Years ago I read a book that gave a step by step manufacuring method for TNT. It used three steps at differing temperatures to make 1 nitro toluene, 2 nitro toluene and 3 nitro toluene. Unfortunately I forgot the name of the book, thought it was "Elements of Ordnance" but my 1938 copy doesn't have it. Does anyone know the proper source material?
peroximane I'm from Brazil I would understand if the picric acid (TNP) is used as a detonation capsule and it would be possible to detonate RDX and TNT
Yes, Picric Acid was discovered prior to the American Civil War and was known only as a yellow dye for silks. It was only after the Civil War that its explosive nature was discovered and used militarily.
Great HunChemist; your contributions to our collective knowledge cannot be accurately assessed; suffice it to say that those of us who are baby chemists (like me), stand in awe of, and in gratitude for the knowledge that you share with us. If I ever come to Hungary, I would be honored if you would permit me to take you for a good lunch, or whatever you want. I would also be happy to send you a portable propane torch, since you may find one useful in your efforts.
@neovictorius Nitric acid and water form a 68-70% azeotrope, a combination that cannot be distilled past 68-70% by normal distillation methods. The trick is to start with a combination that has little or no water at all. A mixture of 96-98% H2SO4 and KNO3 will dissociate into nitric acid and K2SO4; by heating the mixture to ~85C, the nearly pure HNO3 will be driven off, and can be collected with a Graham condenser, and a flask. If you use 100% H2SO4, you will get 100% red fuming nitric acid.
@RodentSaurus ahh - I already knew that method, but I just thought that it was going to make like 60-65% nitric acid.... well, thank you for your knowledge :)
Is there a way to make it from asprin?

LOL, why does it have to be stored in a quiet place? BTW can this same method be used to produce TNT?

I thought that it was impossible to make nitric acid (HNO3) become more than 68%???
