  • She did Motown and Martha and the Vandellas justice! Great version! Maybe because the band was sooooooooooo good! Love he Funk Brothers.

  • what a fantastic documentary!!!! watched it today and learned a lot!

  • Jealous of her. :(

  • Thanks for the video. Joe Messina plays a Fender Telecaster - a great guitarist !

  • When Joan hits the first note at the beginning of the song it brings me an incomparable happiness !!

  • @F3FisGoodforYou got the exact same feeling :) such an awesome performance

  • Ooops, wrong video, I thought this was Justin Beavers Greatest Hits. I noticed something was wrong when the girl could really sing and the song had a good rhythm and beat to it with lots of soul. My mistake

  • today's music is absolute crap!

  • Have both the DVD and CD! This documentary should be shown to every teenager!

  • Joan does a Great!! Timeless music coming alive! Taste it again for the first time! :-)

  • One of the best Music Documentaries ever made.

  • I just love this song, my sister adores Martha and the Vandella's version as she is a huge Motown fan. Great feel- good music and fab to dance to. Great Post.

  • So great. Great to see some of the original musicians.

  • Don't read this cause it actually works. You will get kissed the nearest possible Friday by the love of your life, tomorrow will be the best day of your life, however if you don't post this comment to at least 3 videos you will die within two days. Now you started reading this don't stop. Put on at least five videos in 143 minutes when you're done press F6 and your lover's name will appear in big letters. This is so scary cause it actually works.

  • 60's Motown! Such happy, joyful music! No wonder everybody thinks today's music is crap! It IS crap compared to this! I was lucky enough to have grown up during this time, and I can tell you all this - giants walked the Earth in those days!

  • Pistol Allen grinning from ear to ear at 2:00 is priceless! RIP

  • While I see people arguing between Joan and Linda's version, the original and still the best is the 1963 Martha Reeves & the Vandellas recording. Both remakes are very good, though.

  • Pretty ok version i must say. Ronstadt version of the "yeah yeah ohhhh" was much better than the one sung by Osborne...

  • @19461667

Joe Hunter, the older of the two keyboard players in the documentary, also died since the release of the movie, around '06 or '07.

  • this woman gives me goosebumps!!!

  • @19461667 Pistol had the most amazing shuffle.

  • I heard that the drummer on the right died right after this project. There is a close-up of him at the end where you can tell he is really in the groove and enjoying himself. These are all great players having fun

  • A great song and a great performance. Martha Reeves, Linda Ronstadt and Joan Osborne ... all great. It's a great movie with lots of other great songs too. If you play bass, do yourself a favor and buy the book of the same title, "Standing in the Shadows of Motown," about James Jamerson, the great Motown bass player. It has transcriptions ( though not tabs, just traditional notes ) of many of his most famous bass lines along with two CD's.

  • Joan gives this version 100% effort , you can feel the soul in her voice and therfore she is very worthy singer of one of my favourite Motown tunes .

  • I have seen it ... and bought copies for all my brothers and sisters... they loved it... Motown was in my 8-track player throughout high school and still loving it today, CD of course...

  • Probably one of the best Musical Documentaries EVER made.... If you have never seen it, your missing out!

  • Really great rendition of an old classic by Ms. Osborne. She does Motown classics justice.

  • wow what a song and man she sings it. but for me its that alto sax that makes get up and dance. love it , the MOTOWN sound is the best.

  • Great Music, Great Movie, Great Story,,, American Culture and History, recommend it to anyone who thinks they are a complete Musician!!!!

  • This Movie should actually be shown in every school of the country. It's a part of US history and heritage, and one big part because this music has done more for the cultural expansion of the US than any other things.... and Joan is SO beautiful here...

  • I get chills every time I watch this. It's magical.

  • cool thank you for the post the brother are mu brothers and i am white

  • She's absolutely a great singer!!!!

  • I saw this show in Phila a few years ago.... was incredible,,,, no one was sitting the whole show, we were dancing in the aisles with 2 older ladies from the row in front of us the whole time.

  • Fannnnntastic...!

  • If you don't like Motown, you'e probably wrong.

