Popstars in the 80s had it tough, no auto tune or pitch correction, these people had to be able to sing, I know that is strange for people under the age of 35, But honestly it was true, how they sang, was what was let loose on the public.

Ive heard Carol sing this live and she is incredible. Amazing singer. All this picking out bum notes is laughable. You could do that with any song if you were sad enough! Gary was just rude. He'd be crushed if somebody did that to him!
I don't think people understand the difference betwen "out of tune" and "dissonant tonality", it's probably because they don't know music. This song is brilliant, and you can take your Kanye West autotune vocoder bollocks with no feeling and get to f***.
You can like this record or not. That's all perfectly fine. Obviously a lot of people did and do like it.
Equally, I like Alison Statton's singing with Young Marble Giants, and her tuning is certainly a bit dodgy.
What you CAN'T do is say this record is in tune because it isn't. This isn't a matter of opinion. There's no debate to be had here. It is NOT in tune. It is SO not in tune. For me, it's cringingly out of tune.
But if you like it anyway – fair enough. No worries.

We've had five years of music which creates an interest ( as Lady Gaga defined her style of pop), its time to give space to themes and ballads - but only original songs like this, and not ones that are too jar- of- heartsy- sentimental.

These were the days when autotune didn't exist and singers just made songs that people would enjoy to listen to, not songs that were note for note perfect. Gary's comment wasn't necessary and has damaged her reputation.
The note at 1.36 is a high E flat (Eb5). I dont care that its flat though, she has such a great power to her voice. There's a hint of Cyndi Lauper in there too!
I think it's down to a musical miscalculation that made the 1:36 note sound flat. If you listen to the beat, you'll hear it came in early which made her voice sound flat, but it should have been delayed with a longer pause and came in when she changed key. Sometimes a person sings a long note but the chord changes or a beat thrown in when the singer hadn't chnaged key makes it sound like the vocal had changed too but it hasn't. Still a great song though.
To all these comments having a go at Gary Barlow; I don't care how bad Take That were, nobody is defending their music. I agree that the musical style of T-Pau would be better than Take That if only Decker could sing in tune. If you forget how bad Take That's songs are, Barlow has undeniably better pitch than Decker. I'm not talking about heart and soul, I'm talking purely about the ability to sing in tune. He's not pitch perfect but has a better control over pitch than Carol Decker. End of.
This is a great song!! Gary "tone-deaf" Barlow is such an arse for insulting her pitching. This isnt my usual style of music, Im more into 70's soul music, but this was quite refreshing to listen to, and sooooo unique. LOL Im only 18.
Thing is, the Karaoke people that show chews up and spits out every year should really know that they'll probably be dropped in a flash once people realise that all of their songs are just rehashes of ones they liked better the first time around. It's just one long ego trip for the poor deluded entrants and the vile people who sit there alternately feeding and destroying that delusion, pretending that having been in N-Dubz or Take That means you know what you're talking about.
It is not out of tune, it is in fact exactly in tune with the music. You might as well argue that the sax is out of tune. If you want crap vocal tone, go comment on the Cheryl Cole videos. What you find is that if a note from a song does not fit what their pop-riddled psyche, then they hear it as sharp or flat. You'd get the same comments if it were a La Roux song being discussed (another singer dissed just for singing differently). Barlow wasn't even the second best singer in Take That to boot.
This is not out of tune and never was. I liked this song back in the day - and is way better than any of the generic shite that Barlow and Take That released.
Oh - and listen to Gary 'trying to be cool but really sounds like an ancient old fart' Barlow trying to sing 'A Million Love Songs' - now that is how to record a song that not even auto-tune can fix.

Whether it detracts from the performance is down to your personal taste but the fact remains, the notes are flat and it is painful to my ears.

It's all completely subjective how good the vocals are for this track. Would you comment on every brush stroke an artist used for a painting or would you evaluate the final piece for it's beauty? Singing in tune is VASTLY overrated - singing with emotion is far more exciting to listen to. Mariah Carey can sing in perfect tune, yet she sounds hideous and clinical. Carol Decker is just *singing*, she isn't trying to make a scientifically good record. And for that I am glad.

I don't think people understand the difference betwen "out of tune" and "dissonant tonality", it's probably because they don't know music. This song is brilliant, and you can take your Kanye West autotune vocoder bollocks with no feeling and get to f***.

