  • Mrs. Betty you make some of the best looking food I have seen. When can you visit Texas and cook for me and my family, lol.

  • when i was little i thought hush puppies were sea creatures that mom fried up lol

  • Yes indeed Ms Betty, catfish, french fries, cole slaw, your hush puppies recipe, now that's good eating Ms. Betty! . :) I don't eat this fried food often, but I love it when I get to indulge! I like catfish prepared any type of way, so I will be looking through your recipe to see your baked cat fish as well. Thank you for these recipes. I don't thank you however for the 'torture' of me watching this mouthwatering food that I can't get to right away. :'(

  • Can you fry them in canola oil?

  • @TheBlueMeadow Yes, canola oil is fine.

    --Betty :)

  • Betty, Keep up the great work you do. It is really appreciated. You make the thing people like and give us a easy way to do it. You are down to earth person. Very caring person. Thanks and Good Luck...

  • @softgeema07 Thanks for your sweet comment! I really appreciate it!

  • Betty, come to Pennsylvannia!!

  • @idunnoproductionzz I would love to visit Pennsylvania!

    --Betty :)

  • Thanks for the pearl of wisdom about the potatoes being a kind of a freshening agent for the oil, you do indeed learn something new everyday...greetings from Vancouver, Canada!

  • @wedgenstein Thanks for your lovely comment! I appreciate it!

    Best Wishes from Kentucky,

    --Betty :)

  • They have these gadgets for felafel restaurants which are like mini-ice cream scoopers which would be perfect for hush puppies? Want me to send you one, hon?

  • @yawvous They sound perfect for hush puppies! I will look for one! Thanks for the tip!

    --Betty :)

  • Great skills Betty- Isn't hushpuppies made traditionally with oil from frying fish?

  • @yawvous It's not made that way where I'm from, but that would not be a bad idea...I'm sure some people do that! Thanks for the nice comment!

    --Betty :)

  • Would it be ok if I use self rising Flour, instead of Corn Meal? The only reason is that I'd rather not go to the grocery again after i've just came back....

  • @N1njaSalad For hush puppies you must have cornmeal of some kind. You would not enjoy them if they were made with flour instead.

    --Betty :)

  • Can I use masa instead of corn meal?

  • @Shorigun No, masa is thinner and has a sand like texture, its consistency in a batter like this is different then cornmeal.(which is thicker and can hold liquid without getting iquidy.) The taste is different like freshly made corn tortillas.

  • I just ate one from my local ribs place and it was good.

Not as good as the ones in North Carolina!

  • @SoCalAirs0ft Hush puppies are good with ribs!

    --Betty :)

  • Why are mine always raw in center!!!! -:(

  • @drksole666 If you cook them at a very high heat, they will brown on the outside before getting done inside. Try lowering the temperature a bit.

    --Betty :)

  • looks good

  • thanks ms betty!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What state are you in?

  • @kefer123622 I'm in Kentucky.

    --Betty :)

  • I never knew that there was such thing as self- rising anything. Thanks for the cooking update! also the hush puppies turned out great. :D

  • @Auslander999 I don't use the vegetables that you mentioned--but you could. I prefer peanut oil for deep frying, but that is just a matter of preference.

  • @Dudeifwhat I am glad you found the recipe you needed! I hope you enjoy it!

    --Betty :)

  • Thanks Betty. I also add garlic powder and chopped jalepenos from a jar to add a bit of extra flavor. I like how you left your batter thick I usually thin mine too much, will be trying it out this weekend. Thanks again.

  • @MrShorty64 Thanks for your nice comment! I love your ideas of adding garlic powder and chopped jalapenos! The thick batter does work very well. I hope your hush puppies came out great!

    --Betty :)

  • @bettyskitchen Hi Betty My hushpuppies turned out great Thanks for your tips. I also tried a new trick I bought a smaller ice crream scooper about and inch and a half wide , that made a more rounder puppy and also kept my hands away from the hot grease it also made it faster and cleaner.

    Chris

  • @MrShorty64 That is a great idea! Thanks for sharing!

    --Betty :)

  • Thanks for showing me what hush puppies are. I am from the UK

  • Hush puppies are wonderful! If you can find cornmeal, you will be able to make them. Thanks for your nice comment!

