What the hell difference does it make to you where he gets his health care? He paid for it Himself and He chose to go there, he could have gotten it in Canada but chose to get it in the states. No reason but his own, its a none story, I see you Debt is going up, your involved In two wars, record unemployment I suggest you focus more on the problems in your own country then about one Canadian going to the US for Health Care for Political Reasons
"I wanted to get in, get out fast, get back to work in a short period of time," the premier said. "this is not a unique phenomenon to me. This is something that happens with lots of families throughout this country, so I make no apologies for that."
Just because one person goes to the states for treatment doesnt mean our health care isnt good. He prefers private insurance rather than universal health care, it was more of a political statement than choosing where to get his surgery.
@Vets4Victory1 I dont know why he went to the states Im not his secretary. Why dont you ask him youself. Why the hell do you think im a liberal? Surgeons in Canada were shocked he went to the states it was all over the news because he could have gotten the surgery in Canada but chose to go to the states, but you people frame it the way you want to cast a negative light on Canadas health care.
First off Vets, he's the Premier of Newfoundland, one of the smallest provinces, not Canada. Newfoundland has a populaton of 500,000 and does not have every high tech surgery available there. He could have had the procedure done in many other center across the country, by surgeons who pioneered the procedure, but chose to go to Florida where he owns a condo. Nice place to recover for 12 weeks in February & March. Its a non-story.
Canadians live longer than americans and we have access to the same crappy american food chains and restaurants which means lots of canadians are fat and obese just like the americans so we must be doing something right in Canada as life expectancy statistics do not lie, the only difference is canadians do not go bankrupt or homeless because of unpaid medical bills like people do in the usa and the fact that we live longer is because ALL canadians have access to free universal healthcare.

On topic: this woman is a liar. She didn't have any form of cancer or tumor. A cyst (I have one) is not life threatening. I had the choice to remove the one found in my breast with a syringe or wait till it went away by itself. I chose to wait a couple months to see what transpired. It went away. I could have gotten it removed within two weeks. I live in Toronto.
She gets paid to spew lies. She has no conscience. Reality is that someone with less money than her couldn't afford surgery in the US
She is free to express her opinion as is anyone however did NOT have a brain tumor - she had a Rathke's cleft cyst. A cyst is a fluid filled epithelial-line sac - people get cysts all the time and they don't march off to the Mayo clinic as if it were a five alarm fire. Rathke's cysts are completely benign and if she waited she would have been fine. It is extremely slow growing. She will get her butt kicked in court. It is a shame she is being used as a pawn since she is obviously not very bright
Government has never been able to provide for people like people can. Medicare/medicaid is a disaster, Social Security is bankrupt, even the postal service is billions in debt, so now we figure we should hand over healthcare entirely. Surely they can run that efficiently, right? Well, I suppose it will work as well as printing our way out of a recession. (which history has proven never works... Germany, the Great Depression, etc.) Next stop, Socialism Whoo hooo!
I will not let you or you ilk to take me back to USSR. I will not let you make USA into USSR. Ive had enough of government tirany. And socialism, my confused friend, is every1 equally poor NOT equally rich, dont be fooled.

Oh Dear. You are very stupid. Keep handing your moeny over to the rich if you want. Im sure your insurance will be spent on a nice car for a fat shareholder.

