clinton signed a bill that furthered the amount of guns banned from importation in 1996 from the initial import ban of 1989. The spas-15 was sadly on the newer list of import bans and only a few hundred were imported before the ban hit. In the usa if you have one you can trade it legally with other citizens just like the spas 12 which was also banned during the 1996 import ban list.
I have a Spas 15 for sale. It has the folding stock and 3 magazines. They are legal to own but only 180 - 200 were importated back in the day making it a very rare and expensive weopon. Send me a pm if interested.
As long as it's smoothbore, it's not a destructive device. as long as the 10-foreign-parts-and-under law is followed, they're fully legal. problem is, only 200 were imported.
@HobMills No idea. there might be some special restriction due to the pistol grip or something. Or maybe the gun itself is outlawed. after all, the only thing more complicated, contradictory , and nonsensical than the tax code in this country are the BATFE regs.
@HobMills Probably nothing more complex than how cost-effective that is. Why spend the time and money importing SPAS-15s to the States when there are simpler, cheaper semiautomatic shotguns for private purposes out there, like the Super 90/M1014?
@RRVCrinale In some sporting disciplines, like IPSC Open Class competitions, fast reloading is needed. A shotgun with a detachable magazine can be reloaded much faster. They are a great advantage, especially with drum magazines.
I guess if you've got the scratch then you can take advantage of this. I mean, for an Open Class gun cost is usually no object.
The SPAS-15 is still complex and expensive to produce, so I suppose that still does cut down on its overall export numbers. Still though, that is a good reason to export them to shooters in the US who need this level of speed and can handle this level of complexity.
@RRVCrinale In the past SPAS 15 was an expensive gun, but since two years ago SPAS 15 prices are declining. They are not more expensive than a Saiga 12. Sometimes you can get a new one even cheaper than a Saiga 12. But I personnaly prefer the Molot Vepr 12, because the SPAS-15 is a very bulky shotgun and not very comfortable to use.
@RRVCrinale also the super 90/m1014 is imported from italy!! and also the m90 is an expansive shotgun!! you can't compare hight quality shotgun like franchi or benelli with low quality shotgun like mossberg or saiga!! bye
@mitchellace Lol? The AA-12 is a full-auto that can launch grenade shells, and thanks to FOPA its only legal to criminals, and law enforcement. and even if it wasnt ban, i bet the government would ve made some other lame excuse on ehy they banned these things.

didn't the clinton ban lapse recently? I remember a huge hullabaloo a few years go when it came up for re-eval and didn't get passed.

Can you buy them in the USA? If so where?

@KarasCyborg As far as I know the SPAS-15 is classified as a destructive device. So its not possible to import these guns for private purposes.

@Thuringen Thanks for the information. But when these guns aren't destructive devices, why is it not possible to import more of these?

It may be cheap from where you're at, but here in the US, it is a sought off collector's item and very expensive.
Tis a shame. =(
