  • Windowception!

  • Is it possible to download an illegal copy of an operating system, mount it to a virtual hard disk eg (:G) and then select boot from :G drive in the virtual machine? Will it work?

  • @MontyBurns1865 No that is not possible you need to boot the host machine before you boot the virtual machine

  • @MontyBurns1865 yes it is.or you could just download the operating system in .iso format and go to cd, capture .iso image and select the file, exactually what i did.

  • WHAT CD ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!?

  • Can you run a virtual pc within a virtual pc inception style? How many layers deep can you go?

  • @lostn65 Not to my knowledge.

  • God damn!!!!! My copy of windows 7 has been whoring around. (Lol, I mean the CD has been used so many times.) I'm too lazy to call in and ask for more registraaaarrrsss! So I can't use this program and i'm pissed. 'Nuff said :D

  • WHAT CD!

  • Congratulations! You did a fantastic job. You used almost the full 10 minutes, that means you tried giving as much information as possible on a complicated (yes, for beginners!) but exciting subject. Im at the point right now (3-30-11) where I NEED to learn how to use this app, and as usual with computers in general, new subjects feel like mining into a hard rock... just a tough learning curve... So I will watch this video several times and I may ask you some questions if you don't mind?

  • @MrSeinfeldFan2 Sure, ask away.

    Thanks

  • Wait... so you need Windows XP Mode to run Virtual PC?

  • @LtSurge659 No. Windows XP Mode is a license to run Windows XP on a Windows 7 Professional or better machine using Virtual PC. You can use Virtual PC on just about any Windows desktop machine. On Windows 7 you can run Virtual PC without utilizing Windows XP but you still need a valid Windows licence inside the Virtual PC machine buit it doesn't have to be Windows XP, it could be Windows Server for example.

    Thanks

  • @saturnalliance

Okay... I got it to work, but I can't seem to get Additions. I was told to look for the Action Menu while the Virtual Machine was initialized, but all I have as options are: "Sleep" and "Close".

This is frustrating because everyone is telling me to "GO TO ACTION MENU" but no matter what I do those are the only options.

  • @LtSurge659 The Action menu is not part of Virtual PC on Windows 7. There are no additions to add to my knowledge in Windows 7.

  • @saturnalliance

Well, I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate x64, running Virtual PC and that's what I got... I needed Internet Explorer to successfully download the update for Virtual PC, etc.

After some trial and error, it was working and I successfully installed Windows XP + SP3. However, I am unable to share files and this is something I need. I was told that "Additions" was needed to make a Shared Folder so I'm stuck! Thank you for answering me btw

  • @LtSurge659 Have a look at virtualbox(dot)org as an alternative. It allows you run 64 bit clients which Virtual PC doesn't.

    Thanks

    Robert

  • *thumb drive

  • can i use a Flash drive/ theb drive instead of a cd/dvd??

  • @MrFallout396 Nope. Virtual PC doesn't support USB. Look at Virtual Box from Sun as an alternative.

  • When I Create A New Virtual Machine It Says 0 MB Memory,How Can I Increes The Memory...? Please Fast Reply. Thanks

  • @fahimtahir123 How much memory does the host machine have? If you have too little memory in the host machine to run Windows and Virtual PC you can't have Virtual Machines. You should have > 1 GB of RAM in you host machine to start with.

  • I don't think so

  • can you have a pc running a virtual pc running a virtual pc?

  • @vawriss3 I don't believe so but never tried to do as never really required.

  • @vawriss3 I don't believe so but never tried to do as never really required.

  • can i test viruses on it?

  • @sciman001 Yes but there is a chance you could get that virus on the actual computer.

    But the chances are low

  • @sciman001 Yes but it won't give you 100% protection. There is still a chance that it can infect you host system. Thus I would not test any virus on a production machine.

    Thanks

    Robert

  • its says reboot and select proper divice please help!!!

  • @ali18434 Sounds to me like the virtual hard disk hasn't been configured correctly. Have a look at the settings to ensure it is. Ensure that you have linked you local CDROM to the virtual machine and there is a no bootable disk in there.