LONG LIVE SOCIALISM IN THE UK. We are celebrating 60 years of socialism that we have enjoyed a lot.
krazykeys88 Actually calling UK socialist country makes you rather incredibly dumb, you country is a hybrid. And do tell why UK has private insurance now? Why is the market even open to private insurance if you public plan is just so darn great. And how is it different if you give your money to the government who do nothing but take your money and spend it elsewhere, not even on healthcare, and your healthcare system is in shambles.
Hey Mr. Blunt, this is a lie. She had a benign cyst.
What about the thousands of Americans that fly down the border to Mexico to get more affordable health care?!? I don't hear the Mexicans, Hondurans, Costa Ricans, and other claiming that the US health care system sucks.
Mr. Blunt, I support a public plan option, and so should you.
2 years agi Drs found a growth on my spleen. Tests could not determine if it was benign or malignant. Drs. followed me closely & when tests showed it growing, the award-winning surgeon removed it and found a very rare non-malignant tumour. If it had grown & burst I could have died. Benign or not I needed an operation I couldn't have paid for if I lived in the US. Our system may need improvement - but it exists! And so do I!
The fact that the Canadian system is not driven by the greed of corporations, insurance companies and executives is enough to declare it superior. Canadians are proud of their health care system and would not trade for a corporate system, the short comings of a profit driven system far out weight the benefits.
Every country that finishes ahead of the U.S. in quality of life surveys has government run health care.
Shona Holmes along with her husband have two YouTube Channels homiemagnum shonaholmes3 where copies were placed for the Canadian Constitution Foundation of a video from 2007 and an interview on Global get the whole story people this lady has been at this for some time. Don't be hoodwinked!!! She is one puppet that wants to keep on talking as long as she can get the attention for cash!
What a lying turd. Not allowed to go to another doctor in Canada? I switched primary care doctors this week, and opthalmologists this winter, by my choice. My mother and sister have been treated for cancer over the last year by multiple oncologists and other specialist MDs, hospitals, diagnostic clinics - completely, promptly and successfully. I took my partner to the nearest ER (and then ICU) twice this past spring in near-fatal diabetic crises. Costs to us? Parking and cabfare.
Honest discourse is welcomed in free societies and I respect the pressing issues regarding health care for our Southern neighbours. Honest discourse being the operative phrase. But when discourse slides into distorted antiCanadianism it is no longer anything but that - virulent antiCanadianism. Bilateral MissouriCanada trade is over 8 billion dollars a year. This isn't a necessity for Canada, it is a convenience. Measure your rhetoric with integrity, Mr. Blunt.
Thank you for your careful comment and for your concern, TwoStepBilly.
I hope - given how knowledgeable you appear about Missouri and the rest - that you are a constituent of this individual and will do your utmost to ... ;)
Neighbours, friends and family characterizes US-Canada relations on the human level. We don't need politicians and profiteers fouling our mutual nest with lies and insults.
This isn't the first campaign of rabid antiCanadianism the Faux news cell has waged. One of their propagandist "segments" appropriately titled the "Red Eye" mocked and jeered the Canadian troops, as these very young men and women streamed home in coffins after defending Americans after an attack on America soil. Talk about emboldening the enemy. The Taliban were no doubt laughing along with the belittling of Canadian war dead. Faux news' chatter must now be considered enemy propaganda.
Representative Roy Blunt, you're a propaganda repeating retard. There ARE longer wait times in Canada but this woman had a simple cyst. Which cost her 100k to have drained in the US it would've been FREE in Canada. Now she has to lie for the US health industry lobby to pay for it, and you put it on your YouTube channel. You fucking mug.
LOL! It's hilarious how this lady's benign cyst suddenly turns into deadly cancer when she's paid enough money to be a right-wing spokeswoman! Google "Shona Holmes cyst" for more information. Basically, that cyst would not have killed her in six YEARS, much less six WEEKS (the actual wait for treatment).
This is bollocks. It 's absolutely ridiculous . . . think about all the people that the Canadian health system has saved from death and suffering, instead of focusing on one person's story, which leaves out a lot of details.
I'm really upset that our American friends are being lied to like this. Our system in Canada isn't perfect but it works and people are NOT dying because of sub-par care. Many people come to Canada from other countries for surgeries that aren't available in their own countries. The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto is one hospital renowned for this.
This ad is an absolute sham and Shona is lying. I disown Shona as a Canadian & I apologize to our American friends for Shona's existence.
Turns out, that Shona and/or a family member has noted my posts as spam.......apparently the facts are ........ embarrassing. Shona, how long did you think it would take for the truth to reveal itself. Tsk Tsk Tsk
THINK..... who stands to benefit ..... the insurance companies stand to lose hundreds of BILLIONS of dollars in premiums. The profits they generate buy votes, and guarantees, follow the money, DO the math! the savings would be from the 30 plus% built into our premiums. The wasted bureaucracy and RATIONED care provided by our insurers that represent and cater to WALL STREET.... what on earth would ever lead you to believe that capitalism and health care belong together? Just Think About It.
Read posts below ..... open show all ....... truth is reported as spam ..... use your brains..... think for yourselves...... shona was made into a pawn. and now she is embarrassed at how deep she is in. There was no cancer, no tumor, just a cyst..
Shona Holmes is a fucking liar. Canada has a great healthcare system and she is no doubt being paid by the US insurance companies to lie on national TV.
