For those who hate the music today, it just sounds like you think music from now on will never be good, ever again. Look, respect each others opinions, but sometimes opinions can hurt, whether you meant to hurt someone or not.
I am sick of this arguing. Look, oldies rock. And I will admit that some of the music today is messed up (Give me ONE good rap song that doesn't sing about sex, drugs, parties or money), but not all media of the 21st century sucks.
Some alternative is awesome, and not all pop is dead.
This song ROCKS!! i'm 16 and i think that the music today just little fairy whiney crap. it makes me throw up. I wasn't meant for this generation. Practically all my cd's consist of 60s, 70s and 80s, and some 90s. I don't even like the new movies that have been released past 4 or 5 years. I don't like the fashion of today, (hair) either! Seriously this generation SUCKS!
@ultrachasersfan at last a teenager who has great taste in music and fashion. I was a teen in the 70/ 80`s and they were fantastic for music and everything. We may not have had internet or ipods but we had a great time. I only wish i could have lived through the 60`s. The 80`s were pure gold for tv, music and fashion . We may not have had ipods or dvds but we had walkmans and vhs, ahh happy days.
@ultrachasersfan Lol @ throw up you made me smile with that comment. time moves on sadly this was the music, i wasnt born till 75. but todays tunes are not so bad. lol.
@ultrachasersfan dude, just because u dont like today's music,it doesnt mean it sucks....someone thinks that music from 60's suck...so keep ur comments for urself will ya?
@ultrachasersfan yeah, the best thing you can do is keep telling your friends. I grew up in the 80s and most of what I could stand was not in the top 40. Of course, top 40 80s music sounds like genius compared to today. Part of the problem is the media has been taken over by morons. Music-loving djs don't have a say anymore.
Somehow '84 was quite the year for sweaters. Now mine were in very tasteful earthtones & weaves. Too bad I was too young to think about mothballs. Another fun thing, the sets & locales remind me a lot of the revived Doctor Who stories in London.
yes.. sometimes i do this...i'm doing it now!.. really. and i'm kicking my legs like i'm in splashdance.... but no buckets of water, no.... just tears.. lots of tears so as to look like i'm all wet. yes...
ahhhhhhhhhh the cold war fears of the 80s... i remember when i first saw this video made me so very sad... cut me some slack i was just a hormonally challenged teenager!
This song is totally different than Ke$ha.. Ultravox is about an explosion wiping out people (?) but Ke$ha's drunk (but addictive) lyrics are about how she's gonna end up like Lindsay Lohan
This one most classic band and song ever writing it interesting though that this song was based on film Theads in 1986 (i think it was) but Ultravox are one my favourite band and im glad they are back together.
Haha! Nice post. You hit the nail on the head. Where is the talent today? I stopped listening to the radio in the early 90s. 70s and 80s were the best. Glad I grew up in those days. Feel sorry for the kids these days.

