I'm not sure if this is why he doesn't rotate the hips, but this is why I don't. Flexibility? If I rotate and drive my hips hard, it takes my right shoulder with it and forces and over-the-top pull. The harder I rotate the hips, the further left I pull it. I think you need a lot of flexibility so that when you rotate the hips (assuming that you can maintain your posture when you do so) that it doesn't pull the shoulders with it.
@chabelyk You don't necessarily need a lot of flexibility. What I think you're doing is you're letting instinct take over. The golf swing ISN'T a natural move. So if you just focus on rotating the hips as fast as possible, youre almost guaranteed to come over the top. Whenever I need more power and decide to rotate my hips a little faster, I make sure to stay on plane. The faster I rotate, the more conscious I am of staying on plane/not coming over the top.
