  • this is so punk.

  • hell ya...still got the wax...what a great rockin' song....

  • This is King Tone, baby! The music of my youth! This one goes out to you, Dave (aka The Mad Russian).

  • KING TONE! Bash/crash tune from a time when Rock was at its apex! Love it!

  • fucking love it UTAH GET ME TWO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • If you want to play music, think about something other than music. A lot.

  • Powerhouse. Exploding. What a number.

  • TRUE,WHY don`t THEY (Radio Slug`s)Play this OR other "LOVE" tune`s ?? NO Arthur LEE= NO Jimi Hendrix FLAT OUT ! They don`t play Jeff Beck W/ Rod ? But ZEP,oh hah over & over. DID we lose Rock to Clear Chanel & the Corp. CREAP`s of money ?

  • My wife and I were blessed to see three of the last concerts given by Arthur with Baby Lemonade at NYC's Bowery Ballroom. It was a life long dream since I was a teenage drummer in Houston to see LOVE, and I got my wish. Rest in peace Arthur, you gave us so much and left us way, way too soon...

  • This song derived its name from the fact that both Arthur Lee and his then girlfriend were born on the seventh day of the month.

  • Great comments guys! I even come back myself and give it a listen when I need a boost.

  • @ColoradoSurfrider the actual sound of an H- Bomb blast at 1:55

  • Radio Consultants SUCK! This song would get HEAVY rotation on MY "Golden Oldies Radio Station"

  • Awesome....

  • Sounds like Hendrix.

  • far ahead of its time in 1966, it sure left its mark on rock history

  • They played it tonight on Sons of Anarchy during the chase scene. Outstanding choice of music for pairing with a chase scene! Suprised that it hasn't been used before.

The first time I'd heard it was in the movie Bottle Rocket.

  • I've said it before numerous times on YouTube and I'll say it again; God Bless YouTube for making these Golden Oldies rarities available to us. Lotsa luck finding these rarities on mainstream Golden Oldies broadcast radio! LOL! You know the ones; the radio consultant tested Top-1000 Golden Oldies of all time. Yechhhh!

  • Wow...close to 100,000 hits....thank you everyone for enjoying one of my all time classics!

  • @ColoradoSurfrider i saw love at vito lido's where it all sarted

  • Trapped inside a night but I'm a day.

  • which version was in the movie point break?

  • this is fucking insane

  • This recording is one of my favorites from the 60s... I remember when I first heard it on the radio. Psychedelic punk.

  • Killer surf music! When I first heard this tune, I thought it was ingenious!

I thought, "These guys got something great here!" The way they did the song made me wish I could hear more of their stuff. I never knew the band's name until last year when I got a CD called "Nuggets" at the library. When I heard it again, I felt the exact same way I did back when it was released. WOW!!!

  • This Song Is Sonic Nitroglycreyne.

  • I will never forgive California and it's implementation of that ridiculous fucking three strikes policy for taking Arthur lee away from us.

  • Boo Bip Bip Boo Bip Bip Yeah! Dang !!I Memories of me and my best friend lovin' this tune when we were 8 years old. Thanks! for the upload.

  • I heard this song so many times back in the day and never knew who the artist was. Crazy how time and people slip away from us, we don't miss these things it seems until they are gone forever. RIP Arthur Lee, may your legacy live on through the many songs and video clips here in this virtual venue!

  • I found a 45 of this today, but its scratched to shit so it sounds right surreal when i play it.

  • i got their albums and was pleased to see this on the nuggets box set as well.

  • Great job, my gawd does that take me back to an age when I simply didn't care about one DAMN thing, and didn't have to for that matter. The world was going to be my oyster. And now 49 years later...... WTF happened? LMAO.

  • My, but how this so kills. My younger brother turned me on to this when it came out. Great audio/video-thanx! Regards, '62 Mathew St. (Total Retro Rock)

  • Summer of '66. I bought this record, put it on the turntable and cranked it up LOUD!!! My mom came in the room, turned it off, took the record off the turntable and shattered it into about one hundred pieces. she said I was not allowed to play that GARBAGE in her house.

