ohh and btw. as robert fripp once told gavin harrison: "play as many fills as you want, but don't start or stop them at the 1... everyone knows where the 1 is . just start em and stop em wherever you want"(not the exact wordorder etc) those are highly professional musicians pridgen plays with... they don't need the drums as a foundation for the band...they know where the one is and they probably like it when he expreiments a little rather than (just) keeping time
@gofusiesbass09 are you trying to shut me up over youtube? lol thats funny. All I'm saying his timing is not consistent and he's obviously hard to play with because he isnt a good foundation for the band. he has nice chops and hand speed but that doesnt make him a good drummer.
@knawimsayinnnnn hahhHAHAHAHAHAhahahahaha...egg. Voted world's best up and coming drummer, youngest ever Zildjian Endorsee, youngest Drum scholarship recipient to Berklee (15)...grammy award winning all round mother fucker Thomas Pridgen. Anyone who knows anything about drumming, anyone who has half a clue...and even those at 'emperor' level would agree that nobody can play like Thomas. Nobody...he's out there on his own. Your ignorant comment is embarrassing to read, like your some authority.
@DrumBum561 actually hes right in time, perfectly in 6/8, hes just a master of playing over the barline and coming in on 1 whenever he feels is necessary
haha the exact kit that he is playing here is on sale at a drum store near my house. Its not a replica it is this exact kit. He played a clinic that was hosted by this drum store and now the kit is up for sale.
musicians that cant keep there own timing depend heavily on the drummer to do so for them....but that hadicaps yur drummer...he cant venture out because you'll get lost on your instrument..so therefor that musician now wants to blame the drummer....whatever...keep up or go home...especially if the drummer produce the track.....
@rockitmanley I was once in a band where I had to tone my drumming down ALOT just so our sloppy ass lead guitarist could stay on time. It was a metal band too, and I hate listening to boring drumming in a metal band. Luckily it didn't last long.
@Drunkwraith you dont say....my last problem within the band was with the lead guitar as well...but i dont trip....because even in heaven people who has a musical temperment are "very difficult to deal with"....Lucifer use to sing in the chior ...before being kicked out of heaven....bad band members beware....lol
@rockitmanley Thats an interesting reply to say the least, haha. The guitarist was my older brother too lol. He's not sloppy anymore though thankfully, and half of why he was sloppy was because of his really high cutting guitar tone. It does seem like lead guitarists have more trouble with rythm than anyone else though. I guess too many learn lead then struggle with rythm later haha.
@Drunkwraith couldnt have said it better myself....leads learn by hearin themselves first and the band second...but drummers learn to feel and anticipate the music before it happens...thats why sometimes we know where they are going but they have no idea where we maybe going....bless them anyhow...they are needed as well...lol
@rockitmanley Yeah I agree completely. One thing I noticed with my brother is he always tries to write a song out in his head first then play it but I've tried to convince him that the best stuff always comes out when you're not thinking. Its starting to get through his head a little now. Atleast we've each only got 5 years experience under our belts for our main instruments, meaning we've got A LOT to learn still.
@Drunkwraith hey i hear ya man same here. the best way to learn new stuff is to jam with other people and not by yourself. improv music is the best learner and going outside your "musical comfort zone" you seem to pick up things alot faster that you thought were impossible the day before. ive made a hand full of songs with my friend who plays guitar just by jamming and then we both get that spark of musical genious when it all fits perfectly. no better feeling in the world.
@sk8rj514 Yeah the guy I'm trying to start a band with has been playing guitar for like 12 years and the other day after we got done playing he told me "That's the best jam session I've ever had man." I explained to him that we just found a good rythm and kept evolving with it, or in other words we were right in the pocket regardless of how strange it got at times. It was surprising to me as well since he usually does weird rythm's that take a minute to figure out.
@Drunkwraith yea dude just had that yesterday but with a muse-y sounding song. and a heavier metal style song. garage jam sessions cant be beat im my opinion.
not that it really matters, but you've got to be blind if you think those hihats are a customs. and even worse if they look 15'' to you. who cares what zildjian says. they dont keep track of everyone like that. he doesnt play one thing just cuz the website says something.
probably most people commenting here saw them live. i dont remember what he had when i saw them in philly, i didnt really want to get this in depth but, in this particular video you can see the stamps on the hats, they're regular A's.
This was really beautiful drumming. It's a very hard thing to do what Pridgen does without being overwhelming, particularly to such smooth music and yet he pulled it off.
I have to say I am not a fan of Pridgen's drumming. Don't get me wrong, he's amazing, but he is....."too" amazing. I personally like Jon Theodore more than Thomas. In the space Pridgen would throw down a chop buster, Theodore would have put a sweet latin groove.
But i haven't heard the new Mars Volta album, so I guess I shouldn't be talking. lol
I kinda see your point, but i think that the apparent randomness of Pridgen really helps and compliments Mars Volta. For example the drum part for Askepios just screams to me "BRAIN DAMAGE".
Yes...this is at an annual "drummer festival" The crowd is atleast 90% drummers, who come to see the pros do clinics or demonstrate their style (and talents!) of drumming by performing with other musicians.
i.e. They are supposed to be more featured or as you say, "overplay" than they would normally at a real gig.
In my opinion, Thomas is a great drummer, but he is almost "to" great. It maybe my persoanl taste, but he gets alittle bit too techincal. Like its all about him. idk though. just expressing my opinion. no doubt he is amazing though.

he gets a little too far over the edge at some points in my opinion, but i love the way his hats sounds. and soooo nice when the trumpet comes in. i dig it
refreshing to see pridgen's technique having more of an american/german grip approach as opposed to a srict french that I see alot of other "gospel" drummers use (nothing against it.. just nice to see him play this way)
well it aint about the other instrument..its called MODERN DRUM FESTIVAL so the other musicians if they do think that can shut up and not get paid for doing it

Those are at least 17-inchers, if not 18-inchers. I'm using 15-inchers now, and they're nowhere near that big. Just look at the size in proportion to the 14" snare.
Even if it is (sounds more like a cranked 14", plus it matches the first floor tom in size), if you look closely at the hats, you can see the top cymbal is labeled "Rock Crash". They only make those in 16" and 18" sizes, so I'd say these are 18-inchers, going by the deeper pitch.
yes, 1st floor is a 14, but the snare is smaller in the overhead shot at 37sec. Hats are def larger than 16", so you're logic makes sense bout the rock series.
COME ON PEOPLE!!! This dude is serious sh*t, that is some serious drumming right there. BTW the interaction between him and the keyboard player is beautiful!!!
He's got a lot of broken flow and feeling when it comes to music, must have a great understanding of complex beat, timing, and structure, reminds me a lot of Tomas Haake and Morgan Agren.

I like that stack he has. I can see the top is an A custom EFX, but i cant see the bottom china. that sucks.

He's got a lot of broken flow and feeling when it comes to music, must have a great understanding of complex beat, timing, and structure, reminds me a lot of Tomas Haake and Morgan Agren.