You can like this record or not. That's all perfectly fine. Obviously a lot of people did and do like it.
Equally, I like Alison Statton's singing with Young Marble Giants, and her tuning is certainly a bit dodgy.
What you CAN'T do is say this record is in tune because it isn't. This isn't a matter of opinion. There's no debate to be had here. It is NOT in tune. It is SO not in tune. For me, it's cringingly out of tune.
But if you like it anyway – fair enough. No worries.

It does sound a bit flat at times!!! But who ever liked a rock song for it being note perfect? (An 80's one at that?) I like tons of music that isn't technically perfect, but it's still great music to me.

We're so used to dense, re-worked arrangements, with complex backgrounds, and what Cheryl Cole calls shower beats etc, etc, that's it's instructive to experience music powered by feeling. We've had five years of music which creates an interest ( as Lady Gaga defined her style of pop), its time to give space to themes and ballads - but only original songs like this, and not ones that are too jar- of- heartsy- sentimental.

These were the days when autotune didn't exist and singers just made songs that people would enjoy to listen to, not songs that were note for note perfect. Gary's comment wasn't necessary and has damaged her reputation.

The note at 1.36 is a high E flat (Eb5). I dont care that its flat though, she has such a great power to her voice. There's a hint of Cyndi Lauper in there too!

I think it's down to a musical miscalculation that made the 1:36 note sound flat. If you listen to the beat, you'll hear it came in early which made her voice sound flat, but it should have been delayed with a longer pause and came in when she changed key. Sometimes a person sings a long note but the chord changes or a beat thrown in when the singer hadn't chnaged key makes it sound like the vocal had changed too but it hasn't. Still a great song though.

To all these comments having a go at Gary Barlow; I don't care how bad Take That were, nobody is defending their music. I agree that the musical style of T-Pau would be better than Take That if only Decker could sing in tune. If you forget how bad Take That's songs are, Barlow has undeniably better pitch than Decker. I'm not talking about heart and soul, I'm talking purely about the ability to sing in tune. He's not pitch perfect but has a better control over pitch than Carol Decker. End of.

Thing is, the Karaoke people that show chews up and spits out every year should really know that they'll probably be dropped in a flash once people realise that all of their songs are just rehashes of ones they liked better the first time around. It's just one long ego trip for the poor deluded entrants and the vile people who sit there alternately feeding and destroying that delusion, pretending that having been in N-Dubz or Take That means you know what you're talking about.

It is not out of tune, it is in fact exactly in tune with the music. You might as well argue that the sax is out of tune. If you want crap vocal tone, go comment on the Cheryl Cole videos. What you find is that if a note from a song does not fit what their pop-riddled psyche, then they hear it as sharp or flat. You'd get the same comments if it were a La Roux song being discussed (another singer dissed just for singing differently). Barlow wasn't even the second best singer in Take That to boot.

This is not out of tune and never was. I liked this song back in the day - and is way better than any of the generic shite that Barlow and Take That released.
Oh - and listen to Gary 'trying to be cool but really sounds like an ancient old fart' Barlow trying to sing 'A Million Love Songs' - now that is how to record a song that not even auto-tune can fix.

@1madnut Yes I was around in the 80s (and the 60s and the 70s;-)) Like many I was curious about Gary's comment and merely listened to see for myself. He's right, there are many flat notes. Whether it detracts from the performance is down to your personal taste but the fact remains, the notes are flat and it is painful to my ears.

Ah, China in Your Hand! – this brings back memories. For years, whenever anyone asks for lists of the "worst song ever", I've always suggested this one, because it's SO out of tune and yet Carol Decker belts it out with such gusto. And now Gary Barlow is in trouble for actually saying so. Very entertaining!

So there is no way you could like Fairytale of New York as it is so out of tune, but it is one of the best records for summing up a time..same with this song, it captures the 80's

It's all completely subjective how good the vocals are for this track. Would you comment on every brush stroke an artist used for a painting or would you evaluate the final piece for it's beauty? Singing in tune is VASTLY overrated - singing with emotion is far more exciting to listen to. Mariah Carey can sing in perfect tune, yet she sounds hideous and clinical. Carol Decker is just *singing*, she isn't trying to make a scientifically good record. And for that I am glad.
