@6402680 In 71? Their only real competition would have been Andy Powell and Ted Turner of Wishbone Ash, Duane Allman and Dickey Betts of The Allman Brothers, and Duane Allman and Eric Clapton.
@6402680 Oh certainly I agree. The only thing I have heard from all those I mentioned from the same era to come near this is the version of Sympathy For The Devil from Get Yer Ya Ya's Out.
I have always noticed a real sense of urgency in this song. I dont think this was a battle. I think it was a journey or the anticipation of going somewhere.
this album is INSANE!!! to reply to this comment, i am 18 and my dad was the one who first introduced me to santana at the tender age of 4 and i have never been so thankful for something before :D
@bolijack Yeah, or like when they say " He / She's a "cuero" meaning they are HOT!!.... In this case though since there is a bongo/conga solo I associate it with the the skins on the percussive drums.......although who knows what the composer REALLY had in mind :-/
At the beginning I thought, slightly more than 14. 799 calls to this video would be a big offence for the great carlos and his brilliant Latino Rock, but looking at the rubbish and million calls to the videos produced by some "artists", I can only say, that the good music is only reserved for those who really know what good cultmusic is. Man, what an infintie Gutiarr. Viva Santana!!
This is the Santana Band at their (and Carlos') apex. The power and seamless synchronization of the 3 percussionists (Shrieve, Areas and Carabello) is amazing as are Carlos' and "2nd" guitarist Schon's fiery solo trade-offs at the end. Organist Rolie and bassist Brown are in support mode.
Listen to this track on headphones to also hear engineer Glen Kolotkin's brilliant mixing and placement of instruments to appreciate his contribution on making this the powerhouse song that it is.
No doubt that as far as all the Santana albums this is definitely the favorite and most listened to. When this was released in the day...it ruled!!! This crossed over into every New York City neigborhood. White, black, latino all were jammin' to Santana "3".
Muchos recuerdos .teniamos un tocadiscos portatil de bateria,y nos ibamos al mercado cuando lo estaban construyendo a escuchar este long ply este fue de mis favoritos gracias por subirlo
My brother would let me ride with him to go surfing in his olds98 back in the'70s, and he'd have Santana blasting away on an 8 track.I'd be holding on for dear life because he would be gettin' pumped for the surf session and just rippin' to the beach at warp speeds.Great song, great times.Thanx for the post K65!!
Tissuesan: The percussion rhythm is based on a Guaguanco Rumba beat. Best I can describe this guitar playing is that Neal can make the guitar scream but Carlos makes it cry. Great tune!
@tissuesan To me it sounds like Huaguanco/Fast Mambo with a light dose of Rock and a sprinkle of Fusion. Carlos has a chain of restaurants around the San Francisco Bay area Called MARIA MARIA and his food reflects his music. Traditional Mexican Cusine morphed with American, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Carribean influences that dance on your taste buds and delight your pallette.....very much like his music.
The very best example of Carlos Santana and Neal Schon in a Solo Battle Royal and it was even better live....they stretced it out to about 8 minutes...good stuff
As it's told, Neal and Carlos kept overdubbing to try and outdo each other but according to recording engineer Glen Kolotkin, Neal inadvertently erased over one of his better contributions.
Have always liked the subtle wha effect Neal always used to get that perfect tone. Knew when to open and "mute" the pedal perfectly! And you gotta' love that guitar scream he does at 5:03!
Its my favourite Santana album together with Caravanserai, Welcome and Borboletta But seriously folks (hey Joe!) Carlos and Neal: that's how to play guitar.
Was there two lead guitar combo hotter than Neal and Carlos at this point in time?

TRANSLATION "Los cueros.... me llaman"
The rawhides (Bongo,Conga skins) ....are calling out to me
EVERYBODY!......EVERYBODY! "Vamonos Negra a bailar mi Huaguanco"
Lets go black girl....... to dance my Huaguanco (A latin dance)
Hat's off to Neaol Schon who was still a kid when he played on this album and blew everyone's mind.
