  • Wow! Doesn't get much better than that!

  • With the great singer-songwrtiter Rodney Crowell and world class lead guitarist Albert Lee singing backup harmonies; Emmy sounds just like an angel... I just love her to death!!!

  • Lovely song by a lovely woman

  • My darlin and I had the great privilege to see ELH and the original Hot Band. Over the years, we saw several installments of the band, and once, Emmy stalked onto the stage in high heels and that gorgeous black Gibson J who's fingerboard she could hardly reach due to late pregnancy. Reflecting, the only artists we've seen as much or more were Bob Dylan and James Taylor. Here on this sunny p.m., with my fuzzy people at my feet, I grin out loud. Not bad... Not bad too bad at all...

  • love you!

  • She looks INCREDIBLE here and sounds AWESOME TOO!!

  • @henricusregius Bluegrass....? She is a country-folf singer so far from bluegrass its pathetic.

  • Absolutely beautiful!

  • I'm not sure i can think of a single musician anywhere who wouldn't shake his/her head at all the negative energy y'all put up here. Leave it alone. You don't like it, that's cool, but why ya need to put down something that others honestly get a good feeling from? Leave it alone.

  • @rkoorse Excellent comment. Don Henley referred to this as "such a graceless age." Indeed, it is. Ugly, ignorant, and Mean... So many behave as if the world is just their video game and everybody else are just props. No language but filth, no politics but nihilism, no shame, pride, no (self) respect, no goals, no center, - empty as a new coffin - operating on a reptilian mid-brain and bouncing through the universe like a pinball.

  • I'm a massive Townes Van Zandt fan, and this is one of his best songs. There have been several good versions, but no-one sings it like Emmylou...she made it her own!

  • Why can't we have music like this anymore?

  • Good lord, I have to comment twice...I think this is my favorite song of all time, oh this Angel! :D

  • Emmylou does this song so much justice:D and it don't hurt to have the hot band behind her either! Rodney Crowell and Albert Lee!!

  • often lamented "Whiney" voice...??? Never heard that one before and being a singer myself, I can be quite the critic of someone's singing voice. If you don't like her timbre that's one thing but, whiney? Not even. Just about every singer has a spot in their range as they go up the scale, where they shift from their chest voice to what can be described as singing from your head. It can sound subtly annoying or obtrusive. Harris is the rare exception. A flawless voice; your taste or not.........

  • @jdubbiyou So you know it all.... your opinion is worth no more than anyone elses... it has nothing to do with "timbre". You make it up as you go, like lukethe dumbass.

  • @anjelina1940 you'd better take your meds now..........

  • @jdubbiyou What would you do if you didn't have this forum to spout off your stupidity...?

  • I think thats Rodney Crowell on backing vocals & acoustic. Anyone???

  • @Yameell That's Rodney, Buddy:D

  • Oh, sorry, Albert - Brit by birth, American by twang.

  • This is about music, not politics of the personal/egotistical sort. Emmylou Harris, flanked by Rodney Crowell and Albert Lee, embody some of the finest American musical talent ever to grace a stage, and I'm grateful to 1000magicians for uploading this.

  • there are memories behind her eyes realted to this song...you can hear it in her voice.

  • This is so perfect ..i love TVZ and this version ...just compare it to all the crap nowdays...no comparison

  • Emmylou is really Feeling this song............Great Job :)

  • I had the great good fortune to tour with Emmy back in the early '80s. Got to hear her sing this repeatedly, night after night. I was just a lighting guy but I was on the side of the stage every night. She's such a sweetheart. And beautiful. I was very lucky. N.

  • @7561125 What a lucky man to get to see emmylou every show , you saw country music history at its best you were there. Envy .

  • Emmy Lou is still still absolutely gorgeous and has the voice of an angel.

  • The lady is as beautiful today as she was when she sang this one! She's has always' been beautiful and what a great voice.

  • Thing ya need to gang.......is watch and listen to this one ......and hunt down the CMT video -right here on U-tube -- "Pancho and Lefty " with Willie and Merle...and run 'em back to back and REALLY enjoy the tune

    Be safe y'all

  • An Angel right on earth...

  • Aetherial.

  • She gives me chills....this is a wonderful version.

  • I have always loved this woman......I still do.

  • @Aquapello1967 Quote -" I have always loved this woman- I still do "Hey are you Rodney Crowell ???? He said those EXACT words in a TV documentary several years ago.

  • my dream woman. she'd sing me awake each day, and I'd cook her breakfast. TOWNES. IS. GOD!

  • Sung with absoluterly no feeling... sounds like reading the weather report.

  • @lukinbactex Oh dear, oh dear..........

  • Comment removed

  • Love this video.

  • actually his name was Townes Van Zandt, the original writer of this song.... a lot of the bakersfield/california country singers at the time covered his songs cause he had no interest in fame but wrote amazing songs.