Ignorance! It was a fluid filled RCC cyst, mainly benign & not life threatening. She didn't LISTEN to her doctor & fled to the Mayo clinic where they treated via a simple surgery, cyst was drained via her nose & sinus cavity. She survived. They published. People don't die from this. The cyst was drained, her symptoms disappeared, including vision problems & headaches & were not life threatening. Now she has $100,000 in UNNECCESARY debt & is looking for a handout. There is no cure for idiocy
This woman is misleading not openly lying!! We can see any doctors we want in Canada. My friend had a brain tumor. she had her doctor's HOME number for comfort and had her tumor removed within 1 week!!
This woman is a puppet of U.S. conservatives and is betraying the TRUTH about Canada's health care system.
I would really like to meet this woman. She is an idiot and doing a diservice to her countrymen and the americans watching her lie.
The fact is our system is not perfect however more people die every year in the US from the same problem of not being able to see a doctor. That being said every first world country with the exception of the US and S Africa have a national health program. Also, i would rather have the govt run healthcare as big business would rather make money than heal people.
TorontoCanuck, She is lying. There was a spot on CTV about her. She never had a cancerous brain tumour, she had a cyst or something and didn't even listen to her doctor's advice. She is a pawn of the American conservatives and she is slapping Canadians in the face with her lies. We have a very god system and no one has to wait for serious surgery. I have never even heard of it.
I live with a serious illness and I fully agree with this womans statements. It can take months to get a second opinion in Canada (depending on where a person lives), and it can be next to impossible to receive one. A Toronto specialist told me that he had patients waiting up to six months to see him, therefore, he was unable to follow me, because, I was an out of province patient. Ontario patients were waiting, too long, as far as he was concerned.
I have waited nine months and up to a year to see a respiratory specialist (respirologist), only to receive the medical run-around. This is despite having an advanced lung disease (started in childhood), being on O2 24/7, and requiting frequent IV antibiotics to treat serious lung infections. It's not that easy. With a brain tumour, she would not have months to wait, and would not necessarily be bumped up the list.
Health care is a personal choice. What arrogance must be held to oppress me and take the choice away? Nobody has the right to dictate my healthcare choices and enslave me into paying for health care for others. To support socialized medicine run by corrupt government is support for oppression. I dont want to further my indentured servitude to the Roman Empire ooops I mean the US fed. govt. Please stop oppressing me! What will happen to health care next time we have a George Bush? Think ahead!
As someone who has nearly 3/4 of his family in Canada, every single one of them will tell you exactly the same thing. Universal Healthcare is probably the worst answer possible to the question of improving our own system. How on earth anyone could think taxes and the federal govt could care for our sick and injured better than doctors working in a competitive field is beyond reason or logic.
foxfire429: "How on earth anyone could think taxes and the federal govt could care for our sick and injured better than doctors working in a competitive field is beyond reason or logic."
It certainly is! Who are these fools??
Here in Canada, we wouldn't stand for it. We choose our doctors. Our doctors decide what treatment we need. They provide it. They bill the public insurer. The insurer pays.
I don't want "competition" when I'm sick. I want healthcare. My taxes pay for it, and I get it!
And lets hope that doctor gets it right from the start because getting a second opinion would be an outrageous and costly idea.
Unfortunately for you there isn't a whole lot you could say to sway me in the slightest. My mother's side of the family are all Canadian and many of them have health issues in the latter half of their lives and I know how slow the Canadian system is. But, keep on spreading the news, while your doing that, other Canadians or coming here for better care.
There are far more of your fellow Americans dying every day, because they won't risk paying medical fees, which they can't afford. I am a Canadian, and this one isolated case is being used as propaganda, I have never heard of one person in Canada dying because the treatment wasn't available, the truth of the story is, is that her own doctor didn't find it her condition life threatening. Shona Holmes is now one of the most despised Canadians in the world, Google it, because Canadians dont agree
firefox429: "Cancer survivor rates in the US are far better than both Britain and Canada"
I prefer my data to be less than a decade old. Your "stats" are for diagnoses 1990-1994. Like, for the UK, before it embarked on huge campaigns to have people attend for testing for colorectal, breast and cervical cancer. People in the UK, despite free healthcare, had historically been reluctant to bother doctors about such things.
Now, how about those racial disparities in US cancer survival rates?
foxfire429: "And lets hope that doctor gets it right from the start because getting a second opinion would be an outrageous and costly idea." In your opinion?
Not in my opthalmologist's. He didn't think much could be done about my eye problem. But he referred me to a retinal surgeon. Surgery is next month.
Had he not, I'd have got my primary health care provider or optometrist to refer me to a different opthalmologist ... as I had in fact just done ...
1) Inventing the best treatment or cure for a particular illness
2) New medications which treat illnesses
3)Less waiting time (I one hospital cant see you atm, you are referred to another hospital for faster treatment)
I guess you dont like that competition? And I do know what Im talking about Im from USSR, now live in USA . USSR takes emergency 40 minutes to arrive. Yes we all want that.
I wish Faux news would take their cameras and microphones into Canada and interview random people. Oh wait, we can't have that. We might run across some UHC supporters. That would be bad for ratings. THINK..... who stands to benefit ..... the insurance companies stand to lose hundreds of BILLIONS of dollars in premiums.

