I completely agree with this. I get so pissed that I haven't been able to give blood since I started being sexually active. When I was in high school I donated 4 times and then when I was in the service I donated once, but now I can't donate at all despite getting REGULAR tests done to prove. If anything heterosexuals are MORE at risk because they don't get these standard tests done to prove that they have nothing going on, it's ridiculous! Also I wanted to give bone marrow, can't do that either

If these test come back that the blood is un-give-able, they just wasted quite a bit of money but if the blood is give-able they didn't waste any money. Why can't I give blood then? I, for one, am not allowed to donate blood because I'm slighty underweight (about 5% according to the - incredibly meaningful - BMI). It is true that I tend to get dizzy if I lose more than 1 l of blood, but don't tell me they're just being considerate. So, if they don't want the blood, I don't care. It's obvious they're not very much interested in really helping people, quite the same as with many other aspects of health care.

I feel you're pain... I am never going to be able to donate blood because of the rules stated.. I am a girl. I am straight. I am 19 years old. according to doctors I am ridiculously healthy. Why can't I give blood then? Because my father was military, both my parents lived in germany during the time you cant to give blood, on top of that, I lived in Belgium for 7 years during mad cow disease AND bird flu, during the time said that you can't. Now its accurate to ~20 days of infection, and still working on it. Like it or not it will be unbanned in the future.
There are (about) 2.6 million new HIV infections per year and 3080 is suddenly a significant number of people compared to that?

homosexual men in general shouldn't be banned. since blood gets tested multiple times anyways, i don't think the fda should not allow gay/bisexual men from donating blood. however, there should be some rules. there should be a questionnaire asking if they've had a new sexual partner in the past six months, and if the answer is yes, they shouldn't be allowed to give blood until it's been a year. i mean, i think it sometimes takes 6 months for HIV to show up in infected blood.

Just like the other folks who arent allowed, some may have contracted a bug form being in another country, got something in jail have STD and ect. The ban on gay blood was put in effect to protect people after two twins died from being issued a gay mans blood. Their family sued the hospital and it really was a tragedy but the media dosent remeber that either.

This definitely speaks to me because earlier this year I did not know it was a lifetime ban and I did not want to kill a person because of something I didn't know about my blood, so I did mark down "yes" on that question. I, for one, am not allowed to donate blood because I'm slighty underweight (about 5% according to the - incredibly meaningful - BMI). It is true that I tend to get dizzy if I lose more than 1 l of blood, but don't tell me they're just being considerate. So, if they don't want the blood, I don't care. It's obvious they're not very much interested in really helping people, quite the same as with many other aspects of health care.

I recently donated blood for the first time ever in Japan. They didn't ask for my sexual orientation nor did they care that I was a foreigner.
On the contrary, they treated me with great respect and kept thanking me throughout the process.
I don't think I'll ever be able to donate blood in the US, so I don't regret giving my blood to a foreign country.

Oh don't worry Tyler. I'm French and I can't donate blood either in this country. Apparently, if you've been out of the US for more than five years, you're not eligible to donate your blood. Even if you've spent these five years in a country that has a proven better health care system than the United States.
And I a gay friend of mine tried donating his blood, he was so hurt. That OBVIOUSLY homophobic behavior was so difficult to handle.
