  • Thumbs up if you're watching this because the x-com pack is only 5 bucks on steam!

  • Still best video game ever made

  • best game for ever

  • the chrysalids gave me boners

  • Comment removed

  • My TV and PS controller took some domestic abuse in high school, and my foul mouth reached all ends of the house, all because of X-Com. Oh, but I could never leave X-Com if I wanted to.

  • you know its a classic wen you can go back to a game with terrible graphics and its still fucking awesome

  • It came out two years before I was born, my brother played it in the 2000's and just watching made it intense

  • I think they should release a remastered of this plus the original Syndicate games before the new ones are released.

  • Unfortunately, newer games are shallower and shallower =( even the "new" X-com game... fuck that game, an FPS X-com? =/ with probably no depth at all... fml.

  • probably my favorite game of all time..except for terror from the deep

  • I played it today on my PDA :D. It will never get boring to me.

  • Too scary for me

  • This is an old game but truley the best pc game ever,if you havent played this game your missing out,get it.

  • The very first thing I do is research the Heavy plasma and clip with your full team of scientists. You tough it out with the regular rifles until the research is complete. It's the only gun you'll ever need. Then move on to personal armor and power suits.

  • they are making an x-com FPS, its probably gonna suck balls compared to the originals

  • does anyone know where to get this game for free ??

  • Well for the first time of my life I tried X-Com.... cause it had some similiar system like in Jagged Alliance. Well what can I say made fun in the beginning... small Ufo shoot down and then comes the ground attack like this:

2 Aliens somewhere in the dark... keep killing all my guys with just one shoot and there is no way to kill them without loosing the 4/5 of the squad.. it's even impossible to hide somewhere =\ or to get near them somehow.... tried it many times. No cover, nothing! Help

  • @TheCabal Beginners mistake. I did night missions like that when I was kid. But there is a solution and it's called an electro flare. And then autoshot them to bits.

@ Everyone They are not making games like these becase there are not enought hardcore players. We are minority. The majority wants just what they are making of a new xcom. Also, computer games seems to be dying out, soon we'll get just conversions from console games.

  • @Bishop38f8 With the new xcom game coming out, it sure seems like you're right.

  • @TheCabal The game is HARD. You need to get a cannon tank out first to take the beggining flack. There are many small things you will discover that are sooo very helpful. Crouching and grenades help tremendously. research lasers and no more need to worry about ammo. Recruits are crazy expendable. it is normal for half the squad to die on the first mission. Missions will go better once you get alien tech. Manufacturing is where most your money will come from because nations will turn...

  • @TheCabal illuminate the battlefield with electro flares or auto shot - blaze with the auto cannon loaded with AC-IN if you have a spare heavy weapons guy (60+ F accuracy, 32+ strength) it will light up the field like a christmas tree.

  • OMG, I used to rename my X Com guys to my friends names and cried when they died. Truly epic. Why is there not a flash game or a Steam update for this???

  • @landogstube It is on steam, and it should work with the new OSs

  • @landogstube gog dot com has a download pre setup with dosbox for under $5 as far as i know

  • People need to remember what gaming was 'actually' like back in the 90's...

Sure there were some gems... Dungeon Keeper, Baldurs Gate, Torment, UFO etc etc... But people look through such nostalgia that they forget one simple fact...

Studio's were just as bad then as they are now... Possibly worse. For every gem, studio's were pumping out hundreds of absolutely god awful games every year...

As with today, lots of games are terrible, but this is why ones that aren't stand out so well.

  • @Grigeral Nostalgia goggles or not games like X-com stand out. One reason being it was really easy to design a game back then. Now probably half if not more of the budget goes for graphics/device comptablity/shader/engine modifing etc. People have less time to develop a concept and more risk so they go for the failproof FPS with graphics to make ends meet. Back then it was less risk free, more experimentation, more depth.

  • @scrap222666 Don't get me wrong, the gems from back in the day really are shining gems. But I think people fail to see todays gems for those same rose tinted glasses. They expect everything to be as it was when they were younger.

Doesn't work that way unfortunately. I've been playing Enemy Unknown not 5 minutes ago... I think with todays 'hand holding' in a lot of games, many kids these days would simply give up at it as it's so unforgiving. That's not condusive to making a profit though :(

  • Such a great game. I wish I had it to play right now!

