  • How I loved the dc10 it was my favorite flight to work

  • This and the 1990 beach ad brings back good memories

  • Note scariest plane at 0:09 because the amounts of deaths the dc-10 made

  • @andow21 Designed to Crash!

  • AA and UA are awful when compared to Asian airlines and, even, BA.

  • AA and UA were pretty good before 9/11 now SWA and Jetblue are taking over the industry

  • Why get rid of the 747.

  • This commercial is in the movie Ghostbusters 2. Peter visits Dana in the art museum and this commercial plays on the security guards little TV. Look close, you'll see..

  • no top comment?

  • The sneaky thing about this is that if you'll look back at who was left out of that "9 largest airlines"...the 10th largest airline at the time was Southwest...AA's nemesis gadfly of an airline at the time who was (and still IS) ontime, more times, more days every day than AA ever hoped to be.

  • Yuck worst airline to have to fly on!!

  • well.. if AA was the "on time manchine" back in the day, why cant it still be that today??

  • Thank You American Airlines

  • Thank you

  • Didn't American Airlines retire their 747s in 1984,they were swapped with Pan Am for their ex-National DC-10s. However I think American had a few 747-SPs for their DFW-TYO route for a short while in 1988.

  • That 1st DC-10 landing is forever burned into my memory from the commercials and several movies.

  • Shit airline!

    One of the worst

  • and you screw your economy pasengers on a 5 hour flight whith no meal no pillows and no tv on british airways on a 4 hour flight I get a pillow, a meal and a tv thumbs up if you think I used the word and to many times

  • One or two of them are carrying the space shuttle and others were sold sold to UPS.

  • They are NOT the on time machine. I took a trip to OAK and they delayed our flight for 3 hours!!

  • I'm taking AA from SFO to O'Hare. The available flights on all the other airlines I looked at ranged from about 200 to 800. However, this flight I'm taking only cost me $99 :D

  • i thank AA is the worlds worst airline....i thank they should go out of business...NOW...

  • @usivio980 well keep thinking buddy

  • @tolaviator ok i will take what i said about AA back...but let me just say this..... the last two rows of seating on an american airlines MD-80 jetliner is the most horrific place to ever be seated ....they should give those seats away for free....

  • @usivio980 my friend I could not agree more, those are probably the worst seats on any airline's MD80! Noisy and no view out the window!!

  • @usivio980 Its not AA's fault, its the plane. Douglas company was shit except for their DC-3s 4s 5s and 6s. The rest is shit. No wonder they had to merge with Boeing... AA is also a shitty airline i agree with you.

  • @TheWarPlanet yes u are quite right..... about some models of the MD aircraft...the DC-10 was rated as one of the worlds most dangerous aircraft to fly on.... the MD-80 while not a bad aircraft...if only flown with about 125 persons on board....but a fully loaded MD-80 is a hot, stuffy and horrible plane to be on.... and American airlines i feel is a joke of an airline.... the single Dallas Fort/ Worth hub is a joke...they should have at least two more hubs a eastern hub and a western hub...

  • @usivio980 Do you know nothing about American Airlines? A single hub? Really? I think you'd better research a little more about the airline because they have a good number of hubs including MIA, JFK, LAX, and ORD. As far as the Douglas planes being junk if that is the case then why are so many still in service today including the DC10 which is now mostly a freighter.

  • @tolaviator well the hubs that u speak of are international gateways to the world....i live on the west coast..and i have flown to the east coast quite a few times on American Airlines and always i have had to change aircraft in Dallas/Ft worth.... there are no nonstop flights from east to west.. sorry....everyone goes to Dallas first..

  • @usivio980 You're kidding me right? I guess those 10 or so LAX-JFK, 2 SAN-JFK, 4 LAX-BOS, 6 SFO-JFK, 3 LAX-IAD flights dont really count as West Coast to East Coast?

  • @tolaviator OK u are right, i have only flown out of ONT, so everything from there always goes to the Fort?Worth hub...... now go cash in your AA stock and make yourself a rich man....LOL

  • @usivio980 why?

  • @usivio980 The worst airline, in the US at least, is US Airways. That airline should be flushed down the toilet pronto.

  • @simongbb7 US Airways isn't great, but you've gotta give the pilot of 1549 some credit.

  • It's a pity they don't have 747s anymore. They're probably too big for them nowadays, especially with the fuel prices! Ugh! But back in 1986, my parents flew on a 747. This was before I was even born. So besides Flight 191, here's another piece of luck my parents had.