    Thanks

    Robert

    director(at)ciaops(dot)com

  • @ali18434 You have to Have a cd of Your System A say google it Burn it on a cd and turn in to your computer

  • i havent got a cd for windows 98 does some one have an idea how i can use virtual pc without de cd?

  • @basje56 You can use an ISO image of a CD with Virtual PC thus avoiding the need to have physical media. However if you haven't got a copy of Windows 98 you are going to have to procure one from somewhere.

  • is this leagle? haha its like downloading a computer. doesn't make alot of since til you see it. hahaha

  • Hi saturnalliance, can I make the virtualpc have a different operating system than my real one? Because I have a program that doesn t work on my real pc

  • @libyanballa Yes a VirtualPC can have a completely different OS on it. It is like new hardware.

    Thanks

    Robert

    ciaops(dot)com

  • @whtisurproblem Sure but it doesn't entirely eliminate the chances of the host machine becoming infected. It is less likley but still possible.

    Thanks

    Robert

    ciaops(dot)com

  • @pop00popOOpop It will consume 12GB in total. 6GB in your local hard disk in its own directory and 6GB on the virtual PC Hard disk, which also resides as a single file on your hard disk in teh virtual hard disk file. Again think of the virtual PC as a completly seperate PC that is hosted on your machine with different hard disk, OS, etc.

    Thanks

    Robert

    ciaops(dot)com

  • @pop00popOOpop No. A virtual PC is like a completely new clean PC with no applications. You would need to install whatever applications on the Virtual PC you require.

    Thanks

    Robert

    ciaops(dot)com

  • Why cant I enter the internet when am in virtual pc.

  • @crazykid313131 MAke sure your virtual network card is connected to the network card on the host machine. Do this via the settings. If it is set to local only it is not connected outside the viryual environment.

    Thanks

    Robert

    ciaops(dot)com

  • will this work on windows 7 64bit ?

  • @domalot5450 Provided you install the correct version of Virtual PC onto Windows 7, basically yes it will.

    Thanks

    Robert

    ciaops(dot)com

  • could i do anything else to it? Download,Play games, etc?

  • @rainingducks1 Just about anything you could on a normal PC. Things that require good video maybe an issue. It also won't be as fast as a normal PC.

    Thanks

    Robert

    ciaops(dot)com

  • @rainingducks1 Yes but if any of them have a virus, your computer isn't 100% safe from it, there is still a possibility it will infect your actual PC

  • Fuckin g shit, Im notting getting anything..I installed windows virtual pc(that one that comes with xp mode), and when I click on it it just open a fucking folder named virtual machines..WTF??? I dont get it...can someone explain..Id like to know whats happening before try the virtual pc 2007..

  • can i use the pc on my windows xp home edition?

  • @ballr4lyfe The Microsoft download site doesn't say it is support but that doesn't mean it won't run. Try it and see but don't be surpised if it won't allow you to install.

    Thanks

    Robert

  • @saturnalliance I use Windows XP Home and it works perfectly!

  • I have a quick question. The current version of Virtual PC says it only supports windows 7. Is that a fact? If so, where can I find a version that works on vista?

  • My just says Client mac address (on the screen shown at 3:280 and does nothing....

  • Make sure you have attached your host DVD to the virtual to allow it to boot from there via CD | Use Physical Drive D. You can also use an ISO from that menu. You will obviously need a bootable ISO or DVD as well.

    Thanks

    Robert

  • Nevermind,I found out,My computer isn't a windows 7 like it's supposed to be to run the program.

  • amatuers lol

  • Virtual PC does not always protect you from viruses.

  • Agreed. Nothing is ever going to give you 100% certainty against viruses and security threats apart from having the PC turned off.

If you want to play with viruses do it on a stand alone machine with a stand alone internet connection that you can afford to reformat. even then it is never a good idea to invite these things onto a system because you just never know what could end up on there. Once a machine gets infected you are never going to be 100% sure it's clean.

  • @saturnalliance If you have a pc without internet connection, and you watch only movies (you bought) on it there won't be a single virus...

  • @MakeMeKing09 why not?

