This is wonderful, I'd rather learn a song from you than anyone else I've ever seen. Your manner is so friendly and informative.
I also have a suggestion about the progression in the Major part. I'm fairly certain the third chord of the sequence is not a repetition of -0222-. To my ear it's either -0225- or -02220 or -02250. Also, I believe the fourth is -04232. I hear sort of a rising theme across the 4 chords, rather than an A/B/A/C sequence. Do you hear it?
@sierraskywatcher I've seen it tabbed as X0222X, X0342X, X0222X, X0324X but that doesn't sound right to me. I've been playing X0222X, X0223X, X0222X, X0423X which is almost the same as the video but playing the fourth fret on the D string on the last chord. To my (not very good) ear that sounds better but I would like to know what Nick Drake actually played.
Thanks a lot for the tutorial though I'm completely lost at what's going on after the A chords on part 3 ... I'll watch the video again and again but may be some kind of little still frame somewhere (or even text in the comments) with the various chords played would be very helpful to not very skilled players like me. :-P
And thanks a lot for your smiles too, they made my day ! :-)
In fact, try -0403- which produces a nice openness very much in character with the arrangement. This form also shows up a lot in blues progressions, both American and English, as a richer departure from the suspended root. It's more like the beginning of a chord scale. I'm sure that Nick would have automatically reached for it as part of his toolkit, and it sounds to my ear like that's what he recorded.
Thank you for this. I love this song but I've not tried to play it until I chanced upon your tutorial. So, my grasp of it is very preliminary, but I have some thoughts about the bridge that might be worth exploring. Your fingering (which I gather you've taken from the tab book) calls at about 7:30 for a movement roughly like -0222- -0223- 0222 -0323- around the first chord form. It's the last of these that bothers me. That makes Aaug5sus4, or F6. Gotta be wrong. Try one semitone higher!
Thank you so much for the tutorial! You did a very good job at teaching this. I've picked it up fairly quickly so thank you for the time you took to make these videos.
Thank you x
