Ummmm... why is this called "shelter humor"? I don't find it one damn bit funny. 100 dogs a day get the needle at the shelter in my city. The city sends a full sized garbage truck out there daily to pick up 100 plastic bags full of unwanted dogs.

Volunteers want to be able to call animal owners who pull this stunt morons all the time, but have to abstain. This is their outlet :)
@etaion99 You must not work at a shelter. It's hard having to see all the great animals that get euthanized on a daily basis. Those of us who work at the shelters encounter morons like this daily! That is why this is humorous, its a reality of the ignorance in our society. Its funny because we would all love to educate these people and show them what really goes on in the shelter when they abandon their animals for such ridiculous reasons (not that there isn't legitamit reasons, there are)

Shelter workers aren't any more innocent than the people they have to deal with everyday. My dog came from somebody who worked at the SPCA who "saved" this puppy from euthanasia. But just like the people they judge, as soon as he was too big and not so cute, she came looking for another owner and that's where I came in.
@voxgirl I sooooooooooo wish that the base ombudsmen would help our rescue group with a military foster program, but they all seem to be more concerned with the damamge the dogs might do to base housing. :(

Oh this is so fucked up typical!! How many cats I've seen 8-10 years old, that were so traumatized because their owners "didn't need them" any more" and brought them to the Shelter! My favorite is "I just found out I'm allergic" This is within a range of 1 week to years!!

A few years ago, when my now ex took off with younger woman, I asked him, 'What do you want to do with your dog?' Since he had been the one, insistent on getting the dog in the first place. His response? "Golden Rescue" ... My response "My dog, then. " That was 4 years ago. And he's such sweet, fun retriever (currently asleep on my feet.)
(Within 2 years of this, he had two new dogs, and two new cats . He'd left his cat, too. He said the girl was allergic.)
I'm a volunteer at my local SPCA, and I can tell you I see stupid people like this all of the time. The even sadder rescues are ones from the South (I live in the Northeast.)

So true. Everybody thinks the animal they leave is "so cute" it will be adopted but unfortunately most adult animals-especially those over 2 years old will probably be euthanized :(
It would be wonderful if every shelter could have this playing on a loop in the lobby as people come to dump off their pets. The all time dumbest line for a surrender we heard was "We just changed our carpet and Toby's fur does not match the new color".
You have to relate to the cartoon worker who states " It's people like you who keep me on medication....." Classic.
This reminds me of when a firend went to rescue some kittens have mom spayed. The owner could not understand how she had gotten pregnant. She was not allowed out & had no contact with male cats. My friend noticed a large tom stroll across the living room and asked, "What about him?" The owner responded, "It couldn't be him, he's her brother."
I love it. OMG!!! I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. Reminds me of the lady who's child didn't talk. The school asked the mother if she talked to her kid and she said "No, why would I? She can't talk".

Everyone here that has or have had anything to do with pet shelters or responsible rescue groups knows this scenario backwards and forwards, sometimes you just want to reach out and grab them by their throat!
The vast majority of time it's not a dog problem it's a intentionally ignorant stupid and irresponsible owner problem. Problem with the dog? Ditch it and get another one maybe the next one will be smart enough to use the toilet properly.

The repitition from the surrenderer, totally shows peoples mind set. Grrr!~We foster critters & the people are so annoying & irritating. Animals are much nicer than most people. I'd rather clean up poo all day long, than deal with some people.
Owner turns are sometimes killed in less than 24 hours if the shelter is full. Shelters only have to keep lost or stray dogs for a certain number of days but not owner turn ins.
The thing is that this actually happens so often, that it is not really funny. But... whoever made this video must have loads of real hands on experience.
Love how the shelter worker puts down the idiot owner in smooth little bites. It's what we shelter volunteers would like to say to the damn morons surrendering their pets.

this is exactly why I have such difficulty volunteering at the local shelter. It's really just too painful to me to see and work with these dogs that are sweet and older and will never leave the shelter because the idiots who surrendered them never bothered to teach the dogs how to live in our human world. We can't always blame the people who must surrender their animals...look at the root of the problem- over-population. Spaying and neutering are the answer!!

I vol for Australian Shepherd Rescue in MI...this is exactly the kind of idiot rescues deal with. In the past year we have had a blind dog dumped at a golf course and another dog tied to a sign saying "free dog" with no food or water.
Those in rescue hear/have the exact same conversation with complete dumbnuts every single day. It is so real it's not even funny.

So true. Everybody thinks the animal they leave is "so cute" it will be adopted but unfortunately most adult animals-especially those over 2 years old will probably be euthanized :(

It would be wonderful if every shelter could have this playing on a loop in the lobby as people come to dump off their pets. The all time dumbest line for a surrender we heard was "We just changed our carpet and Toby's fur does not match the new color".
You have to relate to the cartoon worker who states " It's people like you who keep me on medication....." Classic.

This reminds me of when a firend went to rescue some kittens have mom spayed. The owner could not understand how she had gotten pregnant. She was not allowed out & had no contact with male cats. My friend noticed a large tom stroll across the living room and asked, "What about him?" The owner responded, "It couldn't be him, he's her brother."

Everyone here that has or have had anything to do with pet shelters or responsible rescue groups knows this scenario backwards and forwards, sometimes you just want to reach out and grab them by their throat!
The vast majority of time it's not a dog problem it's a intentionally ignorant stupid and irresponsible owner problem. Problem with the dog? Ditch it and get another one maybe the next one will be smart enough to use the toilet properly.
What's a crate? AAhaaaaa, somebody stop me!

Thank you. for so long ive wanted yo say all of those things to the horrible person infront of me 'donating' their animal. i want them to realize they are the direct reason why animals are dying instead of them telling me im the reason why because i work at the shelter. But since i must hold my tongue, it helps a ton to be able to laugh at this and know im not the only one and it gives me drive to keep going.

Owner turns are sometimes killed in less than 24 hours if the shelter is full. Shelters only have to keep lost or stray dogs for a certain number of days but not owner turn ins.

this is exactly why I have such difficulty volunteering at the local shelter. It's really just too painful to me to see and work with these dogs that are sweet and older and will never leave the shelter because the idiots who surrendered them never bothered to teach the dogs how to live in our human world. Thank you so much for making this video. I have worked at an animal shelter for the last 5 years. I wonder if people who don't work in a shelter environment think this is a dramatization. It is not. I vol for Australian Shepherd Rescue in MI...this is exactly the kind of idiot rescues deal with. In the past year we have had a blind dog dumped at a golf course and another dog tied to a sign saying "free dog" with no food or water.
People are idiots. Dogs don't train themselves.
