That's exactly what I did two years ago. You'll find updates about how I combined them and how many double dragons I snipped in some of most recent videos. :-)
Hi Nappsoul! Oh it's so good to hear from you. :-) It's been an interesting journey since my loose napp days, but I wouldn't change it for anything. Thanks for the compliment!
Very informative video. I have a question though. Let's say when doing the 4pt interlocking method I cant complete the full rotation. So, when I come back 2 months later to tighten, will I create a gap because I don't which direction I left off? Hope this question makes sense. Thanks.
This message perfectly makes sense and it's a great one. If you can remember where you left off then that would be great, but there is a slight chance that a gap might be created if you insert through the same hole from which you left off. Sometimes when I can't remember I just make sure to start my rotation in a new direction. I always make it a point to start my latch at the same point and end my rotation at a different point, that way i'll know where I left off. If not then it's okay. :-)
okay i'm nervous now. I saw ur other video and followed along. I went toward 12, then 3, then 6, then 9. I see this vid now, did I do it wrong? I got the tight little cord at the root when I was done. pls respond, 1st time interlocking my own hair. Could you tell the diff in loc appearance versus 3pt/4pt- on some of my locs I couldn't complete the full rotation.
You did it correctly. :-) the 4pt. creates a tighter lock and a 3 pt. creates a fuller lock. You may or may not see a difference in your loc's appearance, but each head is different. No worries if you can't complete a full rotation because it just means that you may not have a enough new growth to complete one. Wait at least 5 weeks or so to have enough new growth to complete a rotation. Based on how much growth I have determines whether or not I can finish one rotation.
It's N-E-S or 12-3-6. You can go an any direction just as long as you keep that 3 pt. rotation i.e. E-S-W or S-W-N, make sense? I'm more than happy to help you out. :-)
I've seen some people do this wrong.. I think they only do 1 point rotation. Will it make them look lumpy or anything or does the 4 point make it look smooth?
I've seen some where it looks like it's two dreads growing froom the roots into one smaller one... (I've only seen it with straight blonde hair)
From what I understand, 1 point rotation (inserting the tool in the same direction) will create a big hole in your loc. The 4 pt. creates a tighter, cylindrical loc.
I hate tightening my locs but your tool seems easier to use than the one I have. Please email me the info to order the tool. Thanks! nej1010@comcast.net
Great to know...I wanted to see someone who has been latching for a long time to see the shape of their locs. Yours are beautiful! So even though you may latch to the root, the loc will still get slightly puffy and doing 4 point rotation will ensure the cylindrical shape?
Thank you! Expect the loc to expand regardless and the 4 pt. does ensure the cyl.shape as long as it's done correctly. Ever since I switched to 3 pt. my locs are fuller and allow more room for my kinks to mesh. With my new set of locs the shape is not as cylindrical as I thought it would be, but I don't mind.
where would I get the needle (nappy loc tool) I help my boyfriend tighten his locs but I use the palm roll method. But since he has sister locs like you...he has to go get his hair retightened at the shop. It would save us so much money if I could do it at home. Thanks for the information on how to do the retightening I just need to know where to purchase the tool. :)
Thank you. It depends on how much patience you have to maintain them if you are doing them yourself. My patience expired after 3 years and my locs took forever to latch, lol, and that's why I had to combine them. Now it's a breeze. :-)
I'm about to start my journey in the next wk or so and have been checking out a lot of videos on it. You make this method look so easy to retighten. Is this a better way to go than retwisting by hand w/ clips? I c you dont have to wet the roots at all this way either. It seems faster and tighter. Is this a way to start locs as well?
You can definitely start your locs this way. Interlocking allows you to wash your locs or sweat with them as many times as you want without having your roots unravel. It is a tedious process to start, so I would suggest starting with another method and then interlocking the new growth as it grows out to save you time.
i am so glad I stumbled upon this video... is it effective to begin my locks from scratch as palm rolled and then begin to interlock as they grow... I am hoping they maintain a neat and cylinder effect like yours eventually .... is it something you have to do in the begginnig or can you do it after say like three months of having them??
You can start them using the palm rolling method and then interlock the new growth. You can begin interlocking even from the first day, but just know that using two different textures can change the appearance of your locs.
HEY!!!! i started locing today! my bf as i started it :) i bought a tapestry needle and heated it and opened the eye so it is just like the nappy loc tool (which i can't get in my country) but i am on my way now :) thanks a mil for introducing me to this me to this method of locing! i may post a journey vid in the future :) thanks again.
@DynamicRunner thanks i will... one more thing. is there a difference between the effect achieved if i do a 4 direction interloc verses a two direction interloc?
hey i want to start locking my hair next month, i have a bit of growth but my hair is mostly jehri curls... i was wondering if i could lock the chemically treated hair as well as the roots and just cut the ends as it grows... will it work?
How long is your hair right now? You can start your locs and trim your ends as your roots grow out. Just know that you'll be working with two different hair textures which can be challenging, because chemically altered hair won't lock as well as your natural coils. The tighter the curl the easier and faster your hair will lock, hence the reason why people cut off the chemical part all together and start from scratch. If your comfortable with two textures then do what works best for you.
@DynamicRunner it is about 7.5 inches long. the chemically treated ends are not very curly but they are not straight... thanks for the advice though, i may just let it grow out abit more b4 locing it, but i am so excited for the change i just want it to grow so badly lol... thanks again for the advice.
I enjoy reading your blogs and watching your vids. I've been locked for almost four months. I am an avid DIYer and I've taken on tightening my own locks. I can do other things with the money I was spending. So keep posting vids. Thanks much
Hi. I'm in the process of getting sister locs *testing stage.* . But i was just curious, how many different ways can you tighten them? Does it matter which method you use? Should i use oils in my hair (not a lot of course)? And finally, who long should i wait before i start styling my hair? Thank you bunches.
*My appointment to get my hair done is on Nov 6. Thats when we will pick which pattern worked the best on my hair.*