Many years later, living on my own, I cranked up the volume, called her up and said "Hey mom, you gonna come over and break this copy too???" She thought it was funny.

What a great song for just ROCKIN OUT!!!!

  • @nealbfinn Great Story!! I had a simular one, but it was with my record of Stepenwolfs "Magic Carpet Ride"..I was rocking the neighborhood, parents gone, having a party, late at night, beer flowing.....the neighbor Mrs Brainard called the Cops!!!

Oh God, It was So fun Back then! Time Machine...Please.

  • is it true like the drummer had like 70 takes before he cud do it?

love the song and arthur lee

  • @eljako123 actually i heard the drummer couldnt play it and arthur had to sit down and play it himself! could be wrong...

  • gotta love love

  • A great one from the mid 60's. I played it to death.

  • Wow...some of the earliest punk.

  • You are so right!

  • this is so cool...

it rocks better then a lot of the songs fron that time..

    very overlookled!

creds for posting this great song!

  • Man this still kicks but after 40+ years!!!....RIP in Arthur Lee!!!....Still play this 3-4 times a week on Youtube!...And...YES, this is ROCK Music!!!

  • love the clangy guitar at the end great

  • this is rock music....

  • Love was the greatest American band of its era. Lee-Echols-MacLean -Forssi- Pfisterer and Stuart.

  • this makes me want to go out on roller skates and clothesline people...

  • first heard this in Washington DC in spring of 67...still great

  • "Trapped inside the night, but I'm a day" I swear thats the most inspirational line of lyrics in a song I've ever heard. Just hearing it puts on a smile on my face. So goddam righteous

  • "If I don't start crying it's because that I have got no eyes. My bible's in the fireplace and my dog lies hypnotised." Unbeatable lyrics.

  • Da Capo is an incredible album. The way the smooth Que Vida explodes into Seven and Seven is is pure genius. So much genre experimentation and an amazing package. I wish I lived in the 60s. So many news sounds were amusing. Now we're spent it seems. Music's fucking stagnant. More people should know and listen to Love

  • boobipbip YEAH!

  • Man, I love the breakdown at the ending. Would have love to have heard what a full song of the ending would have sounded like!

  • Amen to that ranchroper1974.I playe the whole strip circuit and even opened for these guys and the Music Machine. What a fun time and all the Boss Radio you could handle.OOPS!!I think someone kicked the Fender Reverb.lol

  • now THOSE were the days...Morrison at the Wiskey...sunset studios...oh oh oh...long gone days...

thank you Arthur Lee...for defining a generation..the ending guitar solo still kills me.

    ahhhh.

  • I was so pleased to hear this on Entourage, artists recognizing true Art. I came up listening to these guys, bought 6 of their LPs (all I could find) wanted to see 'em live nut apparently they didn't get to East Coast much, possibly too far from uhhh "contacts". However to set the record strait, The Doors used to go see Love at The Whiskey while on break cuz they wanted to be like them. Love first punk LP, first Psychedelic LP. Rave On!

  • Hahahaha...yeah!!!! Classic album...and yes, I do think it may be classified as one of the first "punk" LPs. I was introduced to Love by my wife's sister in the early '80's and have loved them ever since. Amazing!!!

  • what a great song! Heard it on closing credits of HBO's Entourage, heard the um bip bip part, remembered Alice Cooper had a song with that lyric, foudn the name & found this. 1967?! wow, powerful vocals, early punk...does this band have other good stuff? what is their best album? The bass in the beginning is so cool. Rippin for 67.

  • That was a great ending for that episode of Entourage!!! Love is truly a classic band with great songs. I am so glad someone has a clue and played this for the show. Great!

  • forever changes!!!!!

  • forever changes is probably their best album, da capo being second best

i have both on vinyl, the only way to listen to this band

records are pretty hard to find

  • Does this band have other good stuff? In L.A., in the Sixties, this WAS THE BAND.

  • one of my fave bands /albums of all time...peeps will cover coz they want to..dig your toes in acid sad while your locks get whooooosshed by the salty summa breeze of somewhere

  • I like The Ramones Version of it Better, but the original is awesome, so far ahead of it's time.