  • I was turned on to EmmyLou Harris music in 1979 by my cute, fun friend JoAnn. I have enjoyed 30 more years of EmmyLou music as a result of this introduction.

I haven't seen JoAnn since 1981 but I still cherish our all too brief friendship. As you go through life, cherish the time you get to spend with the high quality people you meet. You will appreciate them always.

  • she butchered this song nobody does it better then merle an willie

  • @lylioja i agree 100%

  • A song written from the soul, and a perfect voice to convey it... Thanks for posting! WOW!

  • @jhffmn1 Actually, Emmylou didnt right this song, she covered it for her album in 1977. A man named Van Zandt wrote this song in 1972. It's a good song for sure. I'm not trying to sound like a smart ass,I just wanted to let you know who wrote it.

  • @sup3rduty350 I know buddy :-) He wrote it from the soul, Emmy Lou conveyed it perfectly was all I was sayin... Willie didn't do to bad a job with it either!

  • as always, perfection. x

  • Thanks so much for the Post. Loved it. Saw her do this song live manya time. I am blessed.

  • Yes, in my opinion one of the most distinguishable (top 25) voices in modern times. (World wide) again, just my opinion. .......Others on the list (distinguishable) JR (Cash) .....Willie.....Bob Dylan.......Can yall name a few?

  • @montanamuzik2

Neal Young, Axel Rose, Al Green,

  • Emmylou Harris has a beautiful voice and is one of if not the most beautiful woman on earth

  • Emmylou ....la tua voce , mi accompagnera' , ci accompagnera' sempre ...laggiu' ....

...nella Valle dei Grandi Spiriti....la mi ritrovero' ...

  • Perfection in sight and sound !.

  • Incredible

  • what a beautiful song. very nice cover of townes song

  • I see her everytime she comes to SLC, UT.....fabulous!

  • she had the face and voice of an angel and has since blossomed into a goddess

  • John Ware - drums

    Glen Hardin - piano

    Albert Lee - lead guitar

    Hank DeVito - steel guitar

    Emory Gordy - bass

    Rodney Crowell - rhytym guitar

I think I have them all right. There were some changes over the years, but this is the #1 Hot Band.

  • Albert Lee on the electrified 6.

    Who's on steel?

  • aye an she can sing aswell.... buoys.

  • J'adore !!

  • Some angels ain't from Montgomery.

She can sure make a room get pretty!

  • two words to anyone who likes this - gram parsons

  • Rodney Crowell best male voice to harmonize with Emmy, but that fucking british telecaster player (forgot his name, shame on me!) does it well too!

  • @BALKISDREAMER The gentleman on the Telecaster is none other than Mr. Albert Lee, Country picker extraordinaire. He was in Eric Clapton's Band for approximately 4-5 years and plays on 3 different albums by Clapton. It's amazing that a Brit could be one of the greatest Country guitar players of all time...!

  • Love that voice

  • LOVE HER DOING THIS SONG(PONCHO&LEFTY).AWESOME!!!

    MILLER BUGGINS

  • wasn't she just so gorgeous and beautiful and a voice to die for ? No wonder the band was hot.

  • @pedalman "Wasn't she?..." STILL IS so gorgeous and beautiful! Even more so. There aren't too many who can rock a silver mane the way she does! She only gets better and better.

  • @pedalman Terrible.... sounds like cats dieing under the porch.

  • @lukinbactex I think she has a very different AND distinctive voice a bit like Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton ....you either love them or hate them but there is no denying they all have dominated their portion of country music history.

  • @pedalman For waht its worth - I totally agree. :-)

  • @lukinbactex You are not nice...

  • @jomitast Just honest.... everyone has the right to their opinion, since I have been a musician, a singer and have been involved in country music and associated with many country artists, Marty Robbins, Ray Price, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Johnny Horton, Eddie Cochran,Roy Obinson.... the list is endless. So I have a real appreciation for "good" music... in my humble opinion.

  • @lukinbactex I have to apologize, I must have posted to you by accident, sorry… You said nothing wrong.

  • @lukinbactex If you worked or associated with Horton or Cochran, who both died in 1960, you must be older than God. If you think that Emmylou Harris isn't a great singer, then your opinion is indeed humble. But let's be charitable- perhaps you've just forgotten what good music is.

  • @landl47 To the critical sense, as I stated, each has their own opinion, opinions however do not set the standard for excellence.... Emmy has the often lamented "Whiney" voice... if you think she is so great, then listen to her all you like, but don't push your lack of taste on others! And yes I am old, my brother that passed away this month played on the Louisiana Hayride with Horton in the early 50's and introduced me to the many that later became friends,,,, back when country music was music

  • @lukinbactex Much respect, but pot...the kettle called.

  • @luketdrifter2100

So what does your comment mean? .... "luketdrifter", isn't that a little wishful thinking on your part? I recall when Hank passed away just 6 days after my birthday... a true American "Country" singer, hillbilly as we used to call them. I regret I only saw him once at the Hay Ride..... Gert a little culture son...!

