Sally, if you can read this, I'm very sorry - but the only thing I could do was walk away in silence. I love you, and always will, and I'm deeply, truly sorry.
One aspect I don't like about this video is the negative/positive symbols on the little hooded figures. I think their colour alone does an adequate job, insofar as it shows them as opposite to each other. And we know their opposite when they leave in their groups of colour, off the left and right sides of the screen. I am not sure that the plus and minus signs are needed; they're too literal. Does anyone have any views on them? (I love the rest of the video, it's very powerful.)
@ilikedrums55 its all about the duality of life eg depression and happiness theres duality in nearly everything except bliss, apparently has no opposite (enlightenment) atleast thats what i think this visdeo is about
@ilikedrums55 I don't know that much about Joy Division--just at the point of exploring them on youtube--but I feel those symbols fit in with the time and the general mood of their music (and other bands--Talking Heads come to mind). kind of ironically rigid (like his dancing). could even be seen as a comment on the neo-fascism going around at that time (labels, badges) . I could be completely off. I don't know about joy divisions (a)politics. It's just that I just saw 24-Hour Party People....
I know it will sound cliché to most but I dedicate this song to someone who remains an important part of my life but decided I´m no longer part of hers and decided to walk away...in silence.
beautiful song, it's pining for a better world but resigned makes me want to clap my hands to wake up and move forward before I succumb to a beautiful sleep of hopelessness.....a beautiful hopelessness

of course it was going to end in suicide he had epilepsy remember? He wasnt in control they were ;) Great music though, such a short life i guess. But he made history and he will live on in history.
@GabiSeth I agree with my g*y lover earlier that this track makes c u m fall out of from the back of my arse. It’s eerie and I should shut the f*ck up and just listen to the song without trying too hard by listing loads of words that don’t make me sound interesting. Isolation, Confusion, f*ck off. I'm pretty sure Ian Curtis really liked retarded pseudo-psychologists twatting on about his feelings.
I love this song so much. It's prophetic nature is scary. I'm always curious what was really going on in his head, the boy could seriously write. But call me what you want, the little people(right out of Spaceballs-little dinks...are stupid.
healt Kirchart's part in Emerica Stay Gold ( skateboard video ) almost mad me cry because of this song.... so sad ! Anyway can someone tell me if healt kirchart as quit skating? because this is like a part that resume is whole career.
@islandofskateboard When they say "retire" that probably just means he wont have major parts in videos anymore. Im sure he will still skate for fun or show up in videos, dont worry. No skateboarder who ever really loves the sport could ever just quit it...i dont think i could..
Usually I like to know what lyrics mean, but with Joy Division i'm happy with the ambiguity. I don't want to know exactly what Ian Curtis is saying. To me, it matters what I take from them.
this track always talked to me about the dangers of our society not to talk about mental illness Ian was the most amazing of us but he fell dont let it happen to yours
Unhappy Birthday today, -since he decided to walk in silence...! His confusion is my illusion to go back in time and replace the darkness with no danger at all ...Missing everything...!
This video is very symbolic to life and the grip evil has had over humanity as we know it, the tall cone being humanity and the two sets of good an evil.
Eventually evil drops humanity freeing it from its shackles, I only wish Ian could be with us in 2012 but I am sure he is doing work behind the scenes to insure humanity will prevail.
Crazy, well allot of people called Ian Curtis crazy as well as Kurt Cobain and Jim Morrison, on this basis we shall all agree that crazy is a good thing!
@dmcd808 honestly dude? Do you really believe anything is going to happen in 2012? Just because the Mayan Calender predicted it? The Mayans believed they had to sacrifice a person each morning to make sure the sun (their god) would come up. The Mayans have stopped sacrificing people for almost more than 2000 years now and the sun is still coming up each day. Maybe you should sacrifice yourself in 2011 just to make sure and to make my day.

he had a tragic life my dear, an addiction, a medical condition which caused him seizures, torn between a wife and a french mistress who he couldnt give up though he loved his wife. he wanted to leave JD , it was all getting too big for him,but was not allowed he felt his life was out of control and not his own anymore. he hung himself in his kitchen after his wife walked out telling him she wanted a divorce which he didnt want. tragic for one so young and brilliant so now you know.
I'm sorry, but I don't buy into the victimhood schtick-- our lives are own creation, and at some point one must take responsibility for their choices. His wife wanted a divorce b/c he had a mistress; that's a pretty good reason in my book. His inability to make a choice between them and the fallout that resulted is HIS responsibility and no one else's. This isn't to say that his or any suicide is not a loss, but c'mon.

this song seems to come from so far away doesn't it?
It has a very 'spacial" feeling, do you agree?
there's a band from the 80s, very big in Brazil, that has a few songs like JD, even the singing... one of those is "Tempo Perdido" , also one of their greates hits. "Angra dos Reis" too is a hit that reminds me of JD somehow (the band is "Legião urbana", "Urban Legion").
check it out here on youtube (they won't let you post a link in here)
@krisisH96 i know what you mean, theres great beauty to be found in sadness. Afterall it's thew impermancence of life that makes it so magnifecent and I wish you the best in yours.
just finished his biography today, it was great just reading his lyrics and just knowing that he meant every word he wrote. I find it saddening that he felt it was worst to be alive than it was to be dead. ian curtis RIP Legend

@81chinesedragon I'm sorry, but I don't buy into the victimhood schtick-- our lives are own creation, and at some point one must take responsibility for their choices. His wife wanted a divorce b/c he had a mistress; that's a pretty good reason in my book. His inability to make a choice between them and the fallout that resulted is HIS responsibility and no one else's. This isn't to say that his or any suicide is not a loss, but c'mon.

We need Joy Division Atmosphere with lyrics. There are no songs on Youtube with the lyrics...

this song seems to come from so far away doesn't it?

Such a strikingly talented musician gone at such a young age. I think this is my favorite Joy Division song.