  • They flew 747s. Who knew!?

  • I'm pretty sure AA replaced their 747s with the MD-11s around 1992. Then in 2001 they replace the MD-11's with the 777.

  • when you prees the vid,the plane at 00:2 looks torn up

  • @demeandr121 its not torn up its just little antennas and draggers and skids

  • 0:12 I really miss the 747s why don't they use those anymore

  • The colors are classic, i hope they stay like this forever

  • I LOVE THE CLASSIC 747

  • does their logo and design ever change?

  • @jmass67 doubt it

  • @ghettoperson257 ur right.... i dont even remember writing that... why did i write that?

  • They land 2000 times a day eh,...Not on 9/11/01 they had 1998 planes landing....R.I.P to all who died.

  • @nigahigafreak1 2000 times doesnt mean 2000 planes because a plane can make 5 flighst a day and AA only haves like 600 planes and its the airline with more planes. and R.I.P to al the INOCENT people who died that dark day.

  • AMERICAN AIRLINES: THE DELAYING FLIGHT MACHINE.:))!!!!

  • this airline is stuck in the 80s

  • i dont think they had the 747 too long. they've always been big on the DC-10 for long haul flights... at least back then.

  • No airline is the same anymore.

  • I still think that partially the reason why we have no TWA, America West Airlines and classic American Airlines fleet today is due to the September 11 attacks, I dont know exactly why but I think the 9/11 attacks caused the government to retire lots of 737-200s, 727s and DC-10s..terrorists can really ruin flying.......

  • @Deblano

The real problem with all of those types you've mentioned is age.

Older aircraft require more maintenance and inspection to keep flying, amongst other things.

The 727 and DC-10 had a 3 person cockpit versus 2 on modern designs. That's 1 more person you have to pay.

In addition, those aircraft burn significantly more fuel per passenger than something newer.

9/11 only increased the rate these planes left the fleet. Their time was limited anyway.

  • @hzzlrp10 Oh I see, Thanks for the info :)

  • how did pan am go out of bussiness

  • @johnmunoz18 do you really want to hear that story? i can message it you, its a bit long. and its really good

  • @MetroidPrimefan1 please tell me!

  • @johnmunoz18 Deregulation plus corporate greed.

  • that commercial is from the year i was born

  • Lol i remember this slogan "the on time machine" from the last time i flew with them back in 1988. Great memories when this airline was great. Funny thing is i bet that aircraft i flew (airbus a300) is still flying around today.

  • @bassmanLI AA retired all A300's last year

  • lol "The On-Time Machine"? That's pretty good.

  • American Airlines operated 747-100s and 747SPs! The 747SP remained in fleet until 1994,and the -100...i think it was withdrawn from use in the 70s...

  • american airlines r stupid/

  • well they arnt the ontime machine or doing what they do best anymore but i still love that airline

  • @KYLEAKAFLYBOIK That is because their are less airlines to compete against so the quality of service is at a all time low.

  • American Airlines to Airlies that sucks....

  • I still can't believe I got the highest rated comment

  • I had a good experience with AA, we were about 10 minutes early landing.

  • whatever happened to AA's 747?

  • @watchingavideo74 well it use to be the 747-100 but no airline anymore has those plus they have the 777 and 767 to make flight from the U.S. to Europe

  • did they used to be trans world

  • American bought the bancrupt Trans World

  • @tolaviator: my dad was a TWA pilot; we weren't really bankrupt when AA bought us. Going into bancruptcy was "part of the deal" for AMR to buy us cheaper. Would TWA have survived after 9/11? Likely not. But TWA was not bankrupt THEN.

  • Yes the B747SP did but AA brought 2 of them to start DFW-NRT due to lack of MD-11's available. Later they were used on JFK-LHR/JFK-BRU.

  • wow. a while since i saw an AA 747. =O barely see those anymore. American Airlines is da best airlines to fly with if u take either both long or short flights :]. AMERICAN AIRLINES!!! =D

  • nice tv commercial. My first ever aircraft model was of a PanAm 747, people have told me that PanAm re-changed its name to American Airlines; can anybody clarify this for me...or is it a lie, did PanAm just go.

  • pan am never had anything to do with AA as AA has been around since the 30s, as for pan am, the original ended in 1991 and there were 3 more imitations, all defunct now

  • @JamesB767 Nah, Pan Am were her own airline as American were her own airline.

