The fundamentals of landing a plane without a motor remain the same: Maintain speed at maximum L/D until time to flare, slowly flare and enter ground effect, keep the plane flying off the ground (or water) until it finally stalls a foot off the surface. The mechanics are not difficult, if you keep your cool, which is the REAL hard thing this pilot did. If you panic you'll lose control. Saludo.

The plane landing in the Hudson was sadly unavoidable and while i feel for the people ,no one actually died, and while they celebrated the fact that the pilot, (who was only doing what he was paid to do), was some kind of superhero, they left the plane in the water leaking poisonous chemicals and pollutants. We wont know just how much marine life died as a result. I hope one day you see my point and embrace this world we live in.

The Pilot did the only right thing. He lost almost all engine power on BOTH engines. Trying to reach an airport would have resulted in a major tragedy. The Pilot acted DIRECTLY instead of following check lists first and his DIRECT actions saved all the lives on board.

A pilot is not going to arbitrarily choose a place to ditch a plane. Don't you think, if he had the chance, he would have landed it at an airport? But in NYC, no matter what airport, it's not as easy as turning your bicycle around and going down another street. He'd have to line it up and get into the circuit again. Not easy when one engine has just died and you don't have full control of the plane. Give the guy credit. Besides, that river was polluted way before that plane got there.

This is not the only successful water ditching. Back in the U.S.S.R a Tupolev 134 I think landed in St. Petersburg after the engines failed, everyone was OK. Then again, two more landed in lakes for certain reasons. All the passengers survived and one of the planes, the Yak-40 is, or was still used. Then a plane overshot the Runway at Kai Tak and successfully ditched. I'm not saying its easy, but its happened before.

The hijacker was fighting with the pilot for control of the joystick when the Ethopian jet hit the water. That's why it was banked to port and tumbled into pieces when it hit the water.

Actually all airliners are designed to be able to land on water. That's why they all carry flotation devices. And there were successful water ladings before this one.

Yes, engines designed to break off. However in this case only one engine did. However plane maintained direction and nothing else broke. Perhaps engine that did fell off did it just before the aircraft stopped. Otherwise I would think, asymmetrical drag would make plane to rotate.

i was thinking the same thing , you can keep the gear up but the engines what do you do with them. my father fixes airplanes and he said that there is a bolt that holdes the engines on and in case of severe vibration it will shear off . like in case of loss of more than one fan blade. in that case you would get a turbofan rotating at god knows what rpm unbalanced . so im guessing that when it hit they just sheared off neatly.
