  • ソウル・ジャズのウキウキチューン、マグダニエル作”ComparedToWhat"~レス・マッキャンの魂のあるヴォーカルがすごむ、エディ・ハリスも小粋ブロウ!! #jazzm

  • damn that's Eddie on Sax, as soon as he plays it's like BOOM/ Ed in the house.

  • GODDAMMIT

  • Love everything about this song, except you cut off the intro. Shame on you.

Eddie Harris is the Man. His "Second Movement" with McCann is awesome as well.

  • All of these guys were fantastic... but Benny Bailey tears it up in this one... he never played better trumpet than his solo at Montreaux...

  • Heard the GODDAMNIT in the movie "Casino" from 1995. Now, at long last, i've found the song!

  • 1 of realist tracks ive ever heard "GODDAMMIT"

  • Leave it to the legendary Martin Scorsese to open a scene with "GODDAMMIT!" from this song, on the soundtrack!

  • Well all I know is , this is Music and DAMN GOOD MUSIC and brings back good good memories shared with Dad & Mom on a Summer night god rest there souls pop's used to dance me to sleep as a baby to Les Mc Cain ,Eddie Harris,Tommy Dorsey . Good Music I want a glass of Cold Duck right now.

  • @tamzER43 thxs, instant memories, afro sky high, firt tight and held high, proud of my black self, then came the herion.

  • Wonder if Obama has heard this number???

  • eugene mcdaniels, was he pro life or choice, never understood, what he meant or if he meant to be kinda oxymoronic

  • RIP Eugene McDaniels.

  • "We always end up in a rut" - should replace "Pluribus Unum" as the U.S. motto.

  • Goddam where is my sax!

  • Le vrai GROOVE. What is important is music !!!! The words dont have interest. Just an accompaniement. 0.01% / 0.99%... I am french, and i dont understand the words, i dont care totally. I love Les Mac Cann for the groove. He is awesome. I know him from i am 10 years old.

  • Le vrai GROOVE

  • I'm looking for a vocal performance of "All Strung Out on You." Anyone have any leads?

  • 2:09 -CASINO

  • It's funny. I lived next door to Les from 1999 to 2002, and, though I knew he played the piano (as his tunes always traveled through the walls), I had no idea he was such a jazz legend until years after I moved away. Awesome song, Les!

  • @ 0:25-0:30 is used in Spill.com reviews intro...

  • My dad used to blast this song in the house when I was a kid. My mom hated it, but we loved it!!!!!

  • My Dad used to blast this sone in the house when I was a kid. My mom hated it, but we loved it. Good Memories!!!!

  • This is what the non believers of rock and roll were listening to at the time

  • Definitely a classic, love it!

  • This song was in the movie "Casino".

  • I agree. The "GODDAMMIT" part is perhaps the most effective part of the song besides the groove.

  • GODDAMMIT!!!!!!!you go les man.you be tha' man!!!!!

  • For me, a Vietnam era veteran, this song, Credence Clearwater's Fortunate Son, and Marvin Gaye's "What's goin' On" most clearly evoke that time. The truth then, the truth now.

  • Swiss Movement is a great album Les McCan and Eddie Harris slamin it Cold Duck style!

  • I'm astounded at the reception I got for posting this song. Gil Scott-Heron did much better stuff in the day but he was too real for most people to handle. This song had a good mix of levity and reality, not to mention a killer groove.

  • @schreinervideo Yeah, Gil Scott was one of the best ever...A hipster in the Bohemian tradition.....winter in America. That about says it all......

  • @schreinervideo Yeah, Gil Scott was one of the best ever...A hipster in the Bohemian tradition.....winter in America. That about says it all......still applies ...the guy was way ahead of his time!!

  • @schreinervideo Gil Scott way way ahead of his time!

  • @schreinervideo ..Yeah.. ain't it amazing what you can do when you have a KILLin' groove and some intelligent, timely lyrics?? People WILL ACTually listen !!!

  • So much fits today.

So many great artists have passed.

Too bad the good ones pass and not enough of the garbage ones don't.

  • Dope song... Ray J included this song on his "This Ain't A Game" album as an interlude... That's how I discovered it. Glad I found it.

  • hi all

love this, still rings true now..where is this kind of talent theses days?it must be the nixon bush doctrine taken hold . we can do this thing again, remove the anal retentive pukes that think they are where it's at. unity is the answer. i know those times have passed but there are many new causes to express ourselves about.

we can do better than the funk that is not even funky anymore, let's party till we die.