There is no cure for idiocy

correction: IS openly lying~!!!
SkyLightDancer 2 years ago 5
This woman is misleading not openly lying!! We can see any doctors we want in Canada. My friend had a brain tumor. she had her doctor's HOME number for comfort and had her tumor removed within 1 week!!
This woman is a puppet of U.S. conservatives and is betraying the TRUTH about Canada's health care system.
Did she have a tumour or a pimple??
SkyLightDancer 2 years ago 4

How are we supposed to believe this woman when she lies outright?
Seeing another doctor for another opinion is "just something we're not allowed to do", blatant lie.

With a brain tumour, she would not have months to wait, and would not necessarily be bumped up the list.

zigs, You are right! This woman is lying and the right in the U.S. is falling for it as hoped. I wonder how much she was paid!!!

More than 10 years ago, I was in New Brunswick & saw commercials stating that just that province spends Billions per month on state-run health care.

But, keep on spreading the news, while your doing that, other Canadians or coming here for better care.
foxfire429 2 years ago
There are far more of your fellow Americans dying every day, because they won't risk paying medical fees, which they can't afford. I am a Canadian, and this one isolated case is being used as propaganda, I have never heard of one person in Canada dying because the treatment wasn't available, the truth of the story is, is that her own doctor didn't find it her condition life threatening. Shona Holmes is now one of the most despised Canadians in the world, Google it, because Canadians dont agree
jasonholliss 2 years ago
Its not just this one case, its a statistical fact. Cancer survivor rates in the US are far better than both Britain and Canada. Google it.

firefox429: "Cancer survivor rates in the US are far better than both Britain and Canada"

Who cares about swaying you??

Competition in Medical profession entails
1) Inventing the best treatment or cure for a particular illness
2) New medications which treat illnesses
3)Less waiting time (I one hospital cant see you atm, you are referred to another hospital for faster treatment)
I guess you dont like that competition? And I do know what Im talking about Im from USSR, now live in USA . USSR takes emergency 40 minutes to arrive. Yes we all want that.
samuils 2 years ago
samuils, you make no sense:
Competition in Medical profession
1) Inventing the best treatment
- discussion was about *getting* treatment, not inventing it
2) New medications
- the doctor you go to, to *get* treatment, doesn't invent medications
3) Less waiting time [referral to another hosp]
- what does this have to do with competition?
The idiot I replied to claimed that govt would provide service, not doctors. No one is proposing that in the US, it does not happen in Canada.
iverglas 2 years ago
WRONG:
1) Inventing the medicine WHEN ITS PROFITABLE (In the UK we research regardless)
2) We also have new medications (more than in the US) but they are ALL Free WITHOUT EXCEPTION.
3) WRONG average NHS waitinglists are half those in the US.

1) Your pharma is private companies
2)Nothing s free you dummy, you pay with your taxes
3) We dont have waiting lists here, unless to make an appointment a few days later a waiting list.