  • All the big American airline companies are indistinguishable to me. They all fly the same planes and have similar dull interiors. The flight attendants are always polite and seem interchangeable.

  • Well I once sat on an AA plane for 3 hours AFTER we landed. All we were able to do was watch the United planes be ON TIME AND CONNCT TO THEIR TERMINAL. If you want a REALLY REALLY smooth, confortable, flight. Fly jetBlue. They have low fares and an UNBEATEN saftey record. AA is an airline most likely to crash mostly due to poor maitnence. With jetBlue you get live tv and everybody gwts a PERSONAL tv. Free foods and drinks and ALL they have is first class. No coach! FLY jetBlue!

  • What do you work for Jet Blue? Like I said they are a recipe for disaster with no pilot union so they work they pilots long hours. Tired pilots are cause for concern. Also, they have about 20million less flights than the legacy US carriers so of course they have no accidents. As far as safety though all US airlines rank very close. It's the third world countries airlines you have to worry about.

  • Yeah I'm a flight attendant and work on the A320's

  • Wow! Sorry, but this is an AA commercial. Not an JetBlue commercial. No-one beats the russian Aeroflot Il-96-300. Im seriously. Thats the safest airplane aver

  • Buen video

  • I dislike American Airline because those tickets are high prices, you have to pay the snacks or meals on board while flying, and some of flight schedules are not much options to choose. Delta Airline and Continental Airline is much better than American Airline. Just it is my opinion.

  • America is behind compared to the other airlines of the world but AA is certainly the best airline in the US.

  • Why Doesn't American Airlines have 747's anymore?

  • I guess they had to sell them because they needed money.

  • because it wasn't "cost efficient" to them they would fly a route with one of those beasts and they would not fill all the seats so instead they would lose money. so they upgraded to the more efficient Boeing 767 and Boeing 777.

  • it was bot cost efficent for them because there were notenough people to fill all the seats on that plane so and the price of fuel so the got smaller planes

  • Maybe They didn't have enough passengers and it had a huge operating cost. Im not against the 747 or anything

  • Because the 777's replaced them and are much more cost-efficient.

  • not required for national routes. 777s are also more economic for long range routes.

  • All I know is that one of their 747 is now the Shuttle Ferrying Aircraft.

  • @jasleil ????

  • @8k7k6k5k4k cause theri 747s were too old n now the terroist thing ... so AA dont want any large plane

  • @as97ir I think we already know that

  • @as97ir No, their fleet of 747's were getting old, and I here they traded one of them to NASA to carry the space shuttle.

  • @8k7k6k5k4k

They were more of a Douglas or McDonnell Douglas Aircraft company with the largest fleet of MD-80's until Boeing took over McDonnell Douglas

But the 747 was and still is the most successful wide body A/C to date

  • @8k7k6k5k4k because there gay

  • @8k7k6k5k4k

Because, they were 747-100's, they're out of service, but now they have 777's :D

  • @8k7k6k5k4k They sold their 747's to NASA

  • @AMERICANPILOT2 They sold ONE 747 to NASA as a shuttle carrier, and actually Boeing did that not the airline. The rest went to Flying Tigers, United, and PanAm, one even eventually to Virgin Atlantic.

  • @8k7k6k5k4k 747's have proven too costly to operate for too many airlines. We will never see a jet similar to the 747 again. Boeing is replacing planes like that with similar capacity, wide body, twin engine planes

  • @TechForThought 777's

  • @8k7k6k5k4k

they anounced they will only have twin engine aircraft

  • @8k7k6k5k4k I believe they only had the 100 or 100SP (I think that is right) They retired all of them.

  • @8k7k6k5k4k Well the 747-100 is to old to have

  • haha, nice

  • As opposed to sucking good ass?

  • American only ever owned the 747-100. They originally had the upper deck configured as a piano bar. With the oil crisis in the 70's and customer travel decline they converted all their 747's to freighters although i didnt think they still had them.

  • Considering this commercial is from 1988, they don't have any 747's

  • It was a 747SP.. operated DFW-NRT when the route was obtained in 1987. They were leased from TW.

  • @tolaviator AA had 2x 747SPs in the early 90s until the MD-11s came online for DFW-NRT and JFK-LHR/-BRU.