  • I'll say! This sort of speed in '66? And Dylan's the only other guy from the time who comes to my mind whose singing anticipates rap like this.

  • arthur lee is the best musician of all time!

  • it's from their second LP,"da Capo"

  • this song is from "da capo" (second LP)

  • This played on Entourage last night.

  • RePosted...What album is this from??

  • What album is this from?

  • The Ramones covered it on their Acid Eaters album too...

Arthur Lee was punk before punk existed...

  • This song is so far ahead of its time I don't know if we've caught up with it. Love could have been as big as the Doors, CCR, or anyone else if Arthur Lee would have toured. What a shame, because "Forever Changes" is rated #42 album of all time, but I'd say it's in the top ten. Buy it.

  • Got it! It reminds me of the summer of '66, when I was a wee tyke!

  • you took the words out my mouth! i think love are my favourite band! jim morrison idolised arthur lee! he is mesmerising! i think he was way ahead of his time!, even more so than even his soul brother hendrix! arthur lee sounds fresher!

  • The best comment on this page...

  • This would be a perfect song for Iggy Pop to sing.

  • this song + old drag strip footage = perfect!

  • An excellant example of just how progressive Love was..and Authur Lee of course! Cheers!

  • um bip bip yea

  • Oh man...I love this! I saw Love at the "Whisky A Go GO" in LA in 1966 and they rocked! It was a smokin' show! Cheers!

  • So sad. RIP Arthur.

  • What a filthy, stinking outro! It's fuckin gorgeous! Arthur Lee/Love rock forever!

  • I've had some favorite tunes I like to listen to but this surpasses just about everyhing. Incredebile then and now. Thanks to Sirius Satellite Radio/Little Stevens Underground Garage for bringing it to my attention.

  • Alice Cooper covered also and to this day he says he still has no idea what the heck it means and wished he had a change to ask Arthur Lee about the lyrics...blows my mind and I wanna rock every time I play it back

  • I love Love! Lol. I had the chance to see them a couple years ago before Christmas in LA. I must have been like 16 or 17. Fuckign awesome!

  • For more love try

    Lobelia Sound

  • yeeeeeeeeeeeee Goldfish

  • To: hlhelt. I am also obsessed with this song. It was in my mind since it was first on the airwaves. I will still be listening to this song for many years, now that I have found it again. I CAN'T GET IT OUT OF MY MIND.

  • Ditto- Arthur Lee was definitely ahead of his time. Great sound!!!

  • Count me in with you and hlhelt. Obsessed is almost too mild a word for it. Maybe a 2:16 religious experience?

  • I remember hearing this on the radio in 1966 (of course I was a mere lad) and saying "Holy Crap!!" Just brilliant, and one of the best records of the Sixties (or any other decade.)

  • I remember hearing this on the radio in 1966and going "Holy Shit!!" One of the great records of the Sixties. Just brilliant.

  • One of the BEST endings of any song ever!...Awesome Love song!...When this was released all I listened too was Arthur Lee/Love...&...Jimi Hendrix...Everyone knows their paths did cross!...RIP Arthur Lee!!!...PLAY...it...LOUD!!!

  • Best Love song ever!!!

  • I'm still obsessed with this song. I remember how different it sounded from the other songs being played on the radio at the time. 2:16 of rock genius!

  • Boo bip bip boo bip bip YEAH!

  • It doesn't get any better than this. No RIP for Arthur, he raged against the dying of the light!

  • You may check out the astonishing cover by Alice Cooper! :-)

  • Hey you current day groups out there. Do you ever listen to this and feel just a teensy bit inadequate? Well you should. Music as it should be - raw, powerful, exciting and quite, quite brilliant.

  • What a blast of a song!

10 years ahead of it´s time, but why hasn´t any renowned Punk Band ever covered this?!

  • The Ramones covered it on Their "Acid Eaters" album. It's fucking fantastic.

  • Who could possibly improve on this

    imposing stellar performance,

Just like Talk Talk from The Music Machine.

  • Ramones covered this. Alice Cooper as well

  • And, at a punk show in L.A. a couple of years ago The Weirdos encored with this.

