  • i live like 2mins from here lol!

  • Its pronounced Beaulieu Be-u-lie, I should know because New Hall School is my school.

  • My other house is a mansion.

  • That's strange to me...as an American we get closer to the French when we say words borrowed from French! Like and an American would say "bow champ" (short A) for beauchamp...interesting. I was a French major at Uni so I guess the whole "beewley" thing just bothered me!

  • it's the norman french pronunciation.

what uni did you get your degree from?

  • I agree! I speak English as well as French and I just stared when I had heard the pronunciation!

  • I think the narrator needs to work on his French pronunciation!

  • if you mean "bewley" instead of "beaulieu", that´s probably the english pronunciation, not the narrator´s poor french. a bit like "beecham" for "beauchamp". but i don´t know the place, so anyone out there in the know is welcome to correct me on this.

  • thats right - the anglicized pronounciation is bewley

  • cheers, jules.

  • @fatmaccam Lord Montagu, an old friend, once told me that the ancient French pronunciation of "Beaulieu"s indeed Byou-lee, which is the correct pronunciation of the region, estate and title today in England. Of course, in France, the pronunciation is entirely modern.