Hi Sky. Normally SLs are tightened via interlocking because of its size, and twisting isn't recommended because it could weaken the root bed since they're so skinny for starters. The method used is important (to maintain the consistency in the loc's strength). Oils can attract dust/lint and cause buildup, but jojoba is closest to our natural sebum if you need to use oil. You can begin styling from the first day, but too much manipulation will cause unraveling and retard the locking process.
I am not sure which way to maintain my locks. I want traditional because I don't want them super small. I also want sisterlocks because of the variety of styles. I am praying about it. I just know I want locks. You went from sisterlocks to traditional locks. Are you still interlocking or are you twisting your locks? I am hopng to do something for Christmas. What ever I decide, I want to be committed to it. I want locks, but I want to be able to interlock with my locks.
Just to clarify, you can achieve a variety of styles no matter what size your locks are, and SO many loc tutorials. I had SLs, but couldn't create many styles because my hair was too thick. I still latch too. If small locs aren't for you, then don't get them or else you'll end up combining them in the end like I did. Get the size you want and be creative with your own styles. Styling is easier for me now that my locs are bigger and I have fewer than before to work with. Each head is different
You have inspired me to be locked. How does it feel when you retighten? Does it hurt? One girl said it felt like tiny points of pain all over her scalp. How are your combined locks dointg? I am not sure which locks to start with. Traditional or sisterlocks? I am going to locked no matter what. I don't mind maintaining myself. I need to love on myself a bit. Please advise. God bless you. thank you for your videos as well. : )
God bless you too! I make sure not to over tighten my locs because I have a very sensitive scalp. One shouldn't tighten to the point of pain because that is not good and can weaken your root bed. My combined locs are growing and i'll post a video soon. How do you plan to maintain your locks? Just remember that smaller locks = longer re-tightenings and bigger locks= shorter ones. Which method do you prefer? Both methods vary, so send me a message and I can explain more.
Actually when I had all those small locks I would break up my latching sessions. I would do the front one weekend and the back the next weekend because honestly I didn't have much free time to do my hair. I did it when I could. Thanks for the compliment.
Congrats! How did you start your locs? You can tighten them maybe 4 weeks from the time you started them in order to gauge how much new growth you have per month.
Thank you so much.Sorry for the delay. I am not loving this new Youtube format at all just seeing your message. I started my locs with two strand twists. At first I tried braidlocs but it would of taken to long to do on my hair. When you started your locs.. how long did you wait to wash? I'm going on 4 days basically newborns. First set I did with two strands I washed a week later and they unraveled. Loving your videos / fast response.
It's okay, it happens to the best of us :-) You'll learn as you go along, that's how I learned. I washed my hair on the 3rd or 4th day after my install because I have a scalp condition that requires me to wash my hair often. I'm doing better now and only wash once a week, but in the beginning it was VERY rough. For a minute I thought I couldn't wear locs because of my condition, but 5 months later I fell into the groove of things.
hi i just started doing my own re-tightening *thanks to your vids). I have the the front half but I dont know how to do the back? (its probably a dumb question, but Im scared of doing it bc I cant see the back of my head). How do you re-tighten the back part of your head?
Every 4-5 weeks since my hair grows quickly. If I wait longer than that, then my hair begins to bud/freeform and form a bubble between the latched part and my new growth.
Thank you. Great question by the way. None of my locs have broken off in my 3.5+ years of having them. I do have several that were thinning or weak and as a result I had to combine them just to make them stronger. As long as you care for your locs properly you shouldn't have any problems, but other factors will contribute to breakage, i.e. poor nutrition, stress, improper care and maintenance etc.
The 4pt. only requires one rotation if you tighten your hair every 4 - 6 weeks, but depending on how quickly or slowly your hair grows will determine how many rotations you should make.
I Was Considering Instantly Locking my hair With That Method By Starting At The Root And Go To The Tip, Then Wasting My hair With A Fider Cloth Then Add Loc Grease And Fiber Rolling It Again.. Is That Good?
I just want to make sure that i'm understanding you correctly. You would like to start your hair using the latching or palm rolling method, wash your hair and continue twisting the roots with a locking gel? Please correct me if i'm wrong. :-)
My loctician has become too expensive. I have about 1 inch of new growth on top of my locs and am looking to incorporate the new growth into the locs. Since I no longer have the individual parts to distinguish the locs, I am thinking about combining locs and incorporating the new growth. Can you demonstrate how to do that or point me to a YouTube user who knows? Thanks.
Hi Lee, I have two videos that demonstrate how to do both. To combine your locks, view my "Combining Locs" video. To incorporate new growth, view my "Loc How To: Sewing In Loose Hair Strands." Hope this helps. :-)
Do you use the same direction sequence for your entire head or do you adjust them depending on whether you're doing the back , the front left, & the front right? For example, the part of your head you were retightening in the video was with a rotation NESW...do you use the same rotation NESW for the back & front left side of your head? Am I making sense? Hope so. lol Thanks.
Great question and I know what you're talking about. I adjust them based on which section i'm working on and how I would like my locs to fall. I always try to end on a point where my locks fall will fall back or down versus forward for example.
I know you've probably answered this a bunch of times by now but how long does it take you to tighten your locs? are your locs considered small? what size tool are you using? did you start them yourself? and when they were started what method did you use to start them? your locs look nice by the way. thanks dewdrop
No problem. It takes me 6-8 hours to tighten my microlocks , they are considered small and I use my latch hook now that they're a little bigger (I was using my size small NL tool before). I started and maintain my locks by interlocking my new growth (after combining an old set of baby locs). Thanks for the compliment. :-)
Peace, I love your videos. I'm about to order a lock tool. Is the one you're using the smallest one? I think it said 1/14 or something like that? Also did you order yours or purchased it locally. I'm in Stone Mountain GA.
You can use a latch-hook (from a craft/sewing store) or order a tool like mine from the website 'nappynhappy'. You can also make your own tool and Mattiedora's channel shows you how.

