This guy would have been bodyslammed by today's athletes. He is nowhere near GOAT PF status no matter how many points he averaged in a league full of fat slugs (the 60s).
Bob Pettit is in my opinion one of the most overlooked/under appreciated NBA players of all-time. The guy was probably the greatest player of his era, yet people always think of Bob Cousy and George Mikan.
I think it's totally unfair to try and compare a guy like Pettit to today's players, but you can see the standard he set for his position at the time and he had a great work ethic. He also has the distinction of being a part of the only team to defeat Bill Russell's Celtics in the Finals. I'll address this "King, Dantley and English" comment as well: they didn't win championships. Sorry!...
@heartbreakdrakemusic well, imagine that today would be more athletic, strong, higher vertical leap.....due modern training technic and steroids....today would be like dirk,he had great outside shoot and post game and also was much better rebounder than dirk!it's not accidently that only pettit and wilt won those great celtics team, one of the best officiall teams of all time!do u thik lebron or wade would be the same if played in 60's?NOWAY....

@master82565 Bob Pettit scored big against the best players of his era, and was by far the best power forward. He averaged 26 points and 16 rebounds for his career. His career high was 50 points. He was for a few seasons the NBA's all time scoring leader with 20,880 points. Dino Radja???? LMAO!!!!! Don't compare him to Pettit, or even Petrovic, or even Kukoc.

@master82565 If I'm not mistaken, against Bill Russell and the Celtics in Game 6 of the 1958 Finals, Pettit scored a then playoff record 50 points. If Radja is so good, why was he so inconsistent in the 1990s? I mean, if he was better than Pettit, why couldn't he at LEAST be an All-Star then?

I've never seen any footage of Pettit before watching this video, and I must say that this little sampling of his build, ballhandling, shooting resembles a cross between Kevin Durant and Chris Mullin. Extremely unlikely that he would score as much as KD obviously, but he was a little better rebounder and would have caused matchup problems even in today's nba. It's too bad there isn't more footage of him available.
@birch5757 well actually pettit was much better rebounder than durant and maybe as great scorer to.i think is n't right to compare him with him but mostly with players like dirk.pettit also had great post game, something that durant should get better.
LIke any other era athlete, an era in one thing but to compare era's is another. Pettir was so great in his era and nothing to argue about that but he'd have modified his game and continued to dominate in any other era. Quick and mobil at 6'9", I think the adjustments wouldn've been easy for him. I attended many of his games with the StL Hawks.
One hint at Pettit's possible effectiveness today is his record in All Star Games. He was a four-time All Star MVP, representing the Western Conference against all-time talents like Russell and later Chamberlain. Given his size, shooting ability and relentlessness, he would in all likelihood remain a perennial All Star candidate.
You are whacked. Petit would be a super-duper star in today's watered down NBA with very little Defense. Watching this film shows me at least three lost arts in today's slop ball NBA. The hook shot, good shooting and defense.