  • IIRC, they had the -100s and a few SPs

  • Actually, they had -100s and SPs, forgot which type idid this, but one survived until 1993 in AA's fleet.

  • @Mickholas They had 747SP's and that's what was in this commercial.

  • @Mickholas

While technically a 747-100 variant, don't forget the American also flew 747SP's for a short while, too.

  • Comment removed

  • @Mickholas They also owned a few 747SP's - which was shown in this commercial.

  • @Mickholas No, they had the -100s and SPs, the SPs I think, lasted until 1993.

  • at americens airlines we do this kick your ass

  • I can't imagine AA liverie on a 747... That was until when landing in Miami in april on a AA 777, flight AA57 from Heathrow, I saw a disused one in the far end of the airport, it looked a state.

  • pretty much every major airline had 747s kind of like today with a lot of airlines having 737s. 737, 727 and the 747 were popular aircrafts that most airlines owned at one time or another... Southwest even owned 727s at one time. Delta Airlines before the NWA merger owned 747s.

  • Wow i did not know AA had 747s!

  • Dear All,

I have some questions about psychology:

    *Why do we love flying?

*Why do we enjoy air travel?

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm!!! :)

  • stop spamm plzz...

  • To: PatuCCaz

Please respect my freedom of speech and my righty to ask other people opinion!!! :(

  • Yeah, especially in the 70s.

  • well they swallowed TWA, so they had 747's

  • this was WELL before the TWA meger in 2001... this commercial was made in the 1980s

  • american airlies is the worlds BEST airline

  • Did you honestly think that was funny?

  • Comment removed

  • lol if only it could stay that way. now american has like 2 hour delays 0.o

  • That would be the voice of Peter Thomas. He also was the "voice" on the U.S. Army commercials circia 1980's. Also narrates the show Forensic Files.

  • hmm that voice is on flight simulator x

  • PERFECT commercial they should do that again, is a go getter.

  • wow, what did happen to their Boeing 747's???

why dont they have anymore 747's?

  • Wow, a 747 at 0:13. We got rid of those a few years ago.

  • do you work at american airlines

  • not yet. But hope fully when i finish school i will.(pilot)

  • well i hope you get to be a pilot maby i will fly on one of the planes that you will fly

  • You horrible person

  • how come they dont any Boeing 747's anymore??

  • They didn't fit in the routes. Most planes would leave with few passengers and that was uneconomical.

  • True, and the 747 that were purchase by airlines that didnt have a high volume of traffic went under. American airlines got rid of them before it was too late. Other airlines that did have a high volume of traffic were lucky.

  • Let us put it this way; before the merge was announced, there were 20000 TWA employess on TWA payroll. Now are less than 2000.

There were 80000 AA employees on the AA payroll, now there are 80000 employees on the company payroll. Get a calculator if you need to do the math and tell me what AA meant by " TWA EMPLOYEES ARE GOING TO BE FAIRLY TREATED.

  • I agree...My dad was one of those 20000 TWAs, and is now NOT one for those 2000....Get my point?

  • wow thats bullshit

  • what?! they had b747s?!?!

  • Its still a great commercial, i mean it remind us of the good old days when they treated customers as people.

Today, corporate american has taken over, not just AA, other airlines as well...

  • YAY! thanks for posting! Yet AA kinda sucks ass now, haha

  • No they don't.

  • "American Airlines - The On Time Machine"

    Yea, ON TIME MY ASS!

  • lol

  • Nope, actully when e left from colombia we were 15 minutes late of departue, but we made are time up DOUBLE.

  • lol on time back in 1988 smart one

  • how long did they have the 747SP for? It couldn't have been too long after 1988! I like the 727s, DC-10s, etc... all different now yet their livery hasn't changed one bit!

  • AA had 747's in the 90's, I got to fly on one when I was about 8 or so... I wish they still had them

  • Was it specifically an -SP version? These were unique in that they had short bodies with HUGE tail fins. Very short, fat, stubby looking. I can't imagine these were in the fleet much past 1991-92, if they made it that long.

  • I think they stayed until 1993 or something, I believe they were used on DFW-NRT and later on JFK-LHR and possibly to BRU.

  • 00:12 theres a american airlines 747!!

  • They used to fly 747SP's

  • And 741 's too

  • when did you flim this?

  • American Airlines, the ontime machine.that was such a long time ago!!!

  • Yeah..good thing they ditched that slogan...many people were upset a bout their flights being cancelled!