I enjoy your videos and I have a couple of questions. 1. How do you tighten the back of your hair? 2. Are you using a mirror to view your hair for this video? If so, how do you have it set up? Thanks and be blessed.
I tighten the back of my hair by just feeling for each lock and visualizing the pattern and how I will tighten them. Also, I make sure to keep neighboring locks out of the way when i'm working on that lock. You can set up a big mirror next to your camera just to help you see what you are doing when video taping. It really does help, especially when making a tutorial. You be blessed too. :-)
Hi DynamicRunner - just subscribed to your site - where can I also purchase the nappy lock tool. Very helpful, step-by-step video - I love it! You have given me confidence that I can do this. LOVING YOUR LOCS!
I wanna start my loc journey but i'm not sure which method i want to get them done with but i love your dreads.. they look great! is their a specific name for that style.. and which method did you use?
Thank you! My locks were started with the sisterlocks method which is basically and interlocking method using a tool. I'll send you more info. about your options. :-)

trivie70 1 year ago
God bless you too! I make sure not to over tighten my locs because I have a very sensitive scalp. One shouldn't tighten to the point of pain because that is not good and can weaken your root bed. My combined locs are growing and i'll post a video soon. How do you plan to maintain your locks? Just remember that smaller locks = longer re-tightenings and bigger locks= shorter ones. Which method do you prefer? Both methods vary, so send me a message and I can explain more.
DynamicRunner 1 year ago
shit girl you must really have a lot of time on your hands to be able to tighten all them small locks. nice video though
airasweetie 1 year ago
Actually when I had all those small locks I would break up my latching sessions. I would do the front one weekend and the back the next weekend because honestly I didn't have much free time to do my hair. I did it when I could. Thanks for the compliment.