  • Rush covered this a couple of years ago on their FLASHBACK EP.

  • One of the most amazing songs ever put on vinyl- still kicks ass!! RIP Arthur Lee & Maclean!

  • To all the punkers from the 70s and 80s, WHO'S YOUR DADDY? Arthur Lee owns your dirt too.

  • arthur lee is my favourite musician of all! blows my mind!, im just sad that a lot of people havent heard his magnificence! love your words by the way! you are ssssoooo rrriiiiiggggghhhhhttttttt!

  • 55racer....KFWB and KHJ...9th Street West..the Beamer (B Mitchell Reed)

  • Can't remember if we remembered this track or not but when aired recently by Randall Lee Rose on Big L Sky Channel 0190, it seemed familiar and reminiscent of another song that's so far eluded us but would be known by fans of this song. The first single release on Track records in 1968 by Eire Apparent "Follow Me" - any info apreciated. Thanks for this collage of images and great sound Surfrider.

  • Btw, anyone notice the resemblance between Arthur Lee and Englebert Humperdink at 1:56?

  • sheer bloody poetry.

  • Hendrix and Lee recorded themselves jamming together in a London studio.

When are those tapes gonna surface on YouTube?!

  • ...when KFWB & KHJ ruled the airwaves in Los Angeles...B. Mitchell Reed lives! :)

  • OMFG!!! THE BEEMER!!! you jump started a lot of lost brain cells!!! Worked on Hollywood Blvd - KFWB 98 studio was a few blocks away overlooking the Blvd - would go up and watch the audio magic - great music great folks a time long ago - Galaxy, Klidiscope, Plallidium, Sea Witch, Pandora's Box, Whiskey, the Trip, Garazzis, Canters . . . .

  • Awesome tricky song. LOVE forever!

  • fantastic job on this great song....thanks for taking the time and making the effort

  • Thank you and thanks to all making great comments here....some of which are great memories of times gone by that we knew were special, even back then.

  • f!@#$n love that tune :)

  • Thanks for this video! This song is timeless and Love was unique then and NOW! LmK ~.~

  • Arthur Lee and Love were a big influence on my personal hero, Syd Barrett. Very cool. Thanks for posting.

  • Two geniuses.

  • OMG. . I haven't heard this song in decades. Literally. But I certainly remember it. It was a part of that golden era of rock between '64 and '68. . some call the "Psychedelic Age". I love the energy. The way the guitars cut in and out. Powerful drumming and Arthur Lee's distinctive voice. This group should have been HUGE. Thanks for posting this.

  • Thank you for taking the time to check this out.

  • Trapped inside a night, but I'm a day!

  • The A-bomb explosion at the end of the song was taken from an actual Nevada test site.

Jim Morrison used to say that he hoped that the Doors would be "as big as Love," for they were so popular at the time.

  • ARTHUR SAID HE TAUGHT MORRISON TO SING

  • He taught Hendrix how to dress.

  • Jim Morrison sat in on several Love recording sessions.

  • Arthur introduced his label to Jim.

  • The original version begins with an explosion that is missing here (actually an airplane taking off). When this came out was judged the most powerful track ever. I agree.

  • The coolest band logo, ever. Loved Love. RIP, Arthur Lee.

  • I heard "7 & 7 is" on my transistor radio when it hit first hit the airwaves. No one knew who it was (like Hendrix and a million bands)as they played everything in any order that came out and in any serquence.

This track though, was very different and set a totally new sound. Way ahead of the pack and predated Hendrix and the great pysch bands. All Arthur's stuff that followed was great and way ahead. Brilliant Arthur. Steve Browne

  • Thank you for posting the Love music and albums.

    Perfect!!!

    Fulipped

  • sheer poetry....wonderful.

  • I dare, no I double-dare, anyone to tell me of a song that generates such power in these dark music days.

  • boop bip bip boop bip bip YEAH! Arthur Lee 1945-2006. Syd Barrett 1946-2006. Jimi Hendrix 1942-1970. All gone but never forgotten; they and their music are immortal.

