  • Thanks for posting this tune. I've been working it up on my B3, but now I think I'll just sell it.

  • God bless Joey "D" for keeping Charles "The Burner" Earland's spirit alive through his music.

Joey you have a new fan for life. DJ from Chicago, Illinois.

  • this is cookin' smokin' and groovin' thanks for posting

  • That's Joey's dad heckling the band and laughing. I'd recognize that voice anywhere. Another legend, Papa John.

  • Joey D. jamming at Bobby Cs in Phoenix az.one of the top Jazz Clubs in town!

  • Pure JOY. Thks for posting.

  • Lose some weight, Joey.

  • Sic-wit-it

  • Oh yeah...loving this!!!

  • pure joy

  • love this song... wish it was covered a bit more by jazz musicians!

  • I like the spirit of this rendition but "The Burner" Charles Earland is the man.

  • I like the spirit of this rendition but "The Burner" Charles Earland is the man.

  • this version is great as is charles earland's... but grant green's on 'live at club mozambique'...........

  • I've seen Joey and the guys at Steamer's Cafe, Fullerton, CA. Great Stuff! Would do it again. He knows how to make that Hammond B3 sing.

  • we are SO lucky that the shot includes the guitarist's reaction in most of Joey's delicious soling to record his varying looks of wonder, respect, agreement and occasional amazement

I like how Joey sits on the low pedal around 9:20 to bring it home before that wonderful (if abruptly cut off) ending

I didn't think that the small club banter hurt the performance, either

    thanks to the poster

  • Joey actually plays 98% of the bass line w/ left hand, you only use pedal for the odd 2/5 or in ballads, also check out lonnie smith

  • That bas line is done with the foot petals. Little is done on a Hammond b3 with the lefth and.

  • What are you talking about ? He is playing the bass line with his left hand.

  • @PixC914 Joey is playing bass with his left hand. If you can't see that then i'm not sure what to tell you, but he does tap the bass pedals just to give his left hand that extra thump, which is why it sounds so authentic. Great playing joey!

  • a left hand that has a brain of his own... :)

    nice playing! God Bless!

  • cool, daddy-o

  • Why are there so many people talking while these legendary cats are playing? Must be the booze(or the triple lattes) talking.

  • @ zaj 58

Okay but what is wrong with believing that Jazz is the best thing that America ever produced inasmuch as it's the truth?

  • This is a great version. And the organ's kicking it.

    Thanks for posting.

  • Real kool...a couple of tempo stuff...but wow!

Compare this talent to today's' shit music...sorry for the vulgar lang....

    Great job Joey!

One of my fav tunes BTW

  • Nice, but I still like Charles Earland's version better...it just has more groove and soul...sorry Joe, you are a beast anyway-GQ

  • Joey shouldn't play with anyone besides bollenback or martino, it just isn't a fair fight!

  • That is one sexy sounding B3

  • He's really the ONLY good thing about the United States of America.

  • Oh, I'm sure you can find much, much more to be envious about in the USA.

  • I actually meant that Jazz music is the ONLY great thing the U.S. has ever produced & this was only inadvertently because all the White European 'Christians' (ancestors?) enslaved Africans. Art Blakey's 70th Birthday party concert was hosted by the Germans. Keith Jarretts concerts are in Europe. The great Hank Mobley died panhandling outside Village Vanguard. America is fundamentally a dumb cowboy cowgirl punkrock rap culture. Just check out the videos most viewed here a Youtube.

  • Envy is eating you. And many of those "enslaved" neegers were sold by other neegers.

  • The only thing I envy are all the great Jazz musicians. I wish I could do what they did. The great Jazz artiists - Pepper, Stitt, Coltrane, Cannonball, Peterson, Miles, Clifford, Rich, Jarrett, DeJohnette etc etc is what I envy. And they are the only thing t that is 'great' about the U.S. Everything else re the U.S. disgusts me. The U.S. is 'great' only when it is compared to half the world. Jazz is the only thing factually great about the U.S. All else is shameful especially it's founding.

  • @adeduction

please man! stop the BS, were just a couple of people tring to listen to some very hip jazz. Don't want your nasty ranting crap!! take it somewhere were they give a crap a hole. ok?...........

  • @adeduction Don't you mean B-3? ha!!

  • @adeduction y so srs?

  • Dude there is no bass player. Joey is kickin bass w/ left hand and both feet!

  • Pretty good job, but the tempo slows way down when the sax solos ... the drummer has chops, but the time is all over the place ... I would also use a different reed if I was the sax player ... just not bright enough for club settings, but great chops on the horn ... love the bass player, but the organ is overpowering everything here ... maybe it's just the recording or acoustics of this room.

  • Great post thx! The rhythm, melody, and groove of this '68 rock standard so lend themselves to jazz. I'm shocked more jazz artists dont add this chart to their repertoire! Right on Joey D!

  • It's a great chart in its original form. There is a reason why it was the first song on Vol 1 of Rhino's 70s anthology. Joey does a super job of capturing the infectious spirit of the original and infusing it with some real jazz sensibilities. I wonder if Pat Upton has ever heard this arrangement?

  • Could any guitarplayer please make a track with his pc playing along a drummer this song? So we organists can jam to itt?

  • Ah yeah the Mighty Burner. The reason why I started playing the Hammer. Classic stuff

  • Wow, he plays all that far out shit and effin ANCHORS the bass with his left hand the whole time.

    Dope.

  • Joey is fantastic Thanks For the post 20********* And favorited God Bless KTF

  • Oh man, Joey is really amazin'.

This song always reminds me of Charles Earland...

    Great job, as usual!

  • I have been a big Joey fan since I was a kid. (We're about the same age) I'm coming out there to Phoenix as soon as I can. See one of my idols.

  • Papa John is one of the nicest guys ever. Period. And sometimes--some of the best music is made when a bunch of guys just get together and have fun. Sure, it doesn't hurt to have people like Joey playing--but the nice thing here is there's no pressure; just have a great time!

  • You're right about Papa John - nice guy, good family man! Seeing Joey occasionally at Bobby C's with Papa John is such a treat! Papa John described Joey's playing better than I can. He said "Joey's 'the wizard' with the little pointy hat and everything." Then he let go with one of his contagious laughs. Great family - the DeFrancescos.
