@RawThc seriously? You would have wanted him to DIE 5 weeks earlier, just so he be associated with something so stupid as the "27 club". Do you think he would have wanted to be part of that club?
bssunday89 Hey, don't put words in my mouth! I merely stated the fact that Steve had barely missed the club. Most members like Robert Johnson (the first one), had died under shadowy conditions. It's good that Steve's death was not under a dubious cloud of self-destruction. And yes, its sad we lost him at only 28... Sorry if you misunderstood. Did you also know that Steve was born on the EXACT day as Ed King whom he replaced in the band? Peace... ♫♪

this is steves band Crawdad and I would say this was 75 or early 76 not too long before he joined skynyrd, Steve Gaines guitar, John Moss guitar, John Seaburg bass, Terry Emery keybords, & Ronnie Brooks drums, they were the greatest.
I agree with every word above. He was the best. And fuck you fate. Man what a band and why why why did they have to leave us. My hubby and son and I were in tears last night watching these videos.

Just the mention of Steve is still a gut punch whenever it's brought up-as big a loss as John Lennon,Marvin Gaye and Zappa.Losing this guy and this band will ALWAYS be on of life's MOST f*cked up realities.
Thanks for this. Emery was a good keyboard player, but it's hard to beat Billy Powell. BTW, the sheet music for Powell's "I Know a Little" piano solo can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm - note-for-note.
I can't believe how hot this band sounds. Man, this must be about 1975 or so. I was a club gigging keyboard player in those days and every blue moon you would run into a nightclub band this talented. What a shame he went so soon.
I've read Steve Gaines NEVER took his guitar off his chest. Practiced all the time. Great song writer. Who knows where he'd be today. I guess that goes for everyone.
Bitter/sweet: I fell so hard done by that we didn't see what Gaines and Skynyrd were going to do but ....so thankful they squeezed out my that one Street Survivors album together....RIP
Fast fingers Gaines. I have always been fascinated with guitar players that could play songs with fast fingers, Steve was one of them. I didnt even know that he wrote this song before skynyrd. Baby Im amazed.
Steve gains was the greatest picker to ever touch a 6 string. skynyrd was damn lucky to have him, and stevie here would've gave SRV a run for his money lol. tis a shame he only has that one album " one in the sun " though. would love to heard some more stuff on his own. RVZ knew what he had and show cased him on " street survivors " damn you fate for taking the best picker ever!!!
@ackide Stevie Ray was great..But Steve was a genius...He was doing stuff up until that point lots of people hadn't done...Clean, fluid, rock, blues, jazz plus playing slide on a Gibson "FRET LESS WONDER" was a feat in itself...R.I.P. Steve you were the man..
@ackide Truly one of the best ever.....a monster talent......one in the un is a great album....one I have had the privelge of having for a LONG time. We can hear the greatness that was there.....the greatness that wasn't realaized.........Idon't know if he could have given SRV a run, but, God, it would have been awesome to hear to battle of those two blues players, playin' it out!
@ackide No Doubt Cuzz Dicky Betts and Steve to me were bar all best guitarist ever. I now people throw in SRV AND who was that dude with Cream, He wasnt american though. Ive got a pic f Skynard when I believe Va Zant was 14. Its killer. Later

