@mbaquara The plane weighs more, but the wings also produce tons of lift. The fundamentals of landing a plane without a motor remain the same: Maintain speed at maximum L/D until time to flare, slowly flare and enter ground effect, keep the plane flying off the ground (or water) until it finally stalls a foot off the surface. The mechanics are not difficult, if you keep your cool, which is the REAL hard thing this pilot did. If you panic you'll lose control. Saludo.
How do you know it was a 1000 fish? Is there figures out that state that? If that is true then this is truly a disaster of epic proportions. They needed to get that plane out immediately. Oh No how sad.
Are you fucking joking? A shit load of people just had a brush with death and you are worried about the fish? You are a prime example of an over the top enviromentalist. In this world there should be balance yes, but at the end of the day human life is the most important. If you care so much about the fish, go jump in the fucking river, and clean it your self!
Why the anger dogcrick, you have serious anger issues. The plane landing in the Hudson was sadly unavoidable and while i feel for the people ,no one actually died, and while they celebrated the fact that the pilot, (who was only doing what he was paid to do), was some kind of superhero, they left the plane in the water leaking poisonous chemicals and pollutants. We wont know just how much marine life died as a result. I hope one day you see my point and embrace this world we live in.
Why the anger? It's not anger, it's frustration! I am from one of the most beautifull places in this country, and now live in another one of the most beautiful places in this country and I have a very high level of respect for the world we live in. I most def. play my part! It's just that people like you ruin good people's life's all the time to save fish and birds. Entire families broken up and homes lost because of a group of enviromentalist on a mission to "save" something! Priorities!
You are not living in one of your video games you know. This is the real world and the environment we live in is more important than you can possibly know. Maybe when you grow up more you will realise that and refrain from using insults and swearing at people who care. Please take time to think about it. You know it makes sense. And if I were to jump in the water it was a river not a lake.
I do care. Not to the fucking ridiculous extent you do though. There's nothing that can be done about a plane crashing into a river, take your crazy ass hippie beliefs somewhere else.
There were 2 other airports that the gung ho pilot could have made if he had tried. I really dont care much for airplanes they in themselves pollute the atmosphere and force people to breath the carbons and ions of pollution. I will try to understand what causes your hostility and send you healing Karma and peace.
They did not need to land there, there were 2 other airports that were nearby. Pollution and your anger and hostility are not what makes this world a better place. I will send you good karma and peace my friend.
Uh, they didn't have anywhere near enough speed or altitude to make a landing at an airport. They would have ended up crashing into the city. I was hoping this was a joke at first but you actually care about a couple of fish more than you do the human race. I love animals but if 213 people could survive or 1000 fish could survive, I'd pick the people.
patch, there was no way that the plane could have made it to any airport. The engine could not have made it instanly crashing. The pilot is a hero. He did the right thing. If u were on that plane you wouldnt complain about the 1000 fish that died. So think about that.
The Pilot did the only right thing. He lost almost all engine power on BOTH engines. Trying to reach an airport would have resulted in a major tragedy. The Pilot acted DIRECTLY instead of following check lists first and his DIRECT actions saved all the lives on board.
A pilot is not going to arbitrarily choose a place to ditch a plane. Don't you think, if he had the chance, he would have landed it at an airport? But in NYC, no matter what airport, it's not as easy as turning your bicycle around and going down another street. He'd have to line it up and get into the circuit again. Not easy when one engine has just died and you don't have full control of the plane. Give the guy credit. Besides, that river was polluted way before that plane got there.
personally i would not make a circuit without an engine, unless its a glider of course. i'd prolly just make a very long final and skip the circuit all togather... dont you think?
This is not the only successful water ditching. Back in the U.S.S.R a Tupolev 134 I think landed in St. Petersburg after the engines failed, everyone was OK. Then again, two more landed in lakes for certain reasons. All the passengers survived and one of the planes, the Yak-40 is, or was still used. Then a plane overshot the Runway at Kai Tak and successfully ditched. I'm not saying its easy, but its happened before.

Somewhere on utube there is a video of that 1st plane (amateur) - you can hear bystanders hollering that it was a military plane, not a commercial jet
Actually there is, but conspiracy theory believers say it is a missile. I just don't understand why would the government send an airplane into the WTC and a missile into the pentagon?? short of kamikaze pilots???
Anyway, this is not 9/11 video, so why we are talking about 9/11 theories?
Search it on youtube, it is there, but the camera from far away, and it shows something white pass, then the building blow up. and it has slow frame rate, so maybe you saw that already.
very smart touching the rear of the plane down first so the engines didn't scoop as much water and tear the plane apart, like what happened to the hijacked ethiopian airlines jet
The hijacker was fighting with the pilot for control of the joystick when the Ethopian jet hit the water. That's why it was banked to port and tumbled into pieces when it hit the water.
yea i saw that your correct. its possible but you really wouldnt want to try at those speeds. if you look at the water on the hudson its smooth as silk.also its a huge river making a nice lined up runway.with all that i still wouldnt want to try it i would have gone for titaborough if i saw it close enough.man that pilots got some balls ,nice to see a pilot get some recognition instead of the blame "pilot error" you hear that shit all the time. peace man
Actually all airliners are designed to be able to land on water. That's why they all carry flotation devices. And there were successful water ladings before this one.
exactly, plus they make airplanes so that if they do land on water and the turbines do hit water first they're made in a way so that they just rip off instead of draging the plane
Yes, engines designed to break off. However in this case only one engine did. However plane maintained direction and nothing else broke. Perhaps engine that did fell off did it just before the aircraft stopped. Otherwise I would think, asymmetrical drag would make plane to rotate.
i was thinking the same thing , you can keep the gear up but the engines what do you do with them. my father fixes airplanes and he said that there is a bolt that holdes the engines on and in case of severe vibration it will shear off . like in case of loss of more than one fan blade. in that case you would get a turbofan rotating at god knows what rpm unbalanced . so im guessing that when it hit they just sheared off neatly.
