Great tutorial. I was just about to cut and strip my $40 apple mic/earbuds. I didn't know a/v cables came with a four pin jack on one end.
Anyway, I wanted to ask, what is the sample rate on the voice memo? Is it 44K or thereabouts? I read somewhere that it records at a super low rate, something around 8K. If this is true do you know of a hifi voice recording app? i want to do some hi quality field recording with an omnidirectional mic. thanks.
I came up with this solution when I was on the road and didn't have access to my laptop. I wanted to record an interview and had my Apple video kit with me to plug my iphone into the tv at the hotel. The place that the interview was taking place at had a mixing board and I knew that the iPhone headphone jack could act as an audio input using the AV cable. I figured that it would be cool to share this aspect of the iPhone with others.
very useful info, would it work for video too? I mean use the iphone as a videocam and at the same time capture and record the sound coming from the mixer? Please let me know, that would save me a lot of money and time!
This is so helpful for me. Obvious when you think about it... thank you.

There are a lot of great new mics out now that were not available when I posted this. Thanks for the suggestion!

I don't really see the point of this tutorial.
If you're going to use a mixer and a separate MIC, you might as well connect them to a PC, and not the iphone.
This is the opposite of "portable".