  • WE LOVE YOU LES, ALOHA & MAHALO ALWAYS, JO & BEAR

  • First real jazz album I ever bought, along with "Don't Mess with Mr. T", first year in college, all those years ago.....I was hoping you had some film here......recorded on a whim, just a jam...Benny Bailey (trumpet) was unaware of the recording until he heard it later in the states - more info in the liner notes of the 30th Anniversary extended edition - just a great album...thanks for the reminder!

  • One of my dad's favorite songs. Me and my brother had to clean the house every Saturday before we could go out to play...........This was one of my fave songs played as we whistled while we worked ;-D

  • Oil spills and republicans. Slaughterhouse. And they put them in charge? Trying to make it real compared to what?? And another matter: what the fuck did they do with Juice?

  • the best part is when he says "GODDAMN IT"

  • And I was just in Las Vegas man and was watching the damn money!!!! First woman in. Being Safe!!!!

at a World Peace Conference. Seeing that beautiful toy city. People can go there just to see the sights. The big statue of Liberty. Remember. With the flame she is holding?

  • 2:10

    Goddamn it!!

  • it is definitely the s!!!!!!!!!!!!t

  • Sock it to me.

  • I first heard in late April or early May '75 when I was conceived.

Jokes aside, it is a truly awesome song, is there another upload somewhere with better audio quality?

  • its fascinating to read wut u guys write, i think that this is the closest ive bn to someone that was drafted in the late 60s

  • Heard this the first time in 1971. I had just graduated from the University of Texas. One of the last things I did was protest at the LBJ library dedication. I have some great pics. We released 1,000 black balloons just when Nixon was speaking. Came to Kauai the first then. Met a black gal and turned her on to the movie "Shaft," which I had already seen in Texas. She turned me on this song on the album "Swiss Movement." 40 years later, I got on cd.

  • Man, they just don't make them like they used to...

  • God Damn it!

  • way ahead....

  • I had this album on an 8-track, When I was in High School. WORE IT OUT!

  • I was on a free trip supplied by my uncle sam in 69 when I first heard Les McCann at a club in Thailand during liberty. The words have as much meaning now as they did then.Les may not have wrote this song but he sure made it his.

  • Ray Charles cover of this song on "Genius and Friends" does this song proud :)

  • yeah...what memories..i was drafted And this chart said it all.............69' at least i made it.

  • That's Benny Bailey on the trumpet--what a unique cat! Great! Damn!

  • This is by Les McCann and Eddie Harris... Not just McCann.

  • Tune was written by Eugene McDaniels.

  • @shpilk I'm saying that it's McCann and Harris performing it

  • it's cool .. just so few folks have ever heard of McDaniels, I think it's important to remember who wrote the song.

  • This still plays in my house. Live at Montreaux.. Love this song.. tells it like it is. One of the best and I am a rock and roll fan.

  • @Sreewtyui Yes this song cuts right throw the BS !

  • oh god....we're not worthy

    ur too cool

  • We lay ourselves with weeping prostrate

And cry to thee within the tomb:

Rest thou gently, gently rest! Rest, O ye exhausted members! This your tomb and this tombstone Shall for ev'ry anguished conscience Be a pillow of soft comfort And the spirit's place of rest. Most content, slumber here the eyes in rest.

  • man i love the roberta flack version of this... not to be found on youtube though someone please!

  • Vietnam

  • I've heard the song before, and I love it. What I'd like to know is what it's a protest against?

  • @Seattlecarnut The human condition!

  • @420gma Human condition?

  • In Vegas, everybody's gotta watch everybody else. Since the players are looking to beat the casino, the dealers are watching the players. The box men are watching the dealers. The floor men are watching the box men. The pit bosses are watching the floor men. The shift bosses are watching the pit bosses. The casino manager is watching the shift bosses. I'm watching the casino manager. And the eye-in-the-sky is watching us all.

  • LOL well said

  • @Anorakus it's great that (at least) 15 people heard this song soley because of casino. i love the movie and i adore the song. and i very much respect your choice to recall the sheer essence that represents this all as a cultural staple.

  • @Anorakus you and all of the other 15 people who thumbed up are cool as f*ck!

  • @Anorakus Don't let 'em catch you countin' cards.

  • @Anorakus LMAO I thought the exact same thing, CASINO !!

  • I agree Ms. Amor...He's The Man! Not afraid to speak his mind.and put to great music! I Love it!

  • Love you Les! You said it best!

  • didnt stanley turrentine do a version? wish i knew more jazz... more of a metalhead. just like in metal, some jazz people need to catagorize. and like in metal some think, or should say know that theirs is the only music that counts. oh well...edgar cayce said all civilizations will rise and fall, its what growth will be left as a legacy that counts.