  • I hate how any opportunity to heap deserved praise upon one of the greatest games ever is often turned into a chance to bash on all modern games, as if anyone could possibly paint such a broad array of modern gaming with a moronic and stereotypical brush. I've got no time for misplaced nostalgia and elitism; X-COM is great, admitting there are amazing games today doesn't diminish its quality.

  • I wonder why nobody makes a remake of this game, I mean a real remake, not the washed out streamline bullshit companies are making these days. Basically...a terror from the deep/UFO defense with a modern top of the line interface/graphics and design, but keep the exact game concepts and mechanics as they were. They'd make a fortune because god knows the real strategy fans out there are starved for better games.

  • @H0okemh0rns UFO Extraterrestrials is so far the only TRUE remake of this. Well, except for the fact that it is in the future and you are not on earth.

  • @H0okemh0rns Why does no one make remakes of it?

Main reason? The fan base is very, very small. If you ask a lot of people now what this game even is, they won't have a clue. Companies aren't likely to make games for a select few, there's little point if you don't make your money back.

And before people complain that studios suck because of it... Would you go to work and expect less pay because your work is more specialised? No... Thought not.

  • @Grigeral

Every new game that has ever existed started out with a small "select few".

The great games are great because word of mouth and that select few becomes many.

There is no reason they couldn't remake this game for a new generation and turn it into

the franchise it was in the 90's.

  • @stevekool19 They already are remaking it. It's called XCom on the 360 and PC. Granted it's not a 'remake' but it is a remake for the 'new generation'.

The new generation do not 'want' this type of game. They've shown this with the decrease of RTS games / strategies like Civilisation and the increase in FPS games. As such, they're remodelling XCom to what 'todays' generation of gamers want.

What you are after, is an updated carbon copy of UFO, which isn't going to happen.

  • @stevekool19 Also, another thing worth noting.

No, not all games start out with a small gathering. Companies do sure, but as their fame increases, so does hype, meaning many games have a huge following before it's even been released. The quality of the game is what keeps or loses this following, not creates it.

That and of course, you're forgetting one thing :). X-Com was released in 1995 and it's STILL a select following. If it hasn't grown by now, it's not going to in its old format.

  • @H0okemh0rns yea, old school games RULES, this is why kids that are hardcore gamers those days are smarter than today. 2 of 10 games of today mostly are trash!!!

  • @H0okemh0rns Search Xenonauts. Your saviour is coming!

  • @H0okemh0rns Just discovered Xenonauts. I am hopeful.

  • @H0okemh0rns I've thought the same thing. I would pay for that if it were priced as much as a new 360 release.

  • @H0okemh0rns They are making a remake! :D oh wait... It's an FPS... fuck.

  • @H0okemh0rns

UFO:Extraterrestrials, you can find it on Steam, its not an official sequel or remake, but it stays very true to the Xcom gameplay.

  • @H0okemh0rns Xenonauts, its coming out!

  • @H0okemh0rns You dont need a remake. The original is still the best. been playing it since 1994 and never get tired of its. so many ways to play

  • @musicduct graphical makeover would be good but only if NOTHING else is changed, nothing added and nothing taken away,

  • @urmo345 NO!!!!

  • @musicduct Seriously, it looks bad on modern LCD with high native resolution.

  • @H0okemh0rns Look up Xenonauts, bro.

  • @H0okemh0rns i would like online feature where you can actually form a team of humans to go against aliens,

  • @H0okemh0rns check steam for it, there's a company remaking it, with modern graphics and style, but from what i've seen so far keeping the theme and essence of the game intact.

that said i think UFO aftermath/aftershock/afterlight comes close (not perfectly so but close enough)

  • @H0okemh0rns

    lookup xenonauts..

    it look promising..

  • @H0okemh0rns Check out enemy unknown, hope remains!

  • @H0okemh0rns The're making a redux called "X-Com Enemy Unknown." But it's for consoles and PC and it is more of a shooter based tactical game. Comes out this Fall.

  • @H0okemh0rns Actually they made an unnoficial game based on Xcom called UFO extraterrestrials. I didnt liked it tough its too glitchy and graphics are not that good. Also tech tree is a mess. A remake of the classic Xcom in modern graphics would be awesome indeed.