  • so it sounds like if i get this can i down lode normal softwear on a Virtual PC if i get something like a virus by useing the internet on it will it get through to the real pc

  • If you use a virtual PC which is on a real PC then they share the same network card. If either are not secured correctly a virus or malware can exploit the fact thatthe machines are on the same network so to speak and potentiall infect either/both machines.

Simply because you use a virtual PC doesn't remove the need for good security practices at all.

    Thanks

    Robert

  • dang DX for a min there i thought there was going to be a easy way out of not geting a virus. there isent a easy way out to not get a virus is there DX

  • Using virtualization will reduce your chances of getting infected but it will never eliminate it. That is same with anything once you connect to the Internet. There is always a risk, just up to you how much risk you can live with.

    Thanks

    Robert

  • It say here.

on my ipconfig [ virtual pc ] [vista home ]

im nt connected to my ethernet ? .

bt on my virtual pc settings ..

    i put my adapter ..

    bt still somehow .

    nt connected

  • Have you installed the Virtual PC additions onto your virtual PC? Apart from that all I can suggest is u try doing a google search for further help.

    Thanks

    Robert

  • Oh okay.

    I will try :)

    Thanx btw .

  • Erm .

I follow ur step on networking.

    bt still .

    networking problem ?

    How ?

  • Ensure that you are connected to the correct network adapter. Make sure all adapters are enabled. Ensure you IP addresses are set correctly or obtain via a DHCP via IPCONFIG at the command prompt. Make sure that you have configured the virtual network to connect to an outside network not LOCAL ONLY.

    Thanks

    Robert

  • You know you have to make the Virtual pc use RAM, is the RAM always in use even when the virtual pc is turned off or does it only use the RAM when it's turned on the virtual machine?

  • When you shut down a virtual machine the RAM in use by the Virtual machine is released. To see this run task manager and watch the memory usage when you start up and shut down a virtual machine.

If the virtula machine is started and there is not enough free RAM you will get an error is another example of this dyanmic memory usage.

    Hope that helps

    Thanks

    Robert

  • alright thank you :) thought i'd ask because i wasn't sure or not ^^

  • I have an idea~!

download a virtual PC and download a virtual PC on THAT virtual PC then use the virtual PC on THAT virtual PC to download ANOTHER virtual PC.

an so on and so forth

  • Tried it. Can't be done. Firt virtual machine sknows it is virtual. Maybe is you firstly use VMWare, then Virtual PC on HyperV.

    Thanks

    Robert

  • THank for the tut

  • i installed xp ultimate

  • Can i use an .iso Image thats located in my hard-drive?

I got one but when i start it in Virtual PC it says loading windows..... Then it says faild to start from: Win32/boot/_____.exe

And at the bottom it says you are trying to run a 64 bit OS on a CPU that cant handle it ( not exact words) but my Host PC is a 64 bit, and help, i also copyed the iso to a disk if it helps?

  • Virtual PC does not support 64 bit operating systems even if Virtual PC is installed on a 64 bit host. To do this you will need something like Microsoft Hyper V.

    Thanks

    Robert

  • you are wrong you need to download Virtual PC 2007 64 bit if you have 64 bit os i think he has a 64 bit os but he downloaded Virtual PC 32 bit

  • Playing on a computer...on a computer amazing! :P

  • @ilikepie55901 just like that world of world of warcraft emulator where you play a guy playing WoW

  • @mysticdarkrai135 haha! I saw that video

  • can u get for example, the bsod on virtual pc without it infecting your actual pc???

  • Yes, you can BSOD a virtual PC and it will not affect the host machine. However if the virtual PC gets infected with a virus then it is possible for transmission of that virus to the host PC just like any other PC on your network.

  • i wonder if there are ones for Mac OS, linux, and others. would be pretty good if you could find that. =D

  • There are virtualization packages for all platforms these days.

    Thanks

    Robert

  • where can i download free OS image file?

my m.virtual pc is useless without it. T.T

  • you dont need to be worried about the ram if you have less ram its a no problem y6ou can just turn off the virtual machine and you get all of your ram to your window that means you can turn it off if you are going to play a game which needs alots off ram

  • can i use this software to emulate windows 98 32bit on my windows xp pro 64bit 4gb RAM?

so i could play counterstrike because my OS is the only that doesnt work with counterstrike.

