I can't stand that type of sharpener. I've seen them DESTROY edges. Anybody can make a blank spring steel machete ready for combat against meth-heads (zombies) with the use of just 3 DMT or other brand diamond sharpening stones and some water. I personally have a 7 piece kit with Japanese water stones, but I also own cutlery much finer than a machete.
I prefer the kukri design when talking about large knives. I think it looks cool and it's got an interesting sort of backstory and similar uses as a machete.
Cant find your knife sharpener? Or just too lazy to get your ass down to hardware store? If the blade is in need of sharpening and your stuck, use the bottom of an everyday mug or cup!
I know this video is old and you've probably learned this already, but for those of you who don't know, don't buy a sharpener thats in a "fixed" position. Every knife needs special attention when sharpening, especially when angles are considered, I keep my EDC knives at 40 degrees, and my cooking knives at 20. Buy a couple stones and a strop to get the best edge possible. If you aren't comfortable free handing it, get a spyderco sharpmaker
@AssumeTheFuzzySham actually that smiths sharpener works great, it's just not meant for sharpening a dull ass machete. i use mine to put a hair popping edge on many knives with many angles including a 17 degree razor. i can sharpen one knife with another knife. it just depends on how good you are.
You are one very pretty Filipina....and you love knives. That's awesome! Maybe I can hook you up with some of my custom scales for some of your knives. Check it out!
The technique I've been taught is to stroke along one side until you raise a burr on the other side, then grind the burr down for a sharp, even edge. Needless to say, this takes more skill at knife-sharpening than I can claim to have - never tried it on expensive blades, but I've gotten some good results on cheap kitchen knives. Takes a long time, though!
That thing your using is probably a piece of garbage when it comes to sharpening because, I've never seen it before and are you Chinese and what are you doing with so many knives
i was always taught for the paper test you do it at a diagonal angle so you dont have to hold the paper....but knowing me even if it does pass the paper test i never think its sharp enough
@Xolette I know it says "test" but how do you know if it's really sharp enough? You wreck the shit out of those pieces of paper, but it seems that this video was going to end with you proving your test with an actual beheading. Just saying that I feel like I was mislead.
@Petegrin1, lol...no worries, Mate. I do not believe in the living dead; I guess my sense of humor isn't too well understood. But I do know living flesh responds quite differently to edged weapons, than dead flesh. It wasn't me who made the statement about Zombies...lol!!!
If you really want to test your's and the blade's ability to decapitate the living dead, purchase a some pork shank with the bone. Hang the shank from a tree limb and with one good diagonal back hand, let it rip and see if you can sever through the tissue and bone. It's dead, so it will respond as dead flesh and bone. Living flesh responds differently.
lol you didnt use that sharpener correctly, sometimes you need to tilt it forward so the edge in caught in the crease of the carbide slates in the sharpener. I know this cause I have used the same sharpener before and it took some getting use to
Not surprised... :D Cold steel makes very decent machete's,good value for money. But the factory edges need a little more care than a quick touch-up. Took me ages to get a nice convex cutting edge on my CS kukri machete.
ya those scrape sharpeners just don't make the cut. Sorry, couldn't resist. Diamond stones or even diamond embedded sharpening steels do a pretty good job if you r not to serious about the process. The belt sander method works very well.
Yeah those sharpeners are only good for kitchen knives IMO or maybe some EDC knives for a quick touch up.Also you should place the sharpener on a stable surface so that you could apply even pressure. other than that grate vid ^.^
Aloha Xolette, I just bought a Cold Steel 18" Barong on sale for $11.99 including the sheath! It's in the mail, can't wait to get it! I'd eventually like a real one from the P.I. but this'll do for now. How do you like your's? Looks sweet. Thank you magandang dalaga
@Xolette I'll use mine in the yard trimming my coconut trees, and also when I go hiking and to harvest bamboo. Make me feel a tad more secure if I run into a wild pig. Thanks for the quick reply, you're the best Xolette! 8-)
That was a cute demonstration, but I would not want that kind of an edge on my machete unless I was doing very fine work. I want a much less sharper edge. In the field, if you would chop in a temperate climate (North America) that edge would roll too quickly. But you're really cute, so I enjoyed the presentation. For those of you that want a field machete, don't do this.
machetes aren't supposed to be shaving sharp... a thin edge on a big blade will either dull or chip immediately... which is why axes aren't shaving sharp and why you don't chop down trees with scalpels...
I personally feel like Cold Steel knives aren't sharp enough right out of the box. I usually take them to my sharpener to get the first edge then keep it up from there.
A chopping blade should be sharpened at less of an angle to a slicing blade, or the edge will quickly dull or snap. ;-)
Personally, I use one of those diamond embedded steel blocks, for getting a perfect edge. They're expensive, but well worth getting. They can even be used to re-sharpen scalpels! :-D
i love your throwing knife videos, im looking to get back into knife throwing again. i've been out of the game for a couple years now, Do you have any advice on what kind of knives i should get to start out with again? and if so where could i get em?
@MajorPain92911 I always recommend Flying Steel because they're american-made high quality knives-- they're more expensive but worth it. Watch my video "Review of Flying Steel" If you want a cheaper knife for spin throwing, I like the Bailey Boker Zeil knives. Cold Steel makes some throwers, but I find them too big for my liking.
try a Coticule stone (about 9000 grit) to sharpen but only after working the edge down with other wetstones then after the Coticule stone use a leather strop and some stropping compound, then you will have a razor fine edge on your knife, machete, sword etc.
There is apsolutely NOWAY you can have a sharp knife with a sharpener !!! The only way to sharpen any blade is with proper technique and japanese wetstones. i would sugestBreston 500 to reshape the edge, breston 1200 to remove shape the wire and Suehiro Rika 5000 for clean finish, finish with diamond spray to remove the burr and alling the wire. Thats IT ! Happy sharpening ;)
Xolette, Hi my name is DeWayne. I just wanted to say thank you. it is from your videos that I first learned of no spin knife throwing. I have thrown spin for many years but never knew of no spin. Now that is all i will throw. So thank you soooo much.
Nice machete. Keep in mind though, that you don't want to make your machete RAZOR SHARP. A semi-sharp utility edge is all that's needed for getting heavy duty tasks done without chipping or rolling the edge. I oversharpened my Kabar Kukri, and after an hour of wood chopping, I found a couple of nicks in the blade that had to be sharpened out.
You can sharpen it to a razor edge if you don't plan on doing such heavy duty tasks though.
Nope don't know him shilea is like chick or lady it's Aussie slang you could say but you got some cool vids I'm a noob at them I only got 3 up so far bottle cutting lol of all things