  • @H0okemh0rns search for "ufo2000" on sourceforge

  • @H0okemh0rns if your still around look up xcom, Good News Awaits

  • ever since fags entered the gaming industry todays games have zero tragedy and hold your hand throughout a visual journey kind of like a disney land ride, occasionally allowing the game the chance to release a shower of meaningless particles against an AI that is little more than a stationary high texture prop. any variation from this model causes an onslaught of the 17 year old vocal minority to declare the game bad because "THE GRAPHICS ARE THE SUCK!!"

  • Been playing X-Com since 1995. Just played last night. Still fuckin awesome. All hail X-Com.

  • @x60mmx do you know were to get this game for free?? thanks

  • @Distrub122334 You could probably torrent it. I'd encourage you to purchase it but fuck 2k.

  • @x60mmx Agree

  • I own this game!! but wtf, its not in english! is on Francais, Detsuch?, and Crackwh.. i don't know x3

  • one of the best games everrrrrr!

  • Bring back Microprose- Master of Orion- Xcom 2 best series titles evah game makers keep ffin things up with "Their" vision of it. BS, they buy the rights to sell copies and movie deals.

  • greatest game ever created

  • I loved that game. The end was so pretty danged hard though. I dont remember ever winning the game.

  • X com defence looks like Ufo/X-com enemy unknown is it a remake or something because it looks exactly the same even the same tanks and soldies look the same...

  • @killer21334 I believe they had different names on different continents

  • @killer21334 enemy unknown is the euro version, ufo defense is the american version

  • its not scary when is it scary its must have more reallistic graphic and more drama -.- XD

  • @roblox184 wat? seriously i don't understand your post...

  • @roblox184 so youre about 12 years old? oh.

  • @roblox184 ah, you must value graphics over gameplay.

Pro tip: buy X-Com on steam. it only costs 5$. play it. play a night terror mission (snakemen preferably). tell me you aren't scared

  • X-COM is AWESOME! I agree it is freaky, and it's really annoying/sad when your teammates get blasted, especially when it's one who's been with you for 10+ missions. I just started playing again a few days ago, great game, used to play it when I was little.

Kind of funny though, I made my primary base Warsaw also! =P

  • I think the best part about this game is when you encounter new aliens and you would always get heavily beating. I'm especially refering to the ethereals and the chrissylids. (if that's how you spell it)

  • It really really was!

  • McDonalds is out of Ketchup!

  • why you all never notice xcom apoc? its a great game too!

its like xcom 2.0, its awesome.

Best three strategic games i ever played!

  • Best. Game. Ever.

  • Somebody HELP! I recently downloaded this game from steam to my pc but the graphics are worse than when I played it on the ps one! I'm gutted because I love this game. What can I do?

  • "The expert" ... LOL

  • they should put this into the reboot as an extra or at least re-release this on xbla/psn as a promo for the reboot

  • Probably the best video-game ever made. I play it to this day, even though I just got Starcraft 2...

  • @Nemesis5215 if not the best videogame, certainly the best strategy game.

  • The good news is they are doing a remake due for release in 2011. The bad news is that its a First person shooter thats name is the only thing the same as this old classic.

  • There's a new X-Com title being released. All I ask is that they re-release this game for play either on XBLA/PSN or as bonus content on the game disc itself.

  • I ran this on a 486DX66. It was a ridiculously good game for computers like that.

  • Best.Game.Ever.

  • @MBlueD lol beat me to it!

  • @helikestv

From the E3 demo it seems more like X-files than X-com... Maybe they made a mistake when purchasing the brand name? ;)

  • no its the bioshock 2 developers

  • i cannot believe i played this game, understood it and got far in it even though i was only 7 years old. i completely forgot about it until i tripped upon it on the internet today. im so happy i did!!! brings back good memories.

  • Too bad it is pretty much unplayable due to bugs.

  • @BarrySlisk Hmm, at least been able to play the Windows version just fine (the one with the loader named xcom1fix.exe). Occasional unexplainable crashes on my WinXP but they're so infrequent that saving often does the trick.