  • @MrBunnerabb U thnk you are reith

  • The coolest drummer you'll ever see. Joan looks like she was born to front this band and the band looks like they love having her up front.

  • @ShipwreckTownBand The drummer was Richard 'Pistol' Allen. He died less than 6 months after this performance was filmed. Nice to know he still had that groove going on right up until the end.

  • @patbassbyrne Thanks for the post.

  • Great cover by Joan Osborne with the Funk Brothers band of Motown.

  • KICK-ASS baritone sax solo.

  • This knocked me out. After I heard this I had to do it with my band. PS We did it good but this was way better, completely off the charts. She's incredible and the band is out of this world.

  • This woman has got SOUL!

  • The DVD is fantastic and Joan is my favorite part too....just love her voice/style and look.

  • Buy this DVD, you will never regret it! This is one of the very best music documentaries ever and the Motown tributes by the excellent assembly of vocalists, who perform with the Funk Brothers are as good as it gets. The passing of the Motown era is an event which we have never gotten over.

  • @LesbianVampireLover -- actually I bought 6 copies of this DVD to give to my brothers and sister... They all loved it. Motown was very much a part of our lives growing up. We all just loved the music.

  • @ricdell LOL. I was just thinking that I would like to give this DVD away to friends to turn them on to the film!

  • @ricdell And this is why recording companies shouldn't have videos or songs pulled from open sites like this. I can't tell you how many CD's and DVD's I've bought because I liked what I saw or heard on Napster and YouTube.

  • @ricdell ---Please tell me what is the DVD called? Is there a CD of this, too?

  • @giaisbomb - the DVD is Standing in the Shadows of Motown and there is a companion CD. Both are available on Amazon. kind regards, ricdell

  • @ricdell ---Thanks, I found them! Have a good day, too....

  • Perfect!

  • Stage outfit? These are the type of people responsible for the bland and empty music on most radio stations; soul is less important than what people are wearing. Unbelievable...

  • Saw Joan a few years back at the TLA in Philadelphia. Magic.

  • Joan's dimples make up for the wardrobe.

  • One person likes cooler weather.

  • Discovered Joan Osborne today, purely by accident and am totally blown away! what a talent. I've had to watch this at least four times today! Fantastic. Thank you for this.

  • @perrcyofbrid If you think THIS is great, and you haven't watched it yet, watch her singing "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted," from the same movie. BUY THE DVD OF THAT MOVIE! Get my drift?

  • @theoriginalbadbob truthfully the best moment in the movie is when shes at the coffee shop and starts singing " i heard it through the grapevine". thats when i get the chills.

  • @rbnyy You're going to call me a lucky bastard, because I saw her, in person, at the Coach House, in San Juan Capistrano, on the 21st of this month. Just before she sang one particular song, she explained that it would sound somewhat different than how we were used to hearing her sing it, because she didn't have 30 musicians and 15 backup singers behind her, just one guy on keyboards. It was "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted?" It was quasi-orgasmic.

  • @Chartres1000 Stage outfit? To me its all about the music,Heck if this was radio you wouldnt even has this much. Bill M.

  • @Chartres1000 Do you want her to look like Lady Gaga? Joan, or anyone else, for that matter, could dress in sack-cloth and it wouldn't "detract" one whit from their talent, or lack thereof.

  • I love anything Joan does! She is fantastic and has paid tribute to many great songs and done them justice!

  • Sorry

Linda R's version is the best!

  • Listen my children..

  • If only James Jamerson could have been there. Absolutely terrific, just the same.

  • i pity the one person that disliked this vid. MOTOWN FOREVER!!

  • gorgeous way to sing that song

sublime moment de musique et de plaisir......

    Tamla Motown forever

  • Who are these backup singers? They are so Tony-The-Tiger GREAT!