  • I believe so. VIrtual PC is a 32 bit app that will run on XP x64. It will only allow 32 bit emulations though but for Windows 98 that should be ok. Beware however that the virtual video driver and hard disk access speed may not be good enough to play the software you speak of.

  • is it possible for viruses in virtual pc to get into my physical computer?

  • Yes it is possible. Firstly you are likley to connect the virtual machine via your network card to the Net. if your host PC is not secure it is therefore possible for a virus on the guest OS to infect the host OS. Secondly, like all software there are vulnerabilities which may be exploited by malicious software.

A virtual environment does give so isolation but it is not a replacement for good security practices.

  • ok thank you

  • nope

  • hi guys is it good to increase the RAM for the guest pc for my RAM that is 496 MB?

  • The minimum RAM recommended to run a virtual environment is at least 1GB. That allows 512MB for the base OS and the rest for the virtual environment. Anything less and there will be lost of paging of memory to disk which will make both machines very slow.

  • I'm useing an iso i downloaded. It is Ubuntu v9.04 desktop i386 CD-iso FINAL. I have pressed capture .iso and started restarted it. It tells me to select language so i do so. Then it says istall and i press enter and some stuff pops up then it is a blank black screen. Do i need to burn the iso to a cd or something?

  • Virtual PC is works best with Windows since it is from Microsoft. It "should" work with other OS's but it may not. Sounds to me like a video card issue. Maybe Ubuntu can be started in another mode? Failing that try googling virtual pc and ubuntu together to see if anyone has a solution.

  • I got it to work up to the point of installing it now. It has been stuck at 70% for 1 day now. I'm stuck.

  • can som1 give me an iso for ubuntu plz?

  • it wont give me the option of "use phisycal CD drive..." what do i do?

    help plz....

  • Check the settings for the virtual machine under CDROM. There is a check box you can change that may make the CDROM available. Failing that you wil need to convert your CD to an ISO file image and mount that from the same menu.

  • My PC doesn't have sound, so I don't know what you are saying in this video -.-

How do I get a Windows 98 on my Virtual PC with the largest RAM possible?

  • i can't i get a message that says

CLIENT MAC ADDR: 00 03 FF FD FF FF GUID: 12BE22DE-8E99-634F-AB5C-FCDE281752B7

    DHCP:.........

THEN I DID WAT U SAID ON THE VIDEO BUT I STILL CAN'T CAN U HELP

  • You haven't go a CD that boots in your machine or you haven't gone CD | Use Physical CD. You need a boot CD like what comes with Windows XP or Vista. Windows 95 or 98 are not boot CD's. If you insert a boot CD into a machine it will boot up from the CD rather than the hard disk. Since your Virtual PC hard disk has no operating system you need a boot CD to get the operating system onto the virtual PC hard disk.

  • Hi, DO you know were I can download other OS ISOs? Instead of 93 and Ubuntu? Like, 98, 2000, 2003, whatever.

    Thanks!!

  • Do a google search. I know Microsoft has eval ISO's available as well.

  • im trying to put on Windows 95 on Virtual PC. When its booting it goes to this called MAC ADDR: what ever and it keeps going ......./ and when i try and click on phiscally CD it wont work...any help?

  • Most Windows 95 CD are not bootable. They required a floppy disk to boot first, load the DOS CDROM drivers and then for the CD to load. You will need to secure a bootable Windows 95 CD or located a Windows 95 boot floppy disk.

  • actually, i think ive got the problem, what kind of disc do you need? the one that boots or something and you install the operating system on?

  • You require a CD that is bootable. Most Windows operating system original CD's are like this in that if they are in the CD drive and you turn on the system it will boot the CD rather than the hard disk. Normally you insert one of these CD's into a blank system and it install the operating system on the blank Hard disk. Virtual PC is no different you need to get an operating system onto the blank virtual hard disk for it work.

  • when click start it says not enough memory to host what sall i do help plz

  • Go into the settings for the Virtual PC and select memory. Decrease the amount of memory for that Virtual PC. Alternatively, close other applications, apart from Virtual PC you may be running on your PC.

