I don't understand some comments on here. It is not the interviewer's job to show sensitivity to her, it’s his job to ask the hard hitting questions that the world wants to know the answers to. The truth hurts, and I think his questions hit a serious nerve with Anna, who reacted very poorly. She could have just put a brave face on things for the two minute interview: instead she turned to her management(?) for help and acted like a spoiled brat. Very unprofessional of her.
This is a tough job of being an athlete. When you are performing poor your commitment to your work will be questioned. I really don't think the question was bad. SHe just needs to be a bit more professional and answer the question candidly.
I disagree, she came across reasonably well and the interviewer was a tad insensitive initially moving to flustered. She was an above average tennis player, aside from being top ten - we in the UK wd go into meltdown if we had a female player with a similar ranking- winning grand slam doubles takes talent and ability. All that aside, she appears to have grown in to an articulate woman of some substance.
Whether the question was ill-phrased or not, she showed no dignity or capacity for humour in her answer and comes off looking like a spoilt brat and very un-ladylike for my money. There's nothing wrong with the questions, she wants the journalist to gloss over her defeat.; if she's as smart as this video's title says she is, she could've taken his question & re-directed her answer to another topic, be refuting misconceptions for example. At the end of this ridiculous interview, Anna says that tommorow she will "practice and play doubles". I believe this the 2002 Wimby where she and Chanda Rubin reached the semis of doubles (losng to the Williams sisters), so she did play doubles quite well in this tournament. Well, she was always a great doubles player (and not a bad singles player, for that matter).
I wish she were still playing full time, but injuries have limited her to exhibitons and World Team Tennis. :(

The questions he asked were fair enough, and its generally up to the player to answer questions in a broad sense, not just answer with 10 words and leave it at that. Its not the BBC's fault she doesn't have the creative capacity to say more than a couple words per question.
BBC got exactly what they wanted. They send Garry Richardson, a man who knows nowt about tennis, to ask questions that are meant to provoke Anna into having a "tantrum". The BBC wanted to report that Anna is a pretty, moody bitch who can't play tennis and shouldn't be getting the hype that they themselves created. The questions reflect this view. Are you unconfident? Some of the questions were a little bit harsh but it doesn't change the fact that she's one of the most annoying and overrated tennis players...just anoher "princess".....She used to have a nice body ( which is all muscles and bones lately) but,I think,her face always looked like a potato...Anyway,she quit....Hopefully,other tennis players who don't take what they do seriously will learn from her story.

she stopped playing on the tour at the age of 21-22 so to say say she never won a singles title is a little cruel,ive said it before look at petrova & schiavone! mid 20s is when they won their first title! if anna had not had as many injuries her back injury ending her career then she would have won a singles title as she would have played regularly & would have gotten better.Nick bollitie said she was his favourite to coach cuz she so much talent it's a shame she didn't reach her full potential

There's nothing wrong with the questions, she wants the journalist to gloss over her defeat.; if she's as smart as this video's title says she is, she could've taken his question & re-directed her answer to another topic, be refuting misconceptions for example. Instead she turned what could be an insightful answer into a cringing interview session.
She should get of her high horse and accept the journalist has got a job to do, even if she sucked at hers!

At the end of this ridiculous interview, Anna says that tommorow she will "practice and play doubles". I believe this the 2002 Wimby where she and Chanda Rubin reached the semis of doubles (losng to the Williams sisters), so she did play doubles quite well in this tournament. Well, she was always a great doubles player (and not a bad singles player, for that matter).
I wish she were still playing full time, but injuries have limited her to exhibitons and World Team Tennis. :(

Gary Richardson was only asking the same questions he would ask anybody else. She just choose not to answer them in a very undignified manner.
Richardson should be praised for asking the questions people want to know the answer to - he is not part of the Kournikova media machine, he is an independent BBC broadcaster.

The questions he asked were fair enough, and its generally up to the player to answer questions in a broad sense, not just answer with 10 words and leave it at that. Its not the BBC's fault she doesn't have the creative capacity to say more than a couple words per question.

BBC got exactly what they wanted. They send Garry Richardson, a man who knows nowt about tennis, to ask questions that are meant to provoke Anna into having a "tantrum". The BBC wanted to report that Anna is a pretty, moody bitch who can't play tennis and shouldn't be getting the hype that they themselves created. The questions reflect this view. Are you unconfident? Should you play at a lower standard? You lost, how was your day?
