I can remember my parents and their friends all getting together at a certain house and they would play this song over and over, and you would hear them yell out the GODDAMMIT part. My friends and I were really young then, and use to laugh when the GODDAMMIT part came on. Then all of us kids would reinact this song for our parents and we would put a lot of emphasis on the GODDAMIT part. They laughed at us. GODAMMIT, what a great song.
Well all I know is , this is Music and DAMN GOOD MUSIC and brings back good good memories shared with Dad & Mom on a Summer night god rest there souls pop's used to dance me to sleep as a baby to Les Mc Cain ,Eddie Harris,Tommy Dorsey . Good Music I want a glass of Cold Duck right now.
Le vrai GROOVE. What is important is music !!!! The words dont have interest. Just an accompaniement. 0.01% / 0.99%... I am french, and i dont understand the words, i dont care totally. I love Les Mac Cann for the groove. He is awesome. I know him from i am 10 years old.
It's funny. I lived next door to Les from 1999 to 2002, and, though I knew he played the piano (as his tunes always traveled through the walls), I had no idea he was such a jazz legend until years after I moved away. Awesome song, Les!
For me, a Vietnam era veteran, this song, Credence Clearwater's Fortunate Son, and Marvin Gaye's "What's goin' On" most clearly evoke that time. The truth then, the truth now.
I'm astounded at the reception I got for posting this song. Gil Scott-Heron did much better stuff in the day but he was too real for most people to handle. This song had a good mix of levity and reality, not to mention a killer groove.
@schreinervideo Yeah, Gil Scott was one of the best ever...A hipster in the Bohemian tradition.....winter in America. That about says it all......still applies ...the guy was way ahead of his time!!

at a World Peace Conference. Seeing that beautiful toy city. People can go there just to see the sights. The big statue of Liberty. Remember. With the flame she is holding?
Heard this the first time in 1971. I had just graduated from the University of Texas. One of the last things I did was protest at the LBJ library dedication. I have some great pics. We released 1,000 black balloons just when Nixon was speaking. Came to Kauai the first then. Met a black gal and turned her on to the movie "Shaft," which I had already seen in Texas. She turned me on this song on the album "Swiss Movement." 40 years later, I got on cd.
I was on a free trip supplied by my uncle sam in 69 when I first heard Les McCann at a club in Thailand during liberty. The words have as much meaning now as they did then.Les may not have wrote this song but he sure made it his.

In Vegas, everybody's gotta watch everybody else. Since the players are looking to beat the casino, the dealers are watching the players. The box men are watching the dealers. The floor men are watching the box men. The pit bosses are watching the floor men. The shift bosses are watching the pit bosses. The casino manager is watching the shift bosses. I'm watching the casino manager. And the eye-in-the-sky is watching us all.
@Anorakus it's great that (at least) 15 people heard this song soley because of casino. i love the movie and i adore the song. and i very much respect your choice to recall the sheer essence that represents this all as a cultural staple.

Yes! it now available! I know it's on CD Baby right now, but iTunes hasn't picked it up yet. Check out Gene on CD Baby - I think it is listed under Gene McDaniels, but might be under Eugene McDaniels -- search for both! There's more music coming, too -- a rediscovered never released set of recordings with Terry Lightfoot as well as recordings of Gene's sons' music will follow soon hopefully!
I remember first hearing this song on WRTI in Philly back in the early 70's I was very young, probley in pre-school. I used to think my Uncle sang this song becasue he was a singer and he had a really scatchy voice...when I used to hear this song on the radi I would say......"That's Uncle Ray!"
Love, love, love this track! Thanks for posting!

Yes! it now available!

Eddie. Les. Jazz. Wonderful. Unique. 1969. Unbelieveable. Compared To What is the question. Thanks.

Les McCann swings it on the piano big time while Benny Bailey and Eddie Harris duel on trumpet and sax...
Jazz doesn't get any better than this. I hope some day a video of this performance will surface cuz it must be smokin!

I remember first hearing this song on WRTI in Philly back in the early 70's I was very young, probley in pre-school. I used to think my Uncle sang this song becasue he was a singer and he had a really scatchy voice...when I used to hear this song on the radi I would say......"That's Uncle Ray!"