  • @apina667

I bought the steam version and there is a bug which causes me to not have any (or very few) weapons when starting my mission. And thats after 40 hours of playtime grrrr.

  • I heard the new X-Com is indeed a FPS - set in the 50's, with an outbreak of some kind of black ooze that you have to investigate detective style. Sounds like The X-Files / Dark Skies to me. Why not just remake the original as the new UFO series is weak.

  • lol! at description....yes it really freakin is

  • OMg i remember my brother playing this game,,,, and i accidently turned it off his unsaved file.. Lol...

Wow, like seriously. I use to be so confused about this game when he was playing on it..

  • I still get chills the first time I spot a Grey peering through a cornfield.

  • i spent at least 1000 hours playing this game since 96..........where is the new xcom!.......if you set up a base to manufacture medkits..you will be rich...they cost 17000 bucks less to build then what you can sell them for i seem to recall..ain played it in several years

  • this game was rereleased on steam, just fyi....

  • LMAO at the ADHD fags getting all excited about an X-Com where they don't have to use their brain.

  • @sam5345 fps X-COM will be a game that will be forgotten but ADHD people have a problem that's not their fault

  • This game is so sick, I remember playing it over 20 years ago and even though, i'm on a platform now, I still love this game. I just downloaded it for Vista. Just downloaded X-com apocalypse too.(havent got that to work yet though.) That was the best game I have ever played.

  • Xcom together with Dungeon Keeper were the two best games from when I was a kid. Still play Xcom regularly

  • Good thing this game is getting a sequel

  • an amazing game.

  • i liked renameing the troops with people i knew and that was how i seperated certain troops

  • i played ufo extraterrestrial, it doesn't come close to xcom quality

  • imo it was good, but something was just missing. I liked that there was a plenty more to research for, and that the combat ui was much cleverer.

  • "X-Com isn't meant to be scary"

    Wait, What?

He DOES know about the crhysalids, right?

  • The scary music in the battles and the soldiers' ability to panic is proof enough that this was meant to be scary! and it freakin was!

  • @mager56723 i know right, he obviosly hasnt met a snakeman or the phycic aliens, or the site of seeing a lil martian holding a blaster-launcher with a shell in it.....i lost alot of good men thinking they wernt crazy....D:

  • @mager56723 First ever Snakeman terror site. My team was dead off the ramp first turn. Goddamn Chrysalids...

  • does anyone out there know if a modern game like this is on the market?

  • There is UFO: Extraterrestrials on Steam that is supposed to be a spiritual successor to X-Com. I loved X-Com when I played it years ago, so I'm wondering if UFO:E is as good.

  • UFO: Alien Invasion comes to mind. It's still in beta mind you, and as yet un- winable.

  • I wish they still made this game. I would love a modern X-com like what Supreme Commander did for Total Annihilation.

  • i know what u mean just downloaded the original enemy unknown from steam a real 10/10 classic. it baffles me also why they havent carried on even in 2d!

  • yes mate even if they kept it in 2d it would still be the tops!

  • "the thing about Xcom is that it's a pretty old game but it's incredibly deep even by todays standars" - quote from video

EVEN by today's standards? You mean to say that there is any game out today that is even half as complex and deep as Xcom?Games have gotten more and more simple since back then.

  • See: Dwarf fortress

at least if not more, deep than X-Com.

    using ASCII.

  • @icetroll00 I belive he meant the amount of detail that goes into certian games today. None which are shooter games sadly. But games like civlization would be a good exzample for a compare. Other wise you are correct to say games are much simpler but the stories are more complex.

  • @icetroll00 Nonsense. Take off your rose-colored glasses and look past all the Call of Duty bullshit.

  • @Spitfirebird I really don't see as many AAA Games that are as deep as this.

  • @mager56723 Many games released in the last decade have been equally deep if not more so than X-COM.

In terms of story value we have games such as Bioshock and Uncharted.

Games like Civilization IV and Galactic Civilizations 2 offer great strategic experiences.

On the simulation front you can find Europa Universalis 3 and it's relatives (Victoria 2, EU: Rome, etc.).

  • @mager56723 And that's only considering the bigger games of those genres. There are an incredible amount of great games that achieved only marginal success.

I also don't think you realize that big&dumb AAA titles have almost always dominated the market; Doom and Halo, Quake and COD4, Quake 2 and MW2.