Anyone who wants to hear good music nowadays needs to become a librarian so you can search the vaults for great stuff like this!
Beyonce, Jay-Z, Britney, Christina, etc.... WTF?! - Go away and get decent jobs and make way for people with talent.
Great song and video: reminds me of the fear everyone had of nuclear war in the early and mid 80s and the frightening talk of "what would you do if you heard the 4 minute warning" strangely very nostalgic..
Wow, 15 years old and absolutely no manners. You, young man, are indeed a sign of the times and a confirmation that listening to the new breed of 'music' damages the grey matter.
Please understand the right to a difference of opinion and learn correct etiquette for social discourse rather than attempting to insult your elders with rude, immature comments.
Hmm.. A typical adult that enjoys in stereotyping teenagers. Why am I not surprised? Maybe I would show you respect if you actually deserved it. Music from the past does not deserve any more credit than today's, nor should it receive any more. Maybe if you learn to appreciate both styles of music instead of implying that old is better and new is corruption, then maybe... just maybe you might realize the talent that is put into these new artist today. Good day, sir.
The fact that someone young enough to be my son should be arrogant , presumptuous and rude enough to revile me publicly for merely stating my opinion (which is based on a lot of research along with many years experience of the music industry) is indeed a telling sign of the times for those who know and understand the realities of these days in which we live. I know many teenagers whom I admire for their good manners, amazing work ethics and effort; you are not yet among them. Peace!
@Ginakuya what talent these days? Some tone deaf idiot taking drugs has there voice changed electronically and we are supposed to like and respect that? They "sing" to computerised music because they are so talentless most of them can't even read let alone write a song or music. Now admittedly, there is great talent out there in the new bands and singers of today, but few and far between. If you don't like it, turn it off, it's not rocket science,or is it for some?
@Ginakuya@Ginakuya dream on. There is much music today that is worthy, but almost none of it is in the top40, which is actually nothing new. That said, this is a pathetically undertrained generation.
If you think any of the bands that are rehashing the 80s style are anything but shadows, wrong. Muse is sometimes great, often average,
Arcade Fire are overrated, the Killers are stupid, and I've yet to hear one facsimile punk or metal band that is any good. The best music of today is electronic.
@khaadimone Beyonce is a great dancer & singer, JayZ a creative rapper, Britney an awesome dancer, entertainer & piano player, and Christina has an amazing voice & style. No talent? ... bitch please
Search YouTube for: "The Industry Exposed" and learn a few things about these people. I don't "bitch" about anyone, ever! I just happen to have a problem with people selling their souls for profit and fame and then pushing that filth onto unsuspecting youth. If you don't know what I'm talking about then please do your own research.
@khaadimone Wait a minute. With all due respect sir, music is completely subjective. Ultravox is an incredible band, and this song is timeless. Just becuse you do not like music by "modern-day" artists does not mean you should insult those who do. To each his own....Beyonce, Jay-Z, Britney, Christina are talented Grammy winning artists
Here is my response to a similar criticism: Search YouTube for: "The Industry Exposed" and learn a few things about these people. I don't "bitch" about anyone, ever! I just happen to have a problem with people selling their souls for profit and fame and then pushing that filth onto unsuspecting youth. If you don't know what I'm talking about then please do your own research.
@khaadimone I agree that the music of today's top40 is about as bad as it's ever been, but remember, Ultravox was not number one, at least not in the US. THe biggest problem today is rap, Jay-Z, the abomination of R&B by Beyonce, Aguilera and other hacks. Hard Rock and Metal are non-existent. SOAD and Tool are the last of the mohicans. THere are just too many douchebags in this generation who think they are better than they are because there's no older generation producers or DJs around.
So many great memorys for me, i was about 10 when this was in the charts and remember being on holiday at the time in blackpool :D frankie says T-shirts, GO-GO T-shirts the smell of burgers the noise of the arcades christ i so wish i could relive this great decade best days of my life :)
@grobbledonk: an unusual coincidence, nothing more. I sense you might be a serious 'fan' though, so please don't think I was suggesting the pint-sized Scottish warbler was responsible for trashing reactor No 4.
@ProsperosCloset - No no, not a serious fan. Was just trawling youtube at work for songs I hadn't heard since adolscence or childhood, for some inexplicable reason. Your comment was lost on me though... maybe I wasn't quite on the ball at the time...
other then that the 80's were cool oh hang on on a mo school was awfull back then let me tell you rose tinted glasses wont cover how bad the 80's where i know because i lived it
I just don't have an appreciation for most older generation music...but that doesn't give me a reason to bash it. I'd just like to say that I like Ke$ha's cover of this song better...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
ew i thought it was gonna come up with kesha this is old people crap i hated their style and hair back then probably the worst US style time period BLAHHH!
i feel very privilaged to have had the eightees as my era so to speak, young enough to appreciate the 60's and 70's best and old enough to realise that alot of modern music today just isnt of the same quality
I think it was just about Britain's nuclear power situation generally, and how stupidly it might all end. We didn't need a nuclear war, just a relatively small accident, to kill millions of people in a horrific and painful way.
the lyrics are ironic considering the nostalgia I feel for the music from this time. I miss the music from the 80's. The thing that really sticks in my mind from being a teen in that decade was waking up every morning wondering if this would be the day that some one 'pushed the button'.
How on EARTH did I forget just how good these guys were? We need bands like this again, if only to remove the cancer that is Simon Cowell and the X Factor.
Even though history eventually vindicated him on this, I can imagine how a lot of people would have thought Reagan would end the world with his nuclear build up and turning his back on concession base diplomacy with the USSR.
Not trying to start a political discussion here, just saying that the 80s are an example of how there are two sides to things.
It was a great era for music, that's for sure. Which is a good thing because socially, it was a mess both sides of the continent. I think most of us loved the music for many reasons, but for me, it helped me cope with the crap that was going on around me, I was the happiest when I was in my room, listening to Duran Duran, Johnny Hates Jazz, Journey, A-ha, Kim Wilde, and even Samantha Fox! Nothing's changed at all, it still makes me happy! And that's the important thing I think:)
i was a little boy when i watched this video and i was so frightend of the nuclear reactor thtr 2000 30 kilometers from my hometown away....very spooky video.....coole nummer!!!!!
Kids of today - we grew up in the 80's under the shadow of possible nuclear war and total annihilation. I remember our 'religious education' classes consisted of watching documentaries about nukes and the aftermath.. this vid brings it all back
@smokiexsmartie , Great song. I remember the films; Threads, The Day After and War Games all focused on the fear of Nuclear War. The Cold War was still very much on people's minds...then the Berlin Wall would fall in the late 80s.
I love this song ... and the band.

i feel very privilaged to have had the eightees as my era so to speak, young enough to appreciate the 60's and 70's best and old enough to realise that alot of modern music today just isnt of the same quality

A very good video and song to go with it! Thanks for posting!

I think it was just about Britain's nuclear power situation generally, and how stupidly it might all end. We didn't need a nuclear war, just a relatively small accident, to kill millions of people in a horrific and painful way.

the 80's rock, that was proper music x
mrswendy32 1 year ago
the lyrics are ironic considering the nostalgia I feel for the music from this time.

Weird, if you think about how this videoclip became reality two years later in 1986 in Chernobyl. This is such a beautiful song. Love you Ultravox!
