I think it's important to remember that in the story of the 7 plagues, the whole reason the Pharaoh does not let the Israelites go, is that God purposely hardened his heart.

How's that for messed up.

God wants the Israelites freed from slavery, but he purposely intervenes and ensures that the Pharaoh says no, just so he can prove his powers in the form of mass genocide.