You need to look past that and see the gems of this generation; the games that live up to the legacy built by XCOM, Planescape and other great games.

  • i got all of them for 2 bucks, woot!!

  • Same here, lol. Same with Freedom Force.

  • I bought the collection on the steam sale this weekend, and I must say I agree with everyone on how great this game is.

I did not play it as a kid, so no nostalgia (except for the Adlib synthesizer chip .. and Contra 3 style animated intros), this is just a fantastic game. Some parts have not aged that well, the mouse based interface does not behave as in more recent games, and the game is ridiculously hard even on beginner setting, but I still love it.

  • I like how you can name your units.

  • @mygaffer

As i play it as a child it was scary, because like he said you never know who or what will shoot at you.

I was 14 or something, i still love the game, xcom apocalypse was good too but very diffrent, that is what i love on good old microprose, they dont do one and the same game, terror from the deep used the same engine, true but EVERYTHING was diffrent, the aliens, the weapons and stuff.

I realy miss them making good games, but they are no longer exist.

    But stupid devs. like ....

  • @rtv05 all 5 xcom games are 2 dollars this weekend on steam

  • $2 this weekend on Steam for the complete pack. Buy it.

  • "Really scary"? Nope. Really fun? Hell yes!

  • Yep blaster-lunchers, and flying suits, blow a hole in the top of the UFO and invade them, that shit is priceless

  • This game simply the most enjoyable game i have ever played in all aspects. spent hours playing this game well after i beat it..

  • there's a new version called UFO: Alien invasion

  • thats actually an open source game. Its not finished but it clearly gonna be great. Ne not official sequel Extra terrestrial but its meh...

  • Fuck WoW, I'm addicted to XCOM! A couple hours ago I pulled it back out and got sucked right back into it. Just researched the flying suits and blaster launchers!

  • Dude I know what you mean, the most addicted game ever if you can figure it out how to play and make money.

  • blaster launcher cinnamon buns!!!

  • definately "the" classic game. 1994 no less. X-Com is like a good old novel. Timeless.

  • and primus sucks

  • Im addicted too but the suck vista doesnt allow me to play it now.

I prey for reappearance on the DS.

  • Advance Wars is pretty close to X-com but nowhere near as deep when out of combat

  • wait, what? I have every AW game and none of them are as deep as X-Com.

    Or as hard as TFTD

    except the second AW

  • Ufo is the best game series ever

  • Yes! the Best!

  • Someone recreate this game using 2010's graphics. Please keep the game play.

  • @spiritsA yes, please. The new UFO games mainly just sucked.

  • @spiritsA 2K people that made bioshock are making it a first person shooter, not the same gameplay exactly

  • @spiritsA

its getting 2011 Graphics but its turning into a FPS like Fallout 3...

  • @spiritsA yeah, the creators of Bioshock is recreating this game.

  • @spiritsA actually they are but its gonna be a fps....

  • @spiritsA Well, they're remaking it,... but into an FPS.

  • @spiritsA UFO: Extraterrestrials

  • @spiritsA I WISH! Instead theyre making the new xcom straight up FPS...ughhh....horrible. HORRIBLE. We all want Xcoms original core to be recreated.

  • @EffigysPlays indeed. They could have released it under a different name with no link to X-com. I certainly wouldnt draw paralels from X-com to an alien fighting FPS set in the 50's. Now, even if the game is any good, the name it bears will mean it gets a negative reception.

  • @spiritsA the new will be an FPS with 50s style looks promising tho who knows :P

  • @spiritsA would be awesome, but lucky you there is a "spiritual successor" that is identical in just about every way, except with 2007 graphics. It's called "UFO Extraterrestrials" and the Gold edition (comes with a bunch of mods) is on Steam for $20. You will buy this now.

  • @spiritsA there is a new one coming so u dont have to wait too long

  • @redxangel50 The new one is NOT a strategy title. The only similarity it has is the title. Its an FPS >.>

A new X-com strategy game thats actually GOOD still remains a pipe dream.

  • @franconbean

There was a knockoff at one point called UFO: Aftermath that was actually fairly decent but still didn't hold a candle to the original X-COM games, unfortunately.
