  • Why do all Atheist's feel the need to criticize everyone else's religion? I also noticed you felt the need to criticize the fact that the communities raise money in order to help members of their community and their religion, knowing that they funded a hypocritical jackass's free ride to Israel/Vacation.

  • Personally, I find it disgusting when a person expects a "community" to support them (regardless of their religion, philosophy, social outlo0k, or whatnot). But I don't see Jews as either "commy" sycophants or "greedy capitalists." Not that I'm suggesting that's what you're implying, but that's what Neo-Nazis say about them. As a Christian Zionist, myself, I despise the defeatist philosophy of "self-hating" Jews.

  • Interesting. Different perspective on community that I had growing up in degree, but I suppose not so different in kind.

  • Great video! I thought the Jewish community was more based on the clan/ ethnicity than a religious beliefe. (The shadow of holocost still looming) As for the necessity of setting up a buisniss; In most of Europe Jews were not allowed to own (agricultural) land, so merchendice was the only option.

BTW, I have never heared of Jews saying the world is 6000 yo. even though the Tora said so. How orthodox are they really?

  • fantastic video. :)

  • A silly ceremony or ritual can make the passing of a loved one psychologically easier especially when hundreds of community members show up to give condolences. You are made to feel a part of something bigger than you. And they make you feel that you can always rely on them in your darkest hour whereas atheists sit at home, alone, and wallow in their own despair.

  • most religious funerals I've been to were meaningless fear-mongering speeches by the priest followed by heartfelt remembrances by the people who loved and cared about the deceased. Atheist funerals are about the same minus the hamfisted guilt trips.

or rather: mourning is not the exclusive provenance of the religious. See: any other species of social Mammal.

  • @EloquentiaSerpentis "most religious funerals I've been to were meaningless fear-mongering speeches by the priest followed by heartfelt remembrances by the people who loved and cared about the deceased."

Fair enough. But u missed my point about community support and the feeling of being a part of something bigger. Because atheists aren't a community per se, i disagree with your point about "atheist" or civil funerals which AFAIK do not necessarily attract a constituency.

  • I'm going to be unnecessarily unkind for a moment: Sir, i can see why you'd be confused into erroneously thinking atheists have no community; it is a prerequisite of "membership" that we each think our own thoughts and rarely agree on anything outside of the lack of existence of supernatural things and perhaps core human values and the inevitable erosion they suffer when people believe in invisible authority figures.

  • As a follow up; AFAUK is not very far at all on this particular topic. Since when did funerals gain constituencies? does the amount of people present to mourn the passing of a person really determine how valuable they were? have you been to many non-explicitly religious funerals? more importantly, where does your data supporting the absurd claim come from?(re:"only the religious have community") and do you really want to open up a comparison betwixt the two communities? /trollface disengaged

  • I can vouch for that. My wife (an atheist) is an elementary school teacher. A few years ago, a little girl in her class died suddenly and unexpectedly. At the funeral, the priest gave some canned words about God's plan and some other such bullshit. Cold. Then it was my wife's turn to speak about what this girl meant to her. There wasn't a dry eye in the house. The child's parents were exceedingly grateful. They & others said that was the worthwhile, honest part of the funeral.

  • Religious communities step in & provide important services at major turning points in our lives like birth, marriage, death, etc. In most cases, atheist type people don't know what to do when someone dies. There are no rituals. Most religions on the other hand have experts that come in, console the family, prepare the body for burial, and then mourn in a very structured and organized way.

  • Very interesting video. I must disagree with several points though. First, I believe the modern Jewish experience is unique among religions in that the community support system is all encompassing and total. Islam, for example, attracts the poorest of the poor around the third world without any obvious material benefits. Muslims are nowhere near as organized as Jews yet they have strong adherents. Hence, I don't think that attraction to religion can be explained in purely material terms.

  • Of course the same occurs in other faiths, you have to look no further than the catholic church and why they pass the collection plate around every sunday, it's to strengthen the church and spread their belief system.

This is why the catholic church is against birth control

  • I agree with every point made. When you consider the fact that many churches operates tax-free, this only complicates the issue, because it grants so much more financially than anywhere else.

  • WOW, i never heard of such community help the Jewish people give each other. it's kind of cool some aspects i really liked . but it is a little self serving. staying a jew to reap the benefits. great shit.

love the porno music by the way. lol.

  • In my friends case, i truly believe that he BECAME an orthadox jew so as to reap the benefits...so its truly a two way street...

  • I thought this was a very thoughtful video! ;-)

    You've just gained a subscriber!

  • Thank you good sir! Hopefully I will live up to your expectations...

  • what is it with the YT atheists and the keybaords.. everyone has one..

  • There are a lot of atheist musicians, I guess is what it comes down to. As Im sure you know, if you're gonna do music production, you just gotta have one.

  • Excellent video!

  • Mmmm....I wonder if money the religious gave to the church they instead put towards something like universal health care....

Or maybe into a credit union to help EVERYONE....

  • Okay so obviously I disagree with some of this video... BUT... The music is awesome! I can just hear Barry White bustin out some dirty sweet love lyrics to that one. Smooth!!!

  • Thanks man, its a part of a song my group is working on...we thought it was pretty catchy :)

  • Do not accumulate wealth. (Matthew 6:19) Materialism is not a Christian belief, yet they all try to win the sunday dress-up contest, or purchase the fanciest bible, or automobile, or house, etc. Yes, Christians are hypocrites.

  • I agree completely...and the fact of the matter is, it is unquestionable that when a member of the community opens a business, that they receive the business of the community almost by default...thus encouraging materialism. By christian teaching standards, its extremely hypocritical. It goes directly against Jesus' actual teachings.

  • interesting. We hear all about the christian lifestyle anf faith, its interesting how it compares to others.

  • I always love your insights into Judaism. I'm really not very familiar with it personally, just what' I've read.

  • The jews have all the money? AAAAAAHHHHH!!! :P

    Great video thoughtful atheist.

In Greece the communities there tend to help each other a lot but from what i witnessed they only do it because they want to, not for any return or religious reason.

I do my bit just for the pussy :P

what song was that at the end?

  • I wasn't aware that Jews having all the money was a big secret...kinda common knowledge i thought XD

The song at the end is original...I AM a musician, you know...its time to bring back the porn groove.

  • Very interesting and very well told. Like you, I imagine the other "communities" are similar. It is that age old trade "join our club/religion/fraternity and we will let you trade autonomy for success. There are very few things in my life that I need to credit others for and you know what? I am pretty happy about that.

At the end, I knew exactly why "ours" was better even befor you answered it yourself.

    Super video.

  • Thanks for watching, man. Glad you enjoyed it!

  • Wow... maybe I should give Judaism a try.

  • Well jews do secretly run the entire world, you know...it might be in your best interest to join the club. ;)

  • I deserve a girl friend XD

    oh darn, I'm ugly

  • good vid... spiritual materialism...