Nice to see remembrance of Pettit, one of the greatest of all time - was one of the first pro athletes to promote weight training, at a time when many trainers believed it would make you muscle bound and stiff.. great tribute..
pettit was the precursor 2 karl malone, if u want 2 see what pettit could do type n "1962 nba all-star game highlights", a cat called wiltatKansas has highlights from the 1st half, 3rd & 4th qtr, pettit didn't care who was guarding him, he faced-up russell & chamberlain on consecutive plays, he was the 1st superstar big 4ward
Good video. Back when Bob Pettit played the game was basketball not the knock your defender down take five steps to the basket and dunk the ball we see today. Most of todays players would have fouled out in the first quarter if they played their game back then.
One of the most underrated players of all time, just becasue he played the 50's and early 60's. Very skilled, great touch and amazing rebounder, he was the only who won a championship to that Celtics' dynasty along with Wilt Chamberlain. What more can you ask for?
the greatest power forward of all time is bob petit.....he was also a track performer in school, had every shot in the back, unlimited range, incredible jump shot and his off the backboard jumper from the side was much deadlier than tim duncan, great hoot shot with either hand, but check his defense and rebounding stats, and remember he had to go head to head against russell....wilt......bellamy...thurmond.....
You've got to be kidding me. You're comparing a guy who came off the bench to a multiple-time MVP and scoring champion. Bob Pettit could stroke it from inside, outside, the free-throw line, anywhere. Dino Radja only stroked it in the bathroom while he read a Soviet victoria's secret, as quietly as possible so his teammates didn't hear anything. Dino Radja wouldn't even be allowed to flush the toilet after Bob Pettit destroyed the bathroom.
well said, mcskillz1234. i couldnt have said it better myself. that bitch afceastfan should go suck tom "i hurt my knee and it keeps getting infected post-surgery" brady's tiny, insignifacant, flacid dong. he is obviously easily replaced, just like Dino Radja is.
finally. i knew you would come around. now hopefully we can put all this dino radja bull shit behind us and move on because we both now know that bob pettit is the man
Whoa you guys need to chill. Radja and Pettit should not be compared, but Radja was DAMN good. He was a 20 and 10 guy and the NBA snubbed him for the all star game, so he left and went somewhere where Europeans at that time, hell white basketball players for that matter, were appreciated and that's Europe. If Radja was black he's have made many all star games and been considered a good player. Radja was good, Pettit is a legend this discussion doesn't belong here but dont dis the man.
I don't know who you consider "the man" to be in this conversation radja or pettit I hope you think it's pettit cuz radja only spent 4 seasons in the NBA in the90s, which has the best players in the world As for him being a 20-10 guy an utter falsehood He averaged only 16-8 not quite pettit stats And as for him getting "snubbed from the all star game" there are plenty of 16-8 guys who dont make the allstar game and stay in the league btw, the reason he left is he failed a physical for the 76ers
I'm not saying Radja was better than Pettit. Radja was a 20/10 guy by the all start break and got subbed, that's what I;m saying. He may not have finished with 20/10, but he was doing about that at the all star break but people would rather see tattooed street thugs than people like Radja. I guess the question is, would Pettit have been at Radja's level if he played in the same era?
Because based on what I have seen of Radja (live and on video) and Pettit (on video only) they appear to have remarkably similar size, skills, etc. "games" if you will. I think Radja would average 20-10 in his sleep if he played in the 50's, and I don't think Pettit would have ever had a 26-16 season in the 90's (let alone a career average) -- do you disagree?
Probably not a 26-16 but 20+ n 12. But it was diff times n i understand what u r saying about that. But I still think Pettit would be better than Radja regardless. I seen Radja play as well.
Who the jesus h fuck is "dino radja"? Sounds like a gay porn actor to me. He probably "averages" 20 dudes a day and 10 cumshots. Bob Pettit would ruin his shit in basketball, then go to his house and fuck his mom. Bob Pettit=the shit. Period.
Ok, I just checked wikipedia and learned a bit more about dino radja. You're comparing bob pettit (red blooded american) to some croatian fucknut whose country is the loose pussy of Europe? (as in, it gets repeatedly fucked by each civilization all the time) Christ, Bob Pettit would rip this guy's testicles out and wear his scrotum as a cape.
Instead of wikipedia, just do a search here on youtube for Dino Radja Mix. If you can put aside your anti-Croatian sentiments for a moment and watch that video objectively (imagine it is in black and white if need be), I think you will see my point. I have not thought for a second about Dino Radja for over a decade but that is the player that immediately came to mind when I saw this video for the first time -- simply too random an association for the comparison not to have some validity.
@afceastfan Are you seriously considering Dino Radja to Petit? That's silly. Quit the hero worship and stop disrespecting 50's b-ball b/c they were solid back then. It's a myth that they weren't.
Question for the basketball historians here. No disrespect at all intended here, but how much better is this guy, then, say, Dino Radja in his prime? I know it's hard to compare players from different eras but in terms of size, skills, moves, etc., Radja and Pettit look to me like the exact same player.
Completely serious. Put Radja and Pettit in the same era, and I strongly suspect that their numbers would be nearly identical. I'm not saying that Pettit doesn't deserve enormous credit for being one of the most dominant players of his era -- he does. But if you take Pettit him out of his historical context and compare him to other NBA players on skill alone, I honestly do not see the difference between Pettit and Radja.
Once again I respect ur opinion. But Petit didnt have all the advantages Radja has in this era. Now imagine him with the equipment, etc in todays gm. I know we will never know, but u have to look at that my friend. I think without a doubt, Petit will be better than Radja.
I know this was pointed out 2 years ago, but I still have my share of stuff to say, incase people have the same thing to say as this guy.
He was from a different era. Regardless of the size, build, and game play from these days, he was still able to do all these feats back in those days. And what he did would've been very hard to do back in those days as everyone did the same routine of practice, and work-out. If Pettit played at this era, he would've been great regardless.
@afceastfan: Based on my spreadsheet which compares players of different eras adjusting for their yearly differences from the norm, I have Petit's team winning by about 6 points if both he and Radja went head to head with totally average teammates. And it's mostly because Petit was a better rebounder, and committed less fouls.