  • Using VM means I can mess with all kinds of smitfraud infections and nothing happens to my normal pc? :P

  • Don't overlook the fact that clever malware can traverse machines. If you virtual PC is connected to the Internet and so is the normal PC then it is possible you could get you normal PC infected if something gets onto the Virtual PC. This is just like the situation with any normal PC.

Virtual PC does allow you to set the network card to local only that way it is "not connected" to the normal PC so it is safer.

Whenever you deal with malware you need to be really careful.

  • Thanks allot for the information. :)

Just formatted my computer and I don't want to format it again when something gets through Virtual PC.

  • No problems, better safe than sorry especially on a production PC. If you want to fiddle around get an second hand PC on Ebay or something (they're cheap) and use that. That's certainly going to better than trying in a Virtual PC on a production PC.

You still need to be careful with the nasty stuff as you really have no idea what it maybe doing in the background unless you are REALLY, REALLY careful.

  • i installed virtual pc on my windows vista home premium and i everything went great but when it got to the part when it said to put boot device in or something i clicked the physical cd and then hit enter but then it went back to another screen and loaded again with the boot screen then went back to the boot device screen again and it goes over and over and i cant seem to fix the problem maybe i could have some help in this? if you could it would be greatly appreciated!

  • You need to install an operating system on your virtual PC. This means the virtual PC has to be booted from a bootable CDROM, typically a Windows OS CD like that for Vista or XP. Once the Virtual machine boots form the CD you need to install a complete operating on the virtual PC for it work.

When you create a new virtual PC it is a like a new PC with a blank hard disk. It does not come with any OS and thus requires the installation of something to get the Virtual PC working.

  • Comment removed

  • and we can run older pc games that require win 95/98 rite that vista screws up

  • Correct. You can install just about any OS into a Virtual PC and it runs. It is a great option for games like you said and that is what I use it for as well some times. Only problem is the video isn't that great in a virtual pc but for most old games it works fine.

  • well someone says it can work on vista home premium is that true

  • Yes Virtual PC can be installed on XP or better systems as a host.

  • im confused man

  • You can install the Virtual PC software onto a Vista machine. Using this you can run just about any operating system. if you install the Virtual PC software onto a Windows XP machine you can also run just about any operating system including Vista.

  • I cannot get the mouse to leave the window, how can i get the mouse to leave the virtual window ?

  • Hit the right ALT button. I think you find it says that in the lower left of the Virtual PC window. Again, to release the mouse hit the right ALT. If it is a Windows virtual PC image then make sure you install the Virtual PC additions from the file menu so that you don't have to keep hitting the ALT key.

  • Im trying to run windows 7 on Virtual PC. But when after I click capture ISO image and click the windows 7 ISO my computer shuts down and It says something like windows did not shut down succesfully and then it has options to run with safe mode or command prompt.

  • I have not run Windows 7 on Virtual PC so don't know the compatibility. However, when you create a virtual machine make sure you select Vista type operating system. I would try maybe assigning more RAM to the virtual machine and perhaps your ISO is corrupt. If you burn the ISO to a DVD can you read the files?

  • Hi ! I have encountered another problem.

I cant get anything that involves display adapting devices to work. I think i simply dont have any display adapters :P maybe you could help me again please ? my goal in this attemp to set up a fully functional vista computer is to simply play video games through the new advanced directX v10 that microsoft has released ! I heard it has a big influence on game's graphcis which is very exciting for me :)

    Thanks in advanced ;)

    yawikflame

  • Virtual PC only has a very basic graphics card. It is not really designed for graphical applications it more designed as a software testing environment. You can try adjust the settings in the Virtual machine but don't be surprised if you only get the basics when it comes to video.

  • yawikflame, Vista is already a CPU-hogging piece of shit. Running it over a virtual machine won't help it one bit. Your best bet is to install Vista into a freshly created partition. And I think you mean Direct X 11. Good luck.

    =]

  • True. Virtual PC is not the environment for running your primary OS. However, it is handy if you want to run multiple OS's without additional hardware. To get better performance HyperV or VMWare maybe a better bet.