There is no doubt Gaines was a guitar god. Although what ultimately happened to the band was horrible, Steve was damn lucky to latch on to Skynyrd when he did. They were in their zenith and Gaines had more energy in the tip of his little finger than most men can conjure up in a life time.
I still remember getting the flamed street survivors album back in 77 and thinking; Holy cr@p that guitar player sure can play!
Ahh here it is Crawdad. Hello all you Okies and those from Mudville. Sorry I've been gone for 20 years in this shit hole called California where 95 percent of the idiots live in the world. This sounds much better than the old tape I heard many many years ago. Can't wait to leave and get back home for good; where common sense and sanity are common place.
so many great musicians gone before their time. jimi, dimebag, steve gaines, freddie mercury, most of skynyrd, duane allman, randy rhoads, the rev, john bonham, and countless others.
was talking about one of the other guitar players not knowing what key he was in most of the time, steve was the most talented guitar player in the band, and his band before skynyrd was lucky enough to get him, would have blown skynyrd off the stage
@Fletchman54352 , i watched steve play for years before he joined skynyrd, allen collins was a good guitar player i agree with you on that point, gary well lets just say when god said tone, he thought he said bone, and sent his dog after it, but let me tell you, steve was the real deal, he could sing better than most people out there, and could play the guitar like very few, now or then, i hope you notice how much better allen became after steve joined the band, his licks were much better
i rather would say fuck you to airplane mechanics who ignored those engine problems and let that plane take off.
i mean they saw flames comin outta of them on previous flight. but still they did nothing about it, and surprise surprise what happened... well we all know that.
@rawzone1 way too soon. Steve was robbed. He had some of the best vocals and guitar.....ever. I love Warren Haynes and SRV is my fav, but Steve G was up there.
nape1979, this is steve band crawdad, steve gaines, john moss, john seaburg, terry emery, & ron brooks. ron brooks was the drummer, he passed away last year, was one incredible drummer, always right in the pocket, and for those of you that think skynyrd did this much better, get your ears checked, everybody in this band was at least in the right key
@redbudslim I agree that Steve and his band done great stuff but it sounds like you are knocking Lynyrd Skynyrd, that wouldnt make sense it would be saying Steve went to a inferior band he was to smart for that but anyway i like both and think Steve and Skynyrd would have just kept making each other better after all he was part of SKYNYRD in the end.Take Care
This is really fast but some of that is from the transfer...if you check the pitch you'll see it's almost a half pitch too fast...so it sounds a bit chipmunky. Steve was one badass player/singer/writer.
steve gaines died way to soon. ive recently got some his original songs recorded in a bar in galena ks. a place called "the ranch". it was his last night with the crawdads before he joined skynyrd. He was from miami ok. He had alot to offer the world of music and i have no doubt that he would have outgrown skynyrd and be came a very successful single recording artist!! this is just one the cool songs he wrote. i just wish skynyrd would have left the arrangement alone.
funny I never knew Steve Gains was so great, I saw some pics of him and a bit of performace footage the other day and thought he looked like he was the weakest part of the band, but holy cow he was maybe the best after hearing this, awesome.
RVZ made the comment.."The boy is a guitarplaying/singing/songwriting fool and we will all be standing in Steve's shadow one day.'..Listen to Street Survivors" He wrote or co-wrote half of the songs...He was RVZ's new songwriting partner and he scared the crap out of Allen Collins and Gary Rossington into playing their best in years..Listen to his parts on "THAT SMELL"...Ed King even says.."STEVE GAINES WAS A GENIUS ..AND HIS PARTS ARE A BEAR TO LEARN..I COULD NEVER PLAY THEM LIKE HE DID"..
You are so right. Gaines is in the pantheon of the very best guitar players ever in any genre of music, he could have clearly excelled in jazz, or blues if he had wanted to he was that good.
i think i heard that ronnie van zant once said steve would be bigger and better than the rest of the band i wish he got the chance to prove ronnie right
All, if you like this version by Steve Gaines, go check out one of his live versions of Alone in the Multitude. The guy could really play a slide too,
saltwaterrebel hate to speak ill of the dead but this is terry emery, he could play circles around billy powell. If ths band had got a break, they would have hit the big time for sure.
No doubt this cat was on his way up. God only knows the direction he would have taken Skynyrd. Just the fact that Van Zant allowed him to sing two songs on Street Surviors is impressive.
He sang on "You Got That Right" and I beleve he did "Aint No Good Life" It's been many years so my memory may be fuzzy. But he did do some of the vocals on Street Surviors.
Plus it was STEVE who came up with the guitar arrangement on "THAT SMELL"..that was according to Leslie Hawkins and Gene Odom who said they watched the band work it up in 'sound check". for about a month...
it was actually allen collins believe it or not because gary rossington and him were best friends and after the oak tree crsh allen thought he was loosing his friend so he wrote that smell
@toolshedmusicman Allen helped RVZ write the Lyrics...Steve came up with the guitar arrangement according to Kevin Elson their sound man who said he watched them work up the song in sound checks...
They're putting together a damn good version of Skynyrd in heaven right about now -- everyone from the golden era except Artimus and Gary. Maybe they could get Hendrix to sit in for a third guitar. --LOL
RIP Ronnie Brooks and Steve! If anyone is interested in hearin Crawdad original stuff check out the Crawdad myspace page. My friend runs the page and we're always glad to hear from Crawdad fans!
This was Steve's band, CRAWDAD right before he went to Skynyrd. Members were of course the GREAT STEVE GAINE, the late RON BROOKS (drums), TERRY EMERY (key boards), John Moose Moss (guitar), John Seaberg (bass guitar)......great band. Cassie would always step in a sing when she was home.
@WoodPineOkie LOVE STEVE THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS MUCH...but I also love studying SKYNYRD and ALL its members, where can I learn more about Cassie and Steve if possible?? :)
Ronnie was having vocal problems. He was wanting to leave Lynyrd Skynyrd, he was wanting to quit the band and the road. He wanted to become a producer, at the time of his death he was producing Molly Hatchet's album. That might be the reason why the surviving members of Skynyrd don't like Hatchet. They never said who the person was he was going to turn vocals over to.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
funny how they all seem to die when they contemplate quitting.. was just reading about cobain earlier. Don't quit on them jews. They'll kill ya accidentally.
My father used to hangout with Steve Gaines and has told me multiple times about how they used to smoke weed with Steve Gaines' parents back in Miami, Oklahoma
what a treasure ! An upbeat texas swing kind of thing , displaying his fine songwriting craftsmanship , his fabulous guitar talents and vocals in rare find, love that guy!

