@Marts1233 this aired the day before his 34th birthday January 25th 1959 he and Joanne hadn't celebrated their 1st annniversary yet and she was about 7 months pregnant with Nell at the time and he was very protective of her because she had miscarried during their honeymoon
I know he was a Jew, but he's still Saint Paul 2 to me, what a man, dedicating his life and wealth to his own personally created kid's charity for the terminally ill here in Ireland and beyond, and encouraging us all to get along :)
06:29 When Mr Paul Newman said, "I wish they bring back LIVE television", I concurred with Mr. John Daley when her said, "Amen to that. Amen to that."
I got away from watching television because the influx of reality shows. I refuse to wrap and center my life around television shows. I stopped watching rabbit ears TV about 6 months before converter boxes were required because I did not find programs worth watching. Live television with good writing is what is needed ie: Jackie Gleason.
duh he met Joanne in their agents office in 1952 when they were cast in the 1953 production of the play picnic they appeared in their first film together before they were married but it The Long Hot Summer was released after they were married she had conceived their first child on the set of the above mentioned film but miscarried on their honeymoon so nell was a happy surprise because they'd not been trying again and Joanne later supposedly said she got pregnant with nell on purpose
Paul Newman started out with the New York "Actors' Studio" It was his work on Broadway that got him to Hollywood to star in Hud, it is also where he met Joann Woodward.
sorry i'm behind on this, but i didn't know that newman was a 'legitimate stage actor' before hollywood. interesting.... hey, you learn something new everyday :) and man he is one gorgeous human being, i agree, you wouldn't really entitle the majority of actors now with 'THE hollywood hunk'-look like back then
and does anyone else notice that in those times the MAJORITY of male actors were under 6' and now the MAJORITY are over 6'???
actually his 34th birthday was the day after this episode aired and the Play sweet bird of Youth opened March 10th 1959 at which point Joanne was 8 months pregnant and happily waiting for Nell to arrive
yeah exactally when this aired Janurary 25th 1959 he and Joanne were also getting ready to celebrate their 1 year wedding anniversary and had every right to be excited that her pregnancy was going well as she had miscarried their first child on their honeymoon the year before so Nell was an angel sent to heal their hearts thanks for the post
what totally freaks me out- and this clip shows it @ 4:35 -especially Arlene - the Ladies are always given the flipping tie-down masks- when anyone with brains would have to admit that a set of "glasses" type mask with temple arms to go on the ears would be far more easy to slip under the HAIR DO...it is simply retarded to tie the thing over the made-up Hair style - so utterly stupid ,
Paul Newman was one of the most beautiful men I have ever seen; I once saw him as a passenger on an airplane I was taking and nearly fainted at the beauty of his eyes. He was deep in conversation with the then Governor of California, Jerry Brown.
How nice to see a current hot star like Niven, of "Around The World in Eighty Days" fame, shake hands with a real face of Hollywood's future, Paul Newman.
That man stayed hot until the day he died, what a hunk! And his acting talent matched his looks (IMO) and he had one of the more stable Hollywood marriages. He also put his money where is mouth was and kept a low profile in show-business--a rarity. We will never see his kind again. RIP Paul.
I've noticed that whenever Dorothy Kilgallen seems to be particularly taken by a guest she always clasps her hands as they make their exit, as she does here.
Gil Fates claims that in this 1959 game David Niven's mask slipped enough for him to see Paul Newman, but Niven continued playing the game, because he did not recognize Newman! That's odd: I didn't know that Niven lived in a cave in those days.
That IS a little odd. Maybe "see" is a relative term. I mean, if he saw a shape for a half-second and was dazzled by the light, it might not help much.
I suppose Paul Newman was, in the WML slang of the era, a trifle owlish here, but you would think that he would come to their minds quicker --- even in 1959. He appeared in 4 (count em 4 ) movies in 1958:
Rally 'Round the Flag, Boys! .... Harry Bannerman
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof .... Brick Pollitt (love the name)
That is one handsome man.

and by the way, referring to the 'tall gene', those in the 5'7" - 5'9" are considered SHORT these days, which is pretty harsh i think ...
in those days the best of them were in this range: sinatra, kelly, astaire, newman .... i could go on but i'll stop haha anyone agree though?! :)

@ApoloExpress Short ? No. The average height for an american male is 5'9.5.
