Is it ironic or intentional that Charbel sings of speaking only in Arabic while using a distinctly western musical scale infused here and there with Arabic maqam? Diversity in music, but uniformity of speech?? Hmmmmmm.
The charm of Lebanon, it's beauty and guts are derived from its ethnic diversity reflected in everything Leganese: languages, architecture, art, cooking, religions, education, politics...I can go on and on. Vive les Libanais, wallahi....no kidding.
I see this blend of spoken languages in Lebanon as a unique, beautiful phenomenon that is indicative of its people's willingness to embrace different cultures. Some feel this poses a threat to the continuity of the Arabic language in Lebanon, but I doubt it will ever be so due to its geographic location.
Moroccans, Tunisians & Algerians rarely say "Sabah El Kher". They say "Bonjour", and their interplay between Arabic & French expressions is much more obvious than what is in Lebanon.