I started my locs yesterday.. I have a question when can I began the tightening process or when did you start yours. Should I wait a month or more?
crit1227 1 year ago
Congrats! How did you start your locs? You can tighten them maybe 4 weeks from the time you started them in order to gauge how much new growth you have per month.
DynamicRunner 1 year ago
@DynamicRunner
Loving your videos / fast response.
crit1227 1 year ago
It's okay, it happens to the best of us :-) You'll learn as you go along, that's how I learned. I washed my hair on the 3rd or 4th day after my install because I have a scalp condition that requires me to wash my hair often. I'm doing better now and only wash once a week, but in the beginning it was VERY rough. For a minute I thought I couldn't wear locs because of my condition, but 5 months later I fell into the groove of things.
DynamicRunner 1 year ago
can you do it if ur locs are not locked yet? Im in my 4th month and mine are not locked yet but I want to interlock next time I get my hair done.

hi i just started doing my own re-tightening *thanks to your vids). I have the the front half but I dont know how to do the back? (its probably a dumb question, but Im scared of doing it bc I cant see the back of my head). How do you re-tighten the back part of your head?
04rosanna04 1 year ago
how often do you do your roots?
mzOsagie 1 year ago
Every 4-5 weeks since my hair grows quickly. If I wait longer than that, then my hair begins to bud/freeform and form a bubble between the latched part and my new growth.
DynamicRunner 1 year ago
Omg i know that took forever!
TheEditor80 1 year ago
No, not really. Once you get a feel for it then you will move through each lock quickly.

I always hear ppl talking about thin locks... Well, I was just noticing that your locks are thin also...
Have any of them ever broken off or anything ??? I have a few thin locks myself... I woder if I should combine them or not ???
Nice video by the way.....
THADOUGHBOY15 1 year ago
DynamicRunner 1 year ago
This method seems to be easier then the latchlook! I will try this one

if we have more hair can we do a 2nd rotation ?
totalgoofchick 1 year ago
If you still have more growth after your first rotation than you can continue the rotation until the tool doesn't fit through any more.
DynamicRunner 1 year ago
Just those 4 and on to the next?
whutakutmk 1 year ago
Take it one lock at a time and don't rush yourself. It helps to section off your hair and work on each section at your own leisure.
DynamicRunner 1 year ago
Peace how many rotation ?
whutakutmk 1 year ago
The 4pt. only requires one rotation if you tighten your hair every 4 - 6 weeks, but depending on how quickly or slowly your hair grows will determine how many rotations you should make.

I Was Considering Instantly Locking my hair With That Method By Starting At The Root And Go To The Tip, Then Wasting My hair With A Fider Cloth Then Add Loc Grease And Fiber Rolling It Again.. Is That Good?
halllance08 1 year ago
I just want to make sure that i'm understanding you correctly. You would like to start your hair using the latching or palm rolling method, wash your hair and continue twisting the roots with a locking gel? Please correct me if i'm wrong. :-)

@DynamicRunner Yeah

Thanks.
Lee
LadyLocked 1 year ago
Hi Lee, I have two videos that demonstrate how to do both. To combine your locks, view my "Combining Locs" video. To incorporate new growth, view my "Loc How To: Sewing In Loose Hair Strands." Hope this helps. :-)
DynamicRunner 1 year ago
Do you use the same direction sequence for your entire head or do you adjust them depending on whether you're doing the back , the front left, & the front right? For example, the part of your head you were retightening in the video was with a rotation NESW...do you use the same rotation NESW for the back & front left side of your head? Am I making sense? Hope so. lol Thanks.
LovedByMeBeautifully 1 year ago
Great question and I know what you're talking about. I adjust them based on which section i'm working on and how I would like my locs to fall. I always try to end on a point where my locks fall will fall back or down versus forward for example.

what if my dreads are too thick?
guitarmessiah95 1 year ago
You can still tighten them with any pattern, but just make sure that you have enough new growth first.
DynamicRunner 1 year ago
are you able to do this technique with short hair?
TheDegree410 1 year ago
Oh yes, of course.
DynamicRunner 1 year ago
I know you've probably answered this a bunch of times by now but how long does it take you to tighten your locs? are your locs considered small? what size tool are you using? did you start them yourself? and when they were started what method did you use to start them? your locs look nice by the way. thanks dewdrop
Aarttyst 1 year ago

Thank you. I am using the 1/4 size small tool in this video and I sent you a message with a link to where you can purchase it.
DynamicRunner 1 year ago
You can use a latch-hook (from a craft/sewing store) or order a tool like mine from the website 'nappynhappy'. You can also make your own tool and Mattiedora's channel shows you how.

I enjoy your videos and I have a couple of questions. 1. How do you tighten the back of your hair? 2. Are you using a mirror to view your hair for this video? If so, how do you have it set up? Thanks and be blessed.
ovrjoyed 1 year ago
I tighten the back of my hair by just feeling for each lock and visualizing the pattern and how I will tighten them. Also, I make sure to keep neighboring locks out of the way when i'm working on that lock. You can set up a big mirror next to your camera just to help you see what you are doing when video taping. It really does help, especially when making a tutorial. You be blessed too. :-)