  • Certainly one of the best performance of the DVD... God bless the Funk Brothers.. get Joan Osborne CD "Breakfast in bed", her two Full performances with the Funk Brothers are on this CD... Joan I love you :-)

  • What a voice, better than Than Phil Collins

  • @ResiiBabii Phil Collins is a mere wanabee when it comes to singing anything of any quality. Joan O, Linda Ronstadt sing these songs exactly how they were intended to be. When I hear him sing this song on the radio i have to change channel. Regards

  • Joan plays it halfway between Motown & Linda Ronstadt with The Funk Brothers. Another great song from my past. Yesssss! Go get the movie "Standing in The Shadows"!

  • Joan has a great voice. She sings these Motown songs very, very well. These songs bring out the best in her because her original songs are not optimal for her talents.

  • Gotta say this song kicks ass, Joan's voice is superb (as always) and the backing band are awesome in all respects. For me though,,, the vocals lack the power, verve and rawness of a certain Miss Ronstadt.

  • JOAN

Could it be the devil in me or is this the way love's supposed to be

  • Outstanding, best cover on YouTube.. in my humble opinion.

  • Linda Ronstadt could learn a little about singing from Joan! Martha Reeves no doubt approves! ; ) !

  • the best single video ever recorded. WHAT ENTERTAINMENT!!!! DRALEXANDER

  • I Like This Version Better Then The Orginal

  • I like the short clip at the end with Joe Hunter about how they came from the south to get jobs in the auto factories in Detroit. " The last thing we wanted to do was work in the factories, we really wanted to play music and thats what we ended up doing, the Funk Brothers ended up playing music" No Mr Hunter, The Funk Brothers didn't end up playing music. They made Motown, they ended up making musical history, and we're all richer for it.

  • I saw the documentry this evening for the first time and it truly touched me. many forget that how important that group of such talented music men changed music and made Barry Gordy Jr. MJA

  • Joan's version is better than any but, the original...she was honored to be singing with the Funk Brothers and shows in her enthusiasm.

  • @Hawkeye752 I quite agree. I saw her perform the songs live in Melbourne Australia this year at the "Motown Event". Excellent renditions!

  • ça ressemble au suprime ! j'adore

  • ça ressemble au suprime ! j'adore

  • Long live the FUNK BROTHERS!

  • Linda is OK but Joan O. owns this song.

    Apologies to Martha Reeves

  • Can't say I agree with those who infer that Linda Ronstadt's version of "Heatwave" is superior to Joan's. Linda's is excellent, for sure, but Joan takes no back seat here. Not imho, anyway.

  • Not quite Linda R!

  • Detroit, we invented the middle class, we make the best soda pop, we make the best potato chips, we make the best cars and by the way, we make best music...it ain't bragging if it's true...

  • @paulbranc I'm not from Detroit. Never been there. But, I do like your spirit, Paul!

  • Yeah, but Linda wasn't backed up by the real deal Funk Bros.

  • @qwer123211 What? You don't seem to grasp what gritty means.

  • best of the 60's was Motown and perhaps the most talented girl groups ever! the musicians were just unbelievable - the songwriters are well known and icons - but for any unsung contributors ...thank you ! Your music will live on....for every generation to follow and try to compete!

  • When the film/documentry was release five of The Funk Brothers had already passed away. May they RIP

  • Best performance by Joan, she is great and talent..... great, great...

  • Love that SAX too here baby! All respects too Jane anytime she sings with the Funk Bro's !

  • this is how a singer conveys the emotion and soul of the song's lyrics...she's totally into the lyric and groove. Same thing for "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted". Joan could be a monster if she sang these type of tunes, IMHO.

  • I loved this documentary. I just wish all of the Funk Brothers were alive to see it.

  • For your information some of The Funk Brothers are still alive. However since this film/documentry was made another two passed way last year. These talented men made history I respect Berry for starting Motown Records and his achivement however, he turned his back on them and did not give them the recoognition they well and truly deserved.

  • LOVED her vocals on this and What Becomes of the Broken Hearted. My mum said just look at the way she moves, she's full of soul.

  • This 2:00 song just took me by surprise and I shed a tear, there was so much joy in it. Wow.

  • seems like everyone has the same view as me. wrote her off, saw this, blown away

  • =) lovely

  • I remember hating her music when she first came on to the scene, then she grew on me, and I liked her. I picked up this DVD and I was blown away, just BLOWN AWAY by her powerful and passionate vocals. Her performance was flawless and made me LOVE her and appreciate her so much more.

