I have TONS of videos here of games that I have loaded on the skunkboard. Just go to my channel and pretty much any "beta," "alpha" or "protoype" listed has been loaded on the skunkboard, which is how I play and record them.
its more like an instruction video you dont actually review what the product can do until after the videos is half over (is the ghetto jag an actual kind of available jaguar or did you just trick out a normal one
Nice! Thanks for doing this video! I should note that Belboz got JCP going on Mac OSX, too... I'll be including his patches in the next release sometime soon. :)
HAHA @ the Ghetto Jag, that's totally awesome and was unexpected. :D Also your huge case for the Skunkboard with the board laying in there reminds me of a James Bond movie, like it's a chip that controls a nuclear device or something. Heh.
Great job on the review though. This thing looks like a really cool piece for the Jag.

@veggav SD is possible.

Go ahead and build an SD adapter, if you'd like.

Yeah, right. All that for $50. What makes you think that would be any less costly to produce than an XBox 360 or PS3?

is the board supported via win 7 and or Vista 64bit?
paulspydar 2 years ago
Nope, 64 bit is a no go, because libusb (the open source usb driver) has not been updated by its creators to support it.
Vista & Win 7 32 bit work fine.

They were around $80, but they sold out pretty quickly.
If there is enough interest, there COULD be another run in the future.
You may want to sign up at jaguarsector[dot]com to keep updated.

The ability to load & play homebrew without the expensive manufacturing costs of cartridges.
viMasterJag 2 years ago
Oh ok, so Jag is now kinda an Open Source console
with skunk anywayz?
So you can actually still buy Jaguars to modify or do u have to try and find an old one?
ScratchGuy 2 years ago
With the skunkboard, you don't have to modify anything in the Jaguar.
The Jaguar actually is open source, though. The rights were acquired from Hasbro after they bought out Atari, so anyone can make a game for it freely.
Only console to officially be open source.

A couple of questions if I may, viMasterJag:
Does the Skunkboard support the EEPROM/E2PROM saves that Jag games create?
Do you need to keep it plugged into your PC all the time or just while flashing? (I'm thinking it's kinda like an Alpine, but updated)