  • @lukinbactex I could be wrong but you look like some one I saw at the All American Futurity horce races in Ruidoso about 1982... with Willie Nelson?

  • @MrAmerican40 I think you are correct, Willie played the horse show, we shared a joint a little Jack and I picked a little on his Martin. Where were you?

  • @lukinbactex You don't recall when Hank passed away, because you are not 82 years old with throat cancer. A dose of culture would probably make you grow up.

  • @luketdrifter2100

You are dumber than you should be.... asswipe. I was born december 30 1929 ... hank passed on jan 1 1953. I see how much the world has changed with morons like you that for some reason think you know it all, I don't know how old you are but I have greatgrand kids probably older. do yourself a favor and take your own advice, grow up.

  • @lukinbactex I can make up dates too. And accounts. The internet is mighty. You don't have great grand kids at all, nor grand kids, I'd bet probably not even kids.

  • @luketdrifter2100 You must be another little boy playing on the internet. lukenbactex is my grandfather and will be 82 in a couple of weeks-take some of these other folks advice-grow up sonny boy.

  • @anjelina1940 No, he isn't.

  • @luketdrifter2100 You are one sick bastard !

  • @luketdrifter2100 Hey fellow, you sound as bad as the pedalman character, guess there has to be MORE than one in every crowd!

  • @Iconius1 You mean more than one person that sees lukinbactex as a fraud and a tool? I'd sure as hell hope so.

  • @luketdrifter2100 ..... luketheidiot.....You are the fool, get a life creep and leave the old guy alone. He has more character in his little finger than you have in your whole body!

  • @Iconius1 No, he doesn't.

  • @lukinbactex Oh, my! Our tastes differ. Go listen to anything you like. sarcasm~> I must surely be a dolt to disagree with such genius.<~ sarcasm How pitiful you waste your energy on what you can't appreciate. Sorry you lost your brother, but is he your claim to fame and taste? How sad.

  • @lukinbactex You are the one pushing your tastes on others. Your insults are noticed and are not helpful, but simple name calling. You are a hypocrite in your critique and therefore your opinion is unbelievable. Gee, arrogant one, I don't need your advice to "listen to her all I want". "Back when"......Music moves and moves with the people and you are left behind to stay "Back when".

  • @wavepainter I'm curious. Could you name a few singers you do like? Male and Female would be nice. This might help the participants in this converstation to see what your musical tastes are and why you don't like Ms. Harris. Best of Luck - gm108

  • @lukinbactex since your old, maybe your hearing just is not just what it once was? She is a song bird, just don't listen to her.

  • @lukinbactex No, not sick at all--just wrong. This is the best version of this Van Zandt classic that exists to date. Harris nails the song, the irony, and the sarcastic tone of this song from beginning to end.

  • @lukinbactex Just to clarify your "association' with all those you named ( this will make you look really good and an expert opinion ) what exactly was your association ?

  • @pedalman My association is long and varried, I do not need to explain to you, you are typical of the "Know it alls" on utube, you feel challenged if your opinions and tastes are not shared.... keep pedalling maybe you'll make it some day!

  • @pedalman I didn't elude to anything.... you are just a dumb ass that for some reason wants to stir the pot.... you stupid bastard get a fukin life and stop pestering decent people!

  • @lukinbactex Yeah OK Ill stop asking you what your asociations were with your list of superstars Marty Robbins, Willie Nelson, Ray Price Johnny cash,Johnny Horton, Hank Cochrine, Roy Orbison.

You called me dumb ass and a bastard but I find that when people resort to abuse and bad language in any discussion and refuse to answer a question they are usually defending themselves and are not what they say they are. You say I want " stir the pot" bit is there anything in the pot ???

  • @pedalman Thanks for the reply to my personal message box , another abusive remark , you obviously dont want every one to see what a verbally abusive person you are .

Reading back I see your brother was on the Hayride with Johnny Horton etc, I assume you were there with him and met all these stars ..that must have been superb to be around true country music when it was proper country. Thats what I wanted to hear about now im thinking you are just too modest to tell us what you did..

  • @lukinbactex You need to go see a doctor about your hearing.

  • @pedalman Heh. She is STILL gorgeous and beautiful with a voice to die for.

  • An American treasure

  • cool beans !

  • they were both so young...saw her about this time in boulder.

  • God, her voice is tops. <3

  • R.I.P. TOWNES VAN ZANT

  • Fantastic version!

  • The song of one genius sung by another. Can't beat that.

  • Albert Lee on lead guitar, Rodney on background vocals..............what a great band!

  • @ItsudemoAibon They didn't call it the hot band for nothing...

  • Wow, look at how young Rodney Crowell is here.

  • I love this version the best!

  • Townes forever!

  • Very nice song, sung by the greatest, Emmylou - love it.....

  • Love it, love it,love it!

  • :D thanks Laurie, i love this song :)

  • Sweet Goddess. Thanks Laurie