  • why can i not rate?! *click 5 star's like 10 times* *crys*

  • i'm 53 years old and i just discovered arthur lee today! music is my hobby,i can't believe i wasn't familiar with arthur lee,i wouldn't haven't discovered bix beiderbecke either if it wasn't for pbs jazz special.thanks to youtube and the internet the world can discover anything especially quality musical artists.lenny kravitz, ramones, hendrix, etc, are ripoffs of arthur lee.he is the pioneer.

  • Love was somewhat of an underground band in the 60's. Arthur Lee was a genius, like Jimi Hendrix.

  • We used to crank this one up. My brother and I would go cruising and listen for our favorite songs and when they came on we would TURN THEM UP! Thanks for the memories. And yeah, I'm old....

  • Put me back in 1966 & keep me there!

  • man oh man do I agree with that statement.

  • Can I come too? What an exciting time that was.

  • Nice little tribute...got to see the late great Mr. Lee about 3 or 4 years here in NYC with a new Love--a young band of terrific musicians backing him up who played everything like it was '67 again--but not just note for note rote versions--it's a shame he's gone but the music...well, you know. Ars longa, vita brevis--if you flunked Latin you can look it up! Sadly I did not see what was prob'ly his last tour and show here with the horn section--stupid move on my part. RIP, A.L.

  • I guess to hear the good stuff you have to come here. There's nothing in the mainstream worth listing too.

  • Un-effin-believable! Truly Timeless!!!

  • oooooooo bip bip ooooo bip bip yaaaa!

  • this is 40 years old for chrissake but still knocks spots off current stuff. what the hell has happened to music?

  • love are my favourite group, trying to buy as much of their stuff as i can, they are timeless, you could listen to them in a 100 years and still be blown away!

  • Solid!

  • Excellent tune. The original and still the best... better than the 'Liquid Jesus' version!

  • Love was out of this world. Arthur Lee, maybe one of the best frontmen of all time. I miss him. I miss what he stood for. That he spent time in prison says too much about the wayward time law enforcement spends on drugs than crime.

  • Cool song. Songs like this bring me back to an era when things were simpler and better. For one, most city downtowns were thriving, for another you could walk around neighborhoods safely, for another teens and young adults went to nice places to socialize. I could go on but you get the idea.

  • Right on, man!

  • Precisely. To quote another man of the times . .John Kay from his epic "Monster". ."the cities have turned into jungles and corruption has spread throughout the land. .". You take your life in your own hands walking downtown at night in many of the US cities. A goddamn shame. I too miss the simpler days when people trusted each other more. .and respected the space. We've lost our way. Take me back with you. Beam me DOWN Scottie.

  • My old mid '60's band, The Differentials, used to do this then current song live. I had that drumming down, Jack! Love that Love. Miss you ALL !!!

  • if your bands recordings aren't already on the site "beyond the beat generation" they would love to have a copy on their playlist. online library for 60's garage n psych

  • Top band.RIP Arthur.

  • "It's The Beemer, B. Mitchell Reed on KFWB, Color Radio, with a little number from the band Love..."

  • this is good! (I have theyr elpee...)

  • Great Song by a musical genuis. Waaay ahead of the times back then. Never got the recognition that they deserved. RIP Arthur!

  • At San Francisco-Oakland during 1966 -67 there were weeks when 7 and 7 Is was played 2 - 3 times an hour on KYA, a local S.F. station. Great music, thank you for putting this up.

  • I was hip to Love as early as '66. They were big in LA where I was stationed at the time.

  • There was once an afternoon that a put my cd player on repeat and played it about 30 times .something you could'nt do with vinyl . great experience .

  • one of the best foot-to-the-floorboard songs, ever!

  • The odd thing about this song is that when it was released in 1966 it actually hit as high as #33 on the Billboard charts. That just goes to show that there was a strong public appetite for full-blown punk even at such an early date...and kind of makes you wonder why it took so much longer for the punk genre to really catch fire amongst performers.

  • Excellent synopsis, dtrent. Really hit #33? Not bad.

  • I would sit inside a bottle and pretend i was in a can. arthur you're crazy R.I.P

  • Thanks for making this, anyone have live of this vid?

  • this is what life is about. music like this. Lee.
