A lot of parodies of this ad. Everything from the crash test dummies (excuse me, do you wear your safety belt) to even John Madden in an ACE Hardware Commercial (excuse me, is that ACE Hardware semi-gloss paint?).
@Lalo3001 There's a great music video segment on Beavis & Butt-Head where they're watching a Janet Jackon video, and in the video Janet and a bunch of her friends are driving down a desert road when they run into these two dudes wearing jeans and hitch-hiking. Butt-head goes, "Excuse me, are those bunghole boys you're wearing?"
LOL!!! What cool memories from the 80s! I remember this commercial as if it were shown last night.
BTW: There's a funny parody of this commercial that features John Madden waiting by the side of the road with a bucket of paint. The same girl drives up and offers him a ride in her Ferrari. this was for ACE Hardware Stores.
To have remembered this so clearly over 20 years later, this must have been one of the most memorable commercials of all time! But... is the moral of the story that if you're wearing bugle boy jeans, you won't get picked up?
@EricLFarrell The point of the ad is that she was only interested in the aesthetic of the jeans, not the guy. Usually in commercials the idea is that if you wear the item being advertised then success will come your way. But this commercial is ironic, because the subject (the guy) is suddenly put in the background from the jeans (the actual desired item). The commercial messes with our expectations.
my sister did this to me once and left me at the gas station down the road from our house. it's only fair to be a little perturbed by this commercial.
Fucking hell. I remember that ad as if it was on just last week. They played it so much back then, especially on MTV and I must have heard everyone in my 8th grade class make fun of it every two seconds. One of those things that stick in your mind in an almost photographic manner. What's even more embarrassing is that it actually works because it's so damned cheesy!

OMG! I remember this! Been a lonnnng time since I saw it...however,
I thought the ad originally ran on TV around 1990-91? I'm probably wrong,
but I remember that the rock band Genesis spoofed that ad in one of their
music videos off of the "We Can't Dance" album that was released in 1991...
they chose to do so because at that time it was a recent hit in pop-culture.

The concept for this commercial was actually thought up by the company's founder Bill Mow. The guy was a big fan of Ferraris.

The man in the Bugle Boys was Ron Goldman, the one that got murdered with Nicole Simpson.
7Dunaway7 1 year ago
@7Dunaway7 BTW, did they ever catch the killer? Didn't Nicole's husband swear he'd track that killer down if it was the last thing he did? :-S