  • Forty Years ago, sitting on the lawn in front of the Student Union at Wayne State University, blowing some killer weed, listening to Swiss Movement and Compared to What!! Man, this vibe just does not ever fade! Jam on Les! Jam on!!!

  • possession is the motivation, that is hangin' up, any health care plan for poor people.....

  • God damnit!

Trying to make it real compared to What!

  • Majestic.

  • Rings even truer today.

  • oops! I clicked thumbs down and I meant thumbs up! Sorry! This is so true. Gene McDaniels knew what he was talking about then and still does today! That Les McCann chose to record Gene's song and then get an all-time hit with it is fantastic!

  • half of one doubt

    they call it treason

forty years ago that was a very healing statement to be able to announce

that a person can disagree strongly with some aspect of their government's

policy and still be a devout american

  • it still is

  • High energy.

  • Explosive....

  • 40 years after 1st hearing this in middle school and it's still the S.....T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • EFIN cool!!!....

  • For a different take on the same subject, listen to " I'd Love To Change The World" by Ten Years After.

  • One of the finest tunes ever written!

  • "GodDamnit Tryin to make it real compared to what" that's where you know he was really gettin it to it. Love that part

  • Le premier CD que j'ai acheté de ma vie !..dans les années..là ou sont apparus les premiers lecteurs.Quel cadeau ! Un monument que ce morceau ! Les McCann et cie...Thank you !!!

  • I just love this ol' tune!

  • if it weren't for the date writen on the top you would think this song was recorded today !! nothin ever changes !!! SAD !!!

  • coulda' been written 1000 years ago or yesterday. still hasn't changed. Gene McDaniels is nothing if not a timeless truthsayer. Yet he's always ahead of his time. Check out "Parasite" on his Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse from 1970 and "Alien" on Screams and Whispers currently on CDBaby. The guy is still pissed off and right-ous!

  • no this is what i call music. :)

  • "Possession is the motivation that is hanging up the godamm nation" Should replace "E pluribus unum" as our motto.

  • "We always seem to end up in a rut". Ain't it the truth, ain't it the truth!

  • Play on brothas...play on!!!

  • There will never be another like this. This is REAL JAZZ. It dont get any better than this.

    Jeff Wordlaw

    Battle Creek, Mi.

  • well, in my humble opinion the real jazz is duke ellington, parker, rollins, coltrane exc..this one is called SOUL JAZZ..cheerio

  • You can call it jelly beans if you want to, but I'll still listen to it. Over and over.

  • If you read the jacket notes to the cd what made this performance so unique is that it was by total chance and unrehersed.

Very well done for such an encounter.

    MCMP 2009

  • i didn't know this was eugene mcdaniels, is there a recording available??

  • Les McCann and Eddie Harris "Live at Montreux " has the a truly electrifying version. Check out Eugene (Gene) McDaniels "Screams and Whispers" for more great McDaniels lyrics- soon to be released (August 2009) on ITunes and CD Baby

  • Yes! it now available! I know it's on CD Baby right now, but iTunes hasn't picked it up yet. Check out Gene on CD Baby - I think it is listed under Gene McDaniels, but might be under Eugene McDaniels -- search for both! There's more music coming, too -- a rediscovered never released set of recordings with Terry Lightfoot as well as recordings of Gene's sons' music will follow soon hopefully!

  • not yet, but there will be! Gene did record this, but it was never released. But it may be released on itunes soon! Hopefully before the end of 2009!

  • Eddie. Les. Jazz. Wonderful. Unique. 1969. Unbelieveable. Compared To What is the question. Thanks.

  • Les McCann swings it on the piano big time while Benny Bailey and Eddie Harris duel on trumpet and sax...

Jazz doesn't get any better than this. I hope some day a video of this performance will surface cuz it must be smokin!

  • I AGREE.

  • Try Roberta Flack's rendition of this on the record called 'First Take'

  • Heard this from "Casino". Can't get it off my head now.

  • I remember first hearing this song on WRTI in Philly back in the early 70's I was very young, probley in pre-school. I used to think my Uncle sang this song becasue he was a singer and he had a really scatchy voice...when I used to hear this song on the radi I would say......"That's Uncle Ray!"

  • I heard this tune on XM40 Deep Trax w/Earl Bailey and I can't believe I found it on here thx

  • I heard this in the movie casino and I've been looking for it for a few months now...."gotdammit try to make it real compared to what" lol I love it!

  • I remember that line from when I was a kid. I too fell in love with it.
