This would've been better if the quality of the camera was better. I am only 13 and I'm learning to play this piece. I can definitely tell the contrast of the interpretation of both Lugansky's and Vadim's playing. All I can say is; well playing and the video would've been better if the camera was in better condition :)
Each time I loose the motivation to exercise the piano I just go on youtube and listen to this performance...Very very efficient! ^^ (I think it's like the 5th time I comment this video but I just fell in love with it haha :P)
I really like this interpretation. The pianist's rubato and dynamics really drive the descending figure in the left hand and push the music forward nicely while avoiding sounding rushed; quite the contrary to Lugansky's interpretation which keeps the left hand rock steady. Very nice.
What fascinates me is that this Russian composer can literally engineer such irrational impulsive emotional outburst improvisation into organized formal music. It's as if a paranoid articulating his wild fantasy nightmare, revealing the very agony that triggered unthinkable creativity.
This is by far my favorite rendition of this song....its perfect. To me at least, i dont know the technicalities of this song but I dunno...It gives this awesome "rolling" feeling that i haven't heard from other versions of this song. (Awful at describing things i know)
I've listened to quite a few videos of this song on youtube (i don't have a recording of it yet) and this has got to be the best interpretation and performance i've heard of it yet. I don't know what everybody's talking about about Lugansky
@kgklinkel it is very difficult to find the six moment musical, I mean all of them on a CD. I like this more than Lugansky, also like Jung Lin's moment 4 :-)
This is exceptionally good, tremendously difficult and well played.
I can play Rachmaninov but only 4 or 5 pieces well.
It's easy to criticize, more difficult to play. I'd be happy to listen to any of you play 4 or 5 Scarlatti sonatas & 2 Rach preludes - any chance you'd play live?
This piece isn't that difficult to learn... It's even sextuplets in the left hand nearly all the way through. Speed & volume without killing your left had are the main challenges to learning. Playing it well maybe a little more difficult ;)
Agree with the other comments that this version has more brooding interest, more menace and more beauty than the Lugansky version (which is probably more technically adept)
I've played through both, and I have to say, I think the Rachmaninoff is harder. The Beethoven piece has more right hand movement, which is usually easier to pull off than a lot of left handed movement. (as in the Rach) Also, the Rachmaninoff has some stuff with 'two against three' feel.. and there's lots of tough jumps to get to at that speed.
Vadim! A Bosendorfer! I learn on one of them, and the action is soo hard to control! To be able to play Rachaminov on that kind of piano means your a genius!
The Bösendorfer is the best piano in the world - light years ahead of Steinway who admit to using Yamaha actions for some 20 years now..
Whilst the Steinway has a sound which is universally liked, its build quality is nothing out of the ordinary.
The Bösendorfer is the 'supreme being' of grand pianos in every regard, but i you found the action too hard, its because someone before you wanted it that way. Bösendorfer actions are notably medium to light when they leave the factory.
What has happened to the rest of Moments? I'm fairly positive that few months ago there were all six, here, on YT - all from this home-session. Each was absolutely brilliant and, in my humble opinion, smoked thoroughly Pogorelich's interpretation which I have now. I don't like it very much and I would like to listen to Chaimovich! :-)
KlassikFan: Why did you remove No. 6 in C major from here? Yours was the only recording of it on YouTube and probably the finest live performance of it I've ever seen and heard. Please put it back!
Its kind of jazzy (sry for blaspheming :)) - perhaps due to the small room but I'd rather say because of the inspired, fiery, superb! playing which appears to be improvised.
I heard Lugansky's, which is brilliant and huge, like Titanic at sea, everything rolling downwards. This one though is like an eartquake and so eruptive, like birds escaping from the furious turbulent ground, striving upwards, mad happy when free, reaching for the sun. Maybe its in the accent of the rh notes idk
I like lugansky interpretation very mucho but i like this more for example at the beggining Vadim starts slower and then increase lugansky seems hurry in some way in others parts too. But maybe it's because lugansky is live.
Absolutely breathtaking. I loved it.

Probably shouldn't make this comparison, but this sounds eerily similar to Chopin's 'Winter Wind' etude.

@pianoman469 actually rach based the structure on the revolutionary etude (op. 10 no 12)

veeeeery nice. i'm starting to learn this piece myself. how much practice did you put in for this one?
classik305 2 years ago
He did not (as far as I know). I meant generally his
interpretation of Rachmaninov. I used to take it as
model until Lugansky, who sounds more "modern"
(to me). Your performance is, of course, excelent
and admirable. I just wanted to point out at my idol.
Wish you good luck!!

I didn´t mean to offend you. I just consider Luganskyś
performance the best (even better than Horowitz).
So your respond is right.

Horowitz recorded #4? That's news to me.

Of course, he did not. What I meant I have already explain in my answer to KlassikFan2007 (see there).
I am sorry to cause such misunderstanding. My apology.

The Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata Presto agitato is harder than this piece !!
smimo2 2 years ago
thats entirely subjective, i would personally put this piece harder than the Beethoven Moonlight Presto movement

NO, Slava -.- . MM4 is WAYY more difficult in technique.

i think that depends on what you end up going for with either piece..
IMO, MM4 would be harder, because of its demand for continuous buildup, even though it starts off pretty loud