God Bob pettit is the fucking shit. I was just playing nba live and bob pettit scored 66 pts with 24 rebounds 13 assts and 8 blk. on superstar. against the 80s allstars on THEIR court. i mean god fucking damn just look at those numbers is anything beyond this mans ability. he should run for president with his cock as VP. in sum bob pettit=the TITS, ass, pussy, and the mom too
When people think of the NBA, they think of Jordan, Malone, Barkley...but they never think of Bob Pettit. Who was a power foward and once beat the Celtics to win an NBA title. He once even scored up to 50 points, averaging 20pts and 10rbs per game.
if bp played today he would probably average 20ppg 10rpg not these monster stats so will chamberlain and russell they will also have decreased ppg and rpg. no offense to anyone im just sayin
No you dumbass, if all 3 of them played today with better equipment and better quality workout, they would be dominating the pussies that play on these courts (players who joined during the 2000's). The fact that they dominated the game with bad quality workout and still had the skills to utilize today's game, then of course they'll be dominating. Man people need to have some common sense.
VeoShock - nice tribute to a great, almost forgotten, ballplayer. Career averages of 26.4ppg and 16.2rpg make him one of the all-time great power forwards (along with Duncan, Malone, Barkley, McHale, Garnett, Hayes).
At 2:38, the Hawks defeat the Celtics (Russell's rookie year). It's the 1957-58 season. For the Hawks, #22 is Slater Martin, and #20 is Easy Ed Macauley. Hawks were only 41-31 that year. It was a 8-team league back then.
Starting at 1:14, the Hawks are playing the Warriors. I'm trying to identify all the players in this clip. At 1:14, there is a Hawk player in the far left of the screen wearing #18. Cannot find a single instance of a player wearing #18 for the Hawks during Pettit's time. At 1:17, there are 4 Warrior uniforms visible. #9 is Frank Radovich, #13 is Wilt, #14 is Tom Meshery, but the guy covering Pettit is #4. Can't find any Warrior roster with a #4 in this era. Guess this is from 61-62 season.

For a big man he can go strong left or right handed, very skilled!
JamesColvent 3 years ago 2
You've got to be kidding me. You're comparing a guy who came off the bench to a multiple-time MVP and scoring champion. Bob Pettit could stroke it from inside, outside, the free-throw line, anywhere. Dino Radja only stroked it in the bathroom while he read a Soviet victoria's secret, as quietly as possible so his teammates didn't hear anything. Dino Radja wouldn't even be allowed to flush the toilet after Bob Pettit destroyed the bathroom.

well said, mcskillz1234. i couldnt have said it better myself. that bitch afceastfan should go suck tom "i hurt my knee and it keeps getting infected post-surgery" brady's tiny, insignifacant, flacid dong. he is obviously easily replaced, just like Dino Radja is.
zdaddy1369 3 years ago
Great analysis. You've convinced me.
afceastfan 3 years ago
finally. i knew you would come around. now hopefully we can put all this dino radja bull shit behind us and move on because we both now know that bob pettit is the man
zdaddy1369 3 years ago
Whoa you guys need to chill. Radja and Pettit should not be compared, but Radja was DAMN good. He was a 20 and 10 guy and the NBA snubbed him for the all star game, so he left and went somewhere where Europeans at that time, hell white basketball players for that matter, were appreciated and that's Europe. If Radja was black he's have made many all star games and been considered a good player. Radja was good, Pettit is a legend this discussion doesn't belong here but dont dis the man.
JamesColvent 3 years ago
I don't know who you consider "the man" to be in this conversation radja or pettit I hope you think it's pettit cuz radja only spent 4 seasons in the NBA in the90s, which has the best players in the world As for him being a 20-10 guy an utter falsehood He averaged only 16-8 not quite pettit stats And as for him getting "snubbed from the all star game" there are plenty of 16-8 guys who dont make the allstar game and stay in the league btw, the reason he left is he failed a physical for the 76ers
zdaddy1369 3 years ago
I'm not saying Radja was better than Pettit. Radja was a 20/10 guy by the all start break and got subbed, that's what I;m saying. He may not have finished with 20/10, but he was doing about that at the all star break but people would rather see tattooed street thugs than people like Radja. I guess the question is, would Pettit have been at Radja's level if he played in the same era?

@MCskillz1234
Hei friend! Nice comment about Radja and Bob Pettit!
Fernandocatan 1 year ago
@MCskillz1234 From what I have heard, Dino would be "reading" a Soviet victor's secret, not victoria's.

