Heath was absolutely amazing as the Joker, but it was a year of 2 amazing performances. Daniel Day Lewis in there will be blood many including myself consider to be one of the best performances in cinema history. Having said that, I wouldn't have wanted to be the person to choose between Heath and Daniel if Heath were still alive. You'd practically be killing yourself trying to decide.
