@MrJinCamty G'day again... Ah, I see that I wasn't the only one to spot the need for a Test-Flying Helmet..! Fine, good boy. But, why hop around at the limits of Control in a Paddock that had a Pole, BETWEEN You & the Camera...? My kids saw me crash, on T/O... This game has BIG Penalties... Pick a better spot, or next time your son could be lending his film to the Coroner. Ask @xjet to Fly there ? And, seriously consider Dual Time, learning Eggbeaters. You've had the Peaks !
So glad I found this video. Your son is very proud of your eoffort and courage! The helicopter looks like a nice design. Likes to turn to the right a bit, though. How did you end up correcting that? Was that the 5Kg?
@warmfreeze No sorry. Work has got in the way of living at the moment, but I'm soon to fix that. There are a few mods that need testing and I need a distraction free weekend with good weather. Cheers.
MrJincamty... Amazing, I'm thrilled to see you guys doing this. I have to say from the amount of time I spent flying rotary I was taught to never let the chopper move left/right while so close to the ground (dynamic rollover). Incase this happens just drop that collective! However, it looks like you are learning like the very first of them did and I cannot imagine the excitement being that you built it! You are the man and I agree, your kid must and should be proud! Use caution and keep it up!
love what your doing, youv'e got the balls of an elephant, but please, please remember the golden rule, dont overstretch yourself or the machine, take all the time in the world ,cos youv'e got all the time in the world.engineers have brilliant heads on their shoulders, keep it there!!!
@tomsacadden Hi, thanks for your comments. By nature, I'm a very nervous creature, I hate loud noises and surprises, so to get this thing off the ground is a huge achievement for me. I don't plan on doing anything more than hovering in ground effect. But................
That is awesome my friend. Your kid is lucky to have you to look up to. not many kids out there could say my dad is bloody brilliant he made and flown a helicopter. He has a real cool person to look up to. would love to see more of this.
People with no real sense of adventure simply don't understand the need to push your limits, both physically and mentally, they see it as reckless and foolish. You can't really fault them for it but at the same time you do feel a little sorry for them. I can guarantee you that everyone involved with this video has a perfect understanding of the risks involved as well as the consequences. This father is teaching his son more than anyone can imagine.
@shawnlund Thanks for the thoughtful comments. There is a lot of preparation, both mechanically and mentally before each run. There is a lot that can go wrong, that I'm well aware of. It's a great feeling when everything goes to plan. It scares the hell out of me, and that's a good thing. Cheers.
I would'nt do such extremely dangerous experiment in front of my children, especialy if they are in the shrapnel shelling distance of the blades, let alone the trauma they would have to carry away!
I would'nt do this extremely dangerous experiment in front of my children, especialy if they are in the shrapnel shelling distance of blades, let alone the trauma they would have to carry away!
@ALLERTORLOVER69 Hi, According to the simulator, I'm using about 44hp to lift about 330kg in ground effect. You would need a fairly large rotor diameter and preferably a coaxial setup to maximize available power.
Absolutely fantastic. It's brains and balls that got the Wright brothers off the ground and the same thing appears to be working well for you. Keep at it, looking forward to the next video.
@shawnlund Thanks for your comments. I can't believe it's been over a year since I've done any testing!
Work is certainly getting in the way of my hobbies. Time to flag work I think. I have a modified cruise control acting as an engine governor that I'm busting to test.
from the camera angle I thought he was going to be a pole dancer looks like you did a nice job building your helo but with that open cockpit that helmet aint going to help you if it rolls over I thinking you need to get some lessons with duel control and get a good thet pilot to test you ship and help you grt it test flown and trimed even if you have to pay someone it will be worth it Just saying
Remember there are a few emergency procedures you need to get down including stuck pedals and autorotations. I couldn't imagine teaching myself a 180 auto landing. Best of luck to you. I'm definitely jealous.
I am very impressed. I would encourage you to get some dual instruction. You really appear unsafe. That ground hover is not controlled and you are setting yourself up for dynamic rollover or striking an object. When the aircraft yaws or drifts you are not correcting it rather you are along for the ride. And god forbid you have an emergency. You done a great job thus far, ut you need to learn some basic flying skills.
@MyDogBob2001 Thanks for your comments. At the moment of lifting up both skids, I was almost full left peddle and full left cyclic. The loss of control with yaw was mainly due to rigging and bad rotor speed management. The little control I did have seemed predictable and smooth. The simulator has helped a lot with my coordination since this video.
@MyDogBob2001 Totally aggree. Bouncing around with skids coming into contact with ground is very dangerous! Hard too know what best hover height would be but at least one foot hover. Also would not be a bad idea to get a bit of dual instruction in say a hughs 300. Get em too at least show you a few hovering engine failures. looks good well done!
@killirishred Done that... I can plug the helicopter into a computer and fly it using XPlane. All the parameters have been placed into PlaneMaker , which once opened in XPlane, can be flown as a very accurate simulation. The main problem is learning to fly by pure visual input as apposed to normal instruction.
This dummy is going to hurt himself or others what a piece of junk !!!!! Hey guy go buy a real heli n stop mess-in with things u know nothing about all yr going to do is crash real badly cuz u think yr cool then yr going to be crying when u do crash.....

your right drift is most likely a combo between Translating Tendency from tail rotor thrust, and center of Gravity being off.. Of CG is way to the right and the over amount of left stick to stop drift is whats causing your left skid to "drag"
Love it though! Just design trial and error.. Good Luck!!

Keep your eyes on the horizon as you break ground and get light on the skids.
Use you peripheral vision to 'pre-sense' movement and arrest it automatically prior to it becoming a major movement. Let your head be on a 'swivel' and floating to sense movements. If you are looking down, you will not be able to correctly sense the horizon, and in turn your impending motions. Can't help with the weight, but a bit of mast angle might help to the right.