Because based on what I have seen of Radja (live and on video) and Pettit (on video only) they appear to have remarkably similar size, skills, etc. "games" if you will. I think Radja would average 20-10 in his sleep if he played in the 50's, and I don't think Pettit would have ever had a 26-16 season in the 90's (let alone a career average) -- do you disagree?
afceastfan 3 years ago
Probably not a 26-16 but 20+ n 12. But it was diff times n i understand what u r saying about that. But I still think Pettit would be better than Radja regardless. I seen Radja play as well.
VeoShock 3 years ago
Who the jesus h fuck is "dino radja"? Sounds like a gay porn actor to me. He probably "averages" 20 dudes a day and 10 cumshots. Bob Pettit would ruin his shit in basketball, then go to his house and fuck his mom. Bob Pettit=the shit. Period.
zdaddy1369 3 years ago
Ok, I just checked wikipedia and learned a bit more about dino radja. You're comparing bob pettit (red blooded american) to some croatian fucknut whose country is the loose pussy of Europe? (as in, it gets repeatedly fucked by each civilization all the time) Christ, Bob Pettit would rip this guy's testicles out and wear his scrotum as a cape.
zdaddy1369 3 years ago
Instead of wikipedia, just do a search here on youtube for Dino Radja Mix. If you can put aside your anti-Croatian sentiments for a moment and watch that video objectively (imagine it is in black and white if need be), I think you will see my point. I have not thought for a second about Dino Radja for over a decade but that is the player that immediately came to mind when I saw this video for the first time -- simply too random an association for the comparison not to have some validity.
afceastfan 3 years ago
you just dont know son. you just dont even fucking know
zdaddy1369 3 years ago
@afceastfan Are you seriously considering Dino Radja to Petit? That's silly. Quit the hero worship and stop disrespecting 50's b-ball b/c they were solid back then. It's a myth that they weren't.
FavreianVengeance 3 months ago
Question for the basketball historians here. No disrespect at all intended here, but how much better is this guy, then, say, Dino Radja in his prime? I know it's hard to compare players from different eras but in terms of size, skills, moves, etc., Radja and Pettit look to me like the exact same player.
afceastfan 3 years ago
U r kidding me right. Seriously, u r kidding right. Pettit over Radja, any day, any generation, any time. No comparision.
VeoShock 3 years ago
Completely serious. Put Radja and Pettit in the same era, and I strongly suspect that their numbers would be nearly identical. I'm not saying that Pettit doesn't deserve enormous credit for being one of the most dominant players of his era -- he does. But if you take Pettit him out of his historical context and compare him to other NBA players on skill alone, I honestly do not see the difference between Pettit and Radja.
afceastfan 3 years ago
Once again I respect ur opinion. But Petit didnt have all the advantages Radja has in this era. Now imagine him with the equipment, etc in todays gm. I know we will never know, but u have to look at that my friend. I think without a doubt, Petit will be better than Radja.
VeoTek 3 years ago
Radja wasn't even considered a top power forward in the 90s so what makes you think he would have been one in Pettit's era?
nbahistorian23 3 years ago
@afceastfan
If Pettit played at this era, he would've been great regardless.
davidkkt34 10 months ago
@afceastfan: Based on my spreadsheet which compares players of different eras adjusting for their yearly differences from the norm, I have Petit's team winning by about 6 points if both he and Radja went head to head with totally average teammates. And it's mostly because Petit was a better rebounder, and committed less fouls.

The greatest power forward ever imo.

He once even scored up to 50 points, averaging 20pts and 10rbs per game.
astrofish0 3 years ago 7
Great details my friend. U know ur stuff. Yea they call Bob - Dutch. That was his nick name. But he was a great player, a champion, A LEGEND.
VeoShock 3 years ago
if bp played today he would probably average 20ppg 10rpg not these monster stats so will chamberlain and russell they will also have decreased ppg and rpg. no offense to anyone im just sayin
geranato 3 years ago
@geranato
No you dumbass, if all 3 of them played today with better equipment and better quality workout, they would be dominating the pussies that play on these courts (players who joined during the 2000's). The fact that they dominated the game with bad quality workout and still had the skills to utilize today's game, then of course they'll be dominating. Man people need to have some common sense.
davidkkt34 10 months ago
VeoShock - nice tribute to a great, almost forgotten, ballplayer. Career averages of 26.4ppg and 16.2rpg make him one of the all-time great power forwards (along with Duncan, Malone, Barkley, McHale, Garnett, Hayes).
ddenuci 3 years ago 2
Thanks bro. Yea, Bob was a beast and a great player. Very talented and very smart. One of the greatest to ever play indeed.
VeoShock 3 years ago
Oops.. correction 1957-58 was Russell's 2nd year in the league. The previous season Russell and the Celtics defeated the Hawks in the finals 4-3.
ddenuci 3 years ago
At 2:38, the Hawks defeat the Celtics (Russell's rookie year). It's the 1957-58 season. For the Hawks, #22 is Slater Martin, and #20 is Easy Ed Macauley. Hawks were only 41-31 that year. It was a 8-team league back then.
ddenuci 3 years ago