I am glad that The Funk Brothers had her singing this.

  • I am in the same boat as you brotha,I hated the "what if god"bullshit,I saw this like 2 years ago and fell in love with her.

  • Amen!!

  • Gotta love the look in those old men's faces after all the years and hard knocks. Just lovin' the music. I wish I had that kind of passion.

  • Totally Classy & Sexxy delivery of a klassik!...Woord!

  • I agree. I own the "Standing in the Shadows" documentary and I honestly don't even remember any of the other performances. But both of Joan Osbournes's performances require repeat viewings. Brilliant!

  • FABULOUS!!

  • what a awesome performance by everyone involved!

  • She can sing pop, rock, jazz, soul, blues,i think she can sing even heavy metal she is amazing what a voice!!!

  • I LOVE this song!

  • She is one smokin' vocalist.

  • u got that right..no doubt she got skills

  • ALMOST as good--but material could NEVER be as powerful--as "What Becomes of the Broken-hearted ?" JO is AWESOME--Fire on the Mountain !!

  • The original guys in this band have done more for popular music than anyone else in history. Imagine being able to sit down in your 70s and 80s and knock out grooves like this without even trying. Absolutely sensational - what a band.

  • I saw these guys on tour about 4 years ago at the Detroit Opera House. Most of these guys were actually recording since the early 60's.

  • You lucky dog!!!!

  • @fingers2105 Ameeeeeeeen =)

  • for those interested in "The Funk Brothers" and motown in general...watch the movie "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" It's an excellent movie. (documentary.)

  • i cry every time i watch clips from this movie.

  • Talk about crying, I just watched her sing ,Kiss and say goodbye. Look it up here on U-tube. It's wonderful!

  • It is not just wonderful it is fantastic

  • RIP Richard Pistol Allen....what a great drummer

  • Amen,bro.

  • Joan does this better than Martha Reeves ever could.

  • If it wasnt for Martha Reeves we would Joan would not be singing this song idiot. They are both great singers leave it at that.

  • The point though, if you've seen this movie, is that THIS GROUP was able to make ANY singer sound good. While you have a point, its really these performances that made people like Marthe Reeves famous.

  • I saw the movie. Joan Osbourne sounded better than any of the singers, even Chaka Khan.

  • People need to watch In the Shadows Of Motown DVD. This band has more number 1 hits than Elvis, the Beatles, Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys combined. True legends.

  • better than the original!

  • YES

  • As a huge fan of the original i think she did a fantastic job covering this song.

  • The original is a true classic as was so much of 60's Motown stuff. She and the musicians did a great job covering it but I think they came even closer to doing full justice to "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted".

  • I gotta get this DVD...

  • it's called respecting the musicians who came before you and paying tribute to them. she's written plenty of her own songs, unlike the majority of "singers" you see on mtv or hear on the radio these days.

  • and what crack are you smoking??? IMO she stole the show over the other singers

  • you obviously have never listened to all of her songs. plus, she is amazing.

  • Joan and the Funk Brothers ROCK.

  • Joan, can we do a duet?

  • Gotta love Joan!

  • I'm 22, I'm milion miles from U, but please, B' my wife!

  • This is perfect. I can't stop watching it with a smile on my face. My god, this is as god as it gets. Joan is perfect....and the band with this groove....i'm in heaven.

  • everyone's definitely on top of their game

the first time i saw this on the DVD with my surround.. I was floored

    the music was *the best*

seriously.. everyone should hear/watch this on a fully equipped surround sound system

    it's perfect

  • i agree, the dts track in particular is amazing!

  • no doubt

I swear, every time I see Pistol doing his amazing shuffle with a big smile, I can't help but smile as well

  • kareoke joan

  • Awesome!

  • I love her voice! And I love Funk Brothers

  • She was the first concert I ever whent to with my friends. Some hundred or something concerts later, She always stands out in my mind.

  • Go Joan Osborne. Thanks for posting this vid.