    --Betty :)

  • I'm a Betty fan!!!! Love your videos!

  • Thanks for your sweet comment!

    --Betty :)

  • Betty, I love your cooking. You really do need your own cooking show, or a cookbook at least;-)

Thanks for being a gem and maybe one day you can do a video on preparing steak? I know it seems simple and I think I'm OK at it but I really want to perfect my craft, ya know!

  • Thanks for your sweet comment! I just came out with a cookbook that you can find at lulu (dot) com. I have done a few steaks on bettyskitchen. My favorite is the Peppercorn Steak with bourbon Sauce.

    --Betty :)

  • Heya!

I help my family cook all the time and most are set in their ways and being the young one not many reciepes get changed by me XD.

I followed your recipe except, being myself at 15, I had to add something, minced jalopeneos :) I hope i spelled that right.

They are fantastic, I even had my grandma ask for the recipe haha. Thanks alot betty.

  • That's great! Thanks for letting me know!

    --Betty :)

  • That's great! And I think the jalapenos are a wonderful addition! Thanks for commenting!

    --Betty :)

  • Is that a picture of your backyard in the beginning?! <3

  • Yes, there just happened to be a rainbow there when I started the video, and I couldn't resist sharing it!

    --Betty :)

  • It's so so beautiful! Wow

  • Thanks!

    --Betty :)

  • Thanks for this one Betty! I've been buying the boxed mix b/c I had no idea what the ingredients were. I'm gonna give this a try. I love hush puppies!

Would there be a problem using 2% milk? Thats what I usually have on hand.

  • There is no problem using 2% milk. The hush puppies should turn out great! I hope you like them! Thanks for your question!

    --Betty :)

  • how can i get over a fear of not making things like this from scratch? i fear nobody will like it and it will be a waste :( i loved it :)

  • The more you make things from scratch, the more comfortable you will become! Also, if you follow the instructions carefully, your recipes will come out great, and you will look forward to your next success! Hang in there, Ben!

    --Betty :)

  • I love hushpuppies, but I never made them. I need to buy a deep fryer! You are brave to be doing all this deep frying while wearing such a beautiful top:) I will be trying this in the future, Thanks Betty!

  • You're welcome! Thanks for your lovely comment!

    --Betty :)

  • I used to live in the south when I was a kid and your recipes bring back lots of nice memories. Just wanted to ask, what temperature should the oil be at to fry these?

  • The temperature of the oil should be from 345 to 375 degrees (Fahrenheit). Be sure you don't let it get hot enough to smoke (oil begins to burn at 400 degrees), but it must be heated hot enough to cook your food quickly. I hope this helps!

    --Betty :)

  • hush puppies are my fav.. love it !! thank's for sharing :-D

  • You're welcome! I hope you enjoy the recipe!

    --Betty :)

  • I loooove hush puppies and never knew they would be so easy to make! They look so delicious! Thanks a bunch =)

  • Well, if I make it for bettyskitchen, it's usually pretty easy. I've posted a few things that are a bit of work, but I don't want to post a lot of things people will never try! The hush puppies are very easy, and they taste better than the frozen type that you can microwave! I hope you can use the recipe!

    --Betty :)

  • Love your videos!! Thanks for your recipes!

  • Thank you! You are certainly welcome for the recipes! I appreciate your feedback!

    --Betty :)

  • I love hush puppies I am going to get the stuff to make them thank you for sharing this great dish

  • You are very welcome! They are easy to make--and so much better than the frozen ones you can get and microwave! Thanks for viewing (and trying!)

    --Betty :)

  • any thing that is homemade is better then what you can get in a store I think. I can't believe how easy they are to make.

  • Thanks for posting,,,I never knew how to make them from scratch. I just bought some frozen ones at the store. So now I dont have to do that anymore..I can just make them from scratch! ~Thank you :)

  • I think you will like these, Mera! I don't usually do much deep-frying, but since I was making a full Southern catfish dinner, hush puppies were the obvious "bread" choice! And, I think they are popular with most people. Thanks for your sweet comment! Have a nice day!

    With warm wishes,

    --Betty :)
