I found a blue shell in my back yard some distance from the water. A seagull must have dropped hime there aS he was missing his smaller left claw. I returned him to the water soon after we took a couple of pictures. He was carefully placed a few feet from the water and he got his bearings and then went in and dissapeared. I hope he grows up and remembers what I did for him! Poor little fella,

I live in Bristol RI and Blue Shell crabs live in the waters surrounding the town. I live about 1000 to 2000 ft from the water. But today I had a visistor in my back yard! Our dogs were barking at something in the rear corner where we have a rock garden where the rain water will drain if there is a heavy rain. We found a small 5 in blue shell there and he wasnt happy at all. He was missing his smaller claw. Then I realized a seagull or something must have dropped him into my yard.

Yeah, it isn't a silver bullet for cancer or climate change but it could help solve growing environmental and economic problems in areas that rely on wild crab fishing all over the world.

If you think there are more important problems to be solved you could get a degree and start researching.

Anyway I agree that protecting an animal specie is important, only to me it seemed more they were trying to "produce" food for men.

They key is a balanced diet. Many seafoods (meat) have omega-3 which is also good for humans.

It doesn't make that much sense to have them moult sooner than they should. Why can't people just be happy with eating their soft shelled crabs for a couple of months? They can be eaten as a regular crab in the same fashion by a pair of shell clippers. It seems like these scientists ran out of real things to do, like solve world hunger. They're blocking a receptor for a gene that inhibits moulting essentially turning that gene off. What they're using is already produced by the crab...it's just not produced often enough to maintain a marketable supply.
