When I was a little girl of 11 in the choir, this was my favourite piece. There's a videotape of me (I didn't know my dad was up at the organ filming me) where you can see me asking the girl next to me for a pen, writing something on my hand, showing it to her and silently giggling. I wish I remembered what I wrote, because it must have been amazingly insightful. This is such an amazing piece - I wonder what was important enough that it couldn't wait till after!
Through the arch, behind the chioir as we are looking at them, back into the ante-chapel to the right on the wall is a simple, dignified memorial stone to Dr George Guest....without whom none of this would have been possible!!!

@pjdonagh Really? That NW corner of the building, the small chapel/sarcophagus opposite of where the choir processes in from the choir school? Never knew that! Dr. Guest certainly did save that choir from the nonsense of the mid-1950's!
No, Peter is in fact playing the organ in this video, I think its just one of those Internet Myths that its Allan Walker!!! Great Playing from a student anyhow!
Peter Davis is seen playing in the video though I have heard that the actual audio was played by Allan Walker, his predecessor as senior organ scholar.
We used to love this when I was a treble back in the 70s, we were always begging to have it put on the music list. Such a great piece - such a relief after all that other Victorian tripe we had to sing.
I'd like to know....I have this whole program recorded on VHS from TV (a program named In Concert on EWTN) years ago, but the quality is not nearly as fine (they also do Malcolm Boyle's Thou, O God, Art Praised in Zion!)...so please do tell.
Ave Verum. Popular Choral Classics. Published by Brilliant Classics. Number 6323. An excellent DVD! I bough it from the shop in Salisbury Cathedral. (I think...)
I was in a choir for 10 years and this was my favourite thing to sing, i can rember the latin verse off by heart, i sang this as Soprano and Tenor, but theres something about singing it in Soprano that feels soo incredible, especially in the right church or cathedral the acoustics really add to the high notes
It simply doesn't get any better than that. We've sung this at our church in California, and did a very credible job... but certainly nothing like this. Brilliant!
I like how at 5.20, the organist is giving the great manual some welly, then at 5.35 he draws it all back in to a single stopped-diapason or flute, or whatever it is. It's so effective
Wonderful. Sang this last week in our men and boy choir as well. Great "Strum unt Drang" drama, and is as much as a treat to sing as well as to listen to. Thank you DonRaphel.
This was my all time favorite when i was in my choir

Nungael 2 years ago
I have to say, I like it better with a full orchestra behind it. It seems a bit bland with an organ. Brilliant choir, however. =)
Phraun 3 years ago
I'm the opposite. I think having just a simple organ accompaniment enhances the performance - the focus is nearly all on the vocal part.
I dislike full orchestras - especially when they drown out the choir.
Knappa22 3 years ago 2
Come to think of it, I also prefer orchestras to choirs, so I guess I'm a bit bias... To each his own, I suppose. =)
Phraun 3 years ago
Breathtaking! Only Johns has this wholesome massive sound.
Kings sounds more breathy somehow.
Johns - the best choir in Cambridge. Fact.