  • sorry for asking does VMWARE or VPC changes your partiion table and causes datalosing? i share my computer with my brothers and sisters, so i need my harddisk intact!:)

  • VPC is a completely independent machine on the host hardware. It does not make any changes (to my knowledge) of the hosts partition table. Simply imagine it as another PC on your network.

  • I'm using windows XP and i'm trying to have a windows vista operating system through that software. I managed to set the computer up with all the installation process but when i came back the next day when i tried to load it up it said something like:"there's not enough memory from the host" or something like that. if you could help me please i would really appriciate it !

    Thanks in advanced ;)

  • Change the properties of the Vista Virtual machine and allocate more RAM. You will have to shut down the virtual machine in order to do this. Just keep increasing the RAM allocated to that Vista Virtual machine until it runs.

  • Thanks it now works !

But..I now have another problem :)

i cant here anything in the vista =/ it says I am missing an audio output device (my original for the XP is:"Realtek HD". i tried downloading some older versions of it but they are so old that their donwload rates are pretty close to 0 bytes per second =/ if you could help me(again) i would really appriciate it :) btw i wrote this Reply from vista :P

  • NEVERMIND !!!!!!! WOOHOO !!!! i got sound :) :)

Thanks for my first problem again :)

    yawikflame

  • my dad wont let me download it. Hes so stupid and he says that it might wreck the computer

  • aww kiddy still dont have his own cp?

  • just hide the Virtual pc on a invisible folder...

  • everything from microsoft is safe to download right? no viruses?

  • do you need to be an administrator to run this program?

  • You need to have admin rights on the host machine to install the Virtual PC program. Once installed you do not need to be administrator of the host machine. Any rights on the virtual machine your create is up to how you set up that virtual machine.

  • It is always recommended you have the latest version. As it is free I would recommend upgrading, however you do not need to have it to get a virtual environment operational.

if you only have 150MB or RAM available to a virtual machine your host system does not have enough RAM as virtual PC requires part of your system RAM. You should have a host system with at least 1GB of RAM to run virtual machines. The more RAM the better on the host machine.

  • You need a Windows 2000 original CD to install Windows 2000 software. If you don't have one then do a Google search.

  • Unless the Windows 98 CD is bootable (which it normally isn't) you will need to boot to a Win98 install floppy.

  • Yes. Use the Shared Folders options in the settings for that virtual machine to map a local directory to your Virtual PC.

  • How do you get the physical drive?

  • Not sure what you mean. The virtual PC Hard disk is simply a file (large) on the host machines physical hard disk. Because it is a file you can simply relocate it between any host machine running Virtual PC and have it operate. The whole idea with any virtual environment is that it is independent of the physical hardware.

  • If you download something with a virus using a virtual PC will your actual computer be infected?

  • If your Virtual PC is using the local lan adapter then yes it is possible. If the Virtual PC adapter is set to host only then the chances are much lower but that won't be the case since you are accessing the Internet. So my advice would be you need to take the virus precautions you would normally on any PC connected to the Internet.

  • is it possible to get better Graphic card? 4 mb its like nothing :(

  • Nope it is only designed for testing and running business apps not games. Try VMWare maybe the product from Sun.

  • yeah i just did :) thanks anyway.

  • I cannot get my Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 to work. Please can the author of this video contact me so I can explain the issue? Thanks!

  • Hey can u run Mac on the Virtual PC 2007?

  • No your can't. It currently only supports PC based systems including Linux and Windows. If in runs on x86 hardware then give it a try I have not tried that myself.

  • currently free LOL!

  • i have it but it will not let me use it

  • you need a windows nstallation disc to install and use windows.

  • IT Pretty cool one of the best things ive used

  • Generally a Windows 95 CD is not bootable. You will need to create a bootable Windows 95 or create a bootable ISO image. Back in 1995 the setup still came on floppy disks.

  • where do you suggest I get the windows xp files

  • If you want to run windows XP then you'll need a Windows XP CD. You can probably try the Microsoft site for an evaluation version (time bombed). Apart from that all I can suggest is you try a Google search.
