Really sad to see the Airborne element of A Bty gone - I was very keen to join Arty as my Great Grandfather served in Gallipoli and in the Somme during WW1 with the 1st Field Arty Batallion, 1st brigade,1st bty. Now what am I gonna do? Shifting to mortars isn't it?
Arty - bloody hard yakka...maybe not quite as physically demanding as the infantry - but sure goes close sometimes!! More thinking involved than with the infantry though.
hey dude im a gunner and heres the best info i (or anyone) can EVER give you.............DONT JOIN ARTY!!!! recruiting lies!! theres soo many better jobs in the adf...oh and BTW,pucka is a shit hole!
I had the same problem myself. I loved my job when I actually got to do it. However having cockheads standing over you all day long spouting their bullshit got pretty old. I also used to hate the old duties weeks not to mention being out bush for a week or two and the first chance you get to have a break you end up working a fucking officers mess function so thye can have dinner with their missus while you may not even get to see yours. I used to be in 103 mdm bty
A Battery is the only parachute battery in the Army. And with the re-rolling of 3RAR into mechanized infantry, it doesn't look like there'll be airborne gunners for long.
The only parachute unit in the Army Reserve is the 1st Commando Regiment. Just out of curiosity though, which unit are you joining?
Thx for the reply man. I haven't joined the Army Reserves yet, but planning to at the end of August. I live in north/west Sydney if that helps. Do you have any idea what unit that might put me in?
That'd probably be either 7th Field Regiment or 23rd Field Regiment. You're quite lucky though - they're the only reserve artillery units that use the Hamel gun, as seen in this video. With any lucky, you'll get some shoots in before everyone else transfers to mortars.
I can tell you right now, mortars aren't nearly as good as the guns.
I've heard the NSW batteries actually have more than enough manpower to move onto medium guns instead of mortars. The other Reserve batteries are quite undermanned, cannot bring sizeable enough batteries into the field and the mortars provide the perfect solution (3 men to a mortar instead of 7 men and a truck to a field gun).
I daresay you may move onto medium guns soon - but here in Victoria, we've already switched to mortars. The other batteries will follow suit soon.
Im from 7th field, 28 bty, we may be going to mortars soon, I will miss the guns but the mortars should be an interesting change in tactics and equipment...
Top video guys, Hamel guns are bloody awesome, the GRes unit I wanna join is going from the old M2A2's to 81mm mortars at the end of the year, no big guns for me :(
God! What a typical grunt attitude. The ARA needs a proper fucking deployment to wake up some baby grunts who have no idea what the value of OS is. I guess you have not been anywhere so I also guess you have never needed OS, and dont say East Timor, let talk sand, the US/UK and Dutch OS has got the boys out of some real heavy shit via our FO/JTAC's get a life man instead of being a narrow minded 4 year wonder!!
Heavy enemy counter battery fire? Where would that be? The Teletubbies in the Ghan don't have that capability, just RPGs and suicide bombers. These guns are just as capable of destroying an enemy as the bigger 155mm guns and 10km isn't short range. Be aware that these bombs can be on target in well under 2 minutes if needed; try that with a jet. Takes them ages just to do preflight checks and get airborne.
Can these scouts hit the target?

Major downfall of the job was having to work with a heap of wankers.
Plus too many rules and regulations, I'm not the biggest fan of authority...

Awesome video. I am hoping to join the Army Reserve as a Gun Number very soon.
Just one question: Does anyone know if there are any parachute field artillery batteries for reservists or do they only exist for the regular army?
Cheers

I miss the guns. Sometimes I wish the old Infantry mortar platoon would raid our depot in the dead of the night and take their smelly tubes back.

more than 10km with double baffle. i think these single type are used for training with the others creted up for deployment
