All my life, I've felt that there is something beyond materialism and dogma. YET at the same time, there is something beautiful and completely priceless about the *things* material objects and religion signify.
I felt completely alone until I discovered the writings of transcendentalists, who put my deepest experiences and dreams of humanity into poetry.

@ninjamonkeys21 The problem is, the alternative to trusting ourselves and our experience is trusting other people and THEIR experience, and other people are just as capable of being wrong as we are. First-hand always trumps second-hand, in my book. The Buddha said, "Believe nothing, no matter who said it or where you read it, unless it agrees with your own experience and common sense." Emerson was basically saying the same thing.