Skynyrd did it much better

This is really fast but some of that is from the transfer...if you check the pitch you'll see it's almost a half pitch too fast...so it sounds a bit chipmunky. Steve was one badass player/singer/writer.

Really dig this. Way more than the Skynard version.

steve gaines died way to soon. ive recently got some his original songs recorded in a bar in galena ks. a place called "the ranch". it was his last night with the crawdads before he joined skynyrd.

Matlike1 2 years ago 3
SteveGaines 2 years ago 3
You are so right. Gaines is in the pantheon of the very best guitar players ever in any genre of music, he could have clearly excelled in jazz, or blues if he had wanted to he was that good.
Libertarian369 2 years ago
Steve was the best guitar player in the band.

i think i heard that ronnie van zant once said steve would be bigger and better than the rest of the band i wish he got the chance to prove ronnie right

All, if you like this version by Steve Gaines, go check out one of his live versions of Alone in the Multitude. The guy could really play a slide too,
bulldog530 2 years ago
saltwaterrebel hate to speak ill of the dead but this is terry emery, he could play circles around billy powell. If ths band had got a break, they would have hit the big time for sure.

No doubt this cat was on his way up. God only knows the direction he would have taken Skynyrd. Just the fact that Van Zant allowed him to sing two songs on Street Surviors is impressive.

I did not know that thats cool can you tell me what 2 he sang on??? seeing as I think hes cool guirta player
spmandmtgr 2 years ago
He sang on "You Got That Right" and I beleve he did "Aint No Good Life" It's been many years so my memory may be fuzzy. But he did do some of the vocals on Street Surviors.

he co-wrote and did back up vocals on you got that right and sang the entire aint no good life

Plus it was STEVE who came up with the guitar arrangement on "THAT SMELL"..that was according to Leslie Hawkins and Gene Odom who said they watched the band work it up in 'sound check". for about a month...
SteveGaines 2 years ago 2
it was actually allen collins believe it or not because gary rossington and him were best friends and after the oak tree crsh allen thought he was loosing his friend so he wrote that smell
toolshedmusicman 2 years ago
@toolshedmusicman Allen helped RVZ write the Lyrics...Steve came up with the guitar arrangement according to Kevin Elson their sound man who said he watched them work up the song in sound checks...

They're putting together a damn good version of Skynyrd in heaven right about now -- everyone from the golden era except Artimus and Gary. Maybe they could get Hendrix to sit in for a third guitar. --LOL

In 1977 Ronnie was having severe trouble with polyps on his vocal cords and was rumored to be turning over lead vocal to Steve.
ferlesldr 3 years ago
Ronnie was having vocal problems. He was wanting to leave Lynyrd Skynyrd, he was wanting to quit the band and the road. He wanted to become a producer, at the time of his death he was producing Molly Hatchet's album. That might be the reason why the surviving members of Skynyrd don't like Hatchet. They never said who the person was he was going to turn vocals over to.

funny how they all seem to die when they contemplate quitting.. was just reading about cobain earlier. Don't quit on them jews. They'll kill ya accidentally.