I haven't much experience with both I only have one small Coldsteel knife (superedge) and am waiting for a tanto bokken because of the knife laws in the Netherlands you can't carry big fixed blades like a dagger, tanto or Bowie
hi well i was wondering if you could make a throwing knife and show us how to make it bescause most people are looking for cheat ways to get stuff not stuuf that is so much
@abdo112000 I'm definitely not a knife maker. I'd check in with a EpicBladeTime-- he's made his own knives. I also saw an article on throwing.it on how to make them. If anything, a cheap set of butter knives can do the trick. Watch my Indoor Knife Throwing video.
I've used a similar sharpener on my knives and a few cheap swords and found it took a while to get them to be sharp due to the different angle of the original sharpen. For the cheaper sword and machetes it has taken over 150 strokes to get a razor edge.
Lol safer7, it is really hard to decapitate something. Bone is preety hard.

hi well i was wondering if you could make a throwing knife and show us how to make it bescause most people are looking for cheat ways to get stuff not stuuf that is so much

@abdo112000 I'm definitely not a knife maker. I'd check in with a EpicBladeTime-- he's made his own knives. I also saw an article on throwing.it on how to make them. If anything, a cheap set of butter knives can do the trick. Watch my Indoor Knife Throwing video.

protect that kitchen!!!!!! jk jk lol i love ur laugh
manorboi20 4 months ago
I've used a similar sharpener on my knives and a few cheap swords and found it took a while to get them to be sharp due to the different angle of the original sharpen. For the cheaper sword and machetes it has taken over 150 strokes to get a razor edge.
