With the great singer-songwrtiter Rodney Crowell and world class lead guitarist Albert Lee singing backup harmonies; Emmy sounds just like an angel... I just love her to death!!!
My darlin and I had the great privilege to see ELH and the original Hot Band. Over the years, we saw several installments of the band, and once, Emmy stalked onto the stage in high heels and that gorgeous black Gibson J who's fingerboard she could hardly reach due to late pregnancy. Reflecting, the only artists we've seen as much or more were Bob Dylan and James Taylor. Here on this sunny p.m., with my fuzzy people at my feet, I grin out loud. Not bad... Not bad too bad at all...

There were some greats in the 50s, some who hit in the 60s, some in the 70s, etc. Emmylou sings authentic bluegrass / hill people style. It's different from country-western, from honky-tonk, from outlaw country, and so on. I love listening to Hank, Patsy, Ernest Tubb, Eddy Arnold, Roy Acuff, Kitty Wells, & Cash, Haggard, Dolly, Waylon, Willie, Loretta, the Possum, Tammy and on & on. But Emmylou is one of the greats at the kind of singing she does, a true heir to Bill Monroe & the Carters.
I'm not sure i can think of a single musician anywhere who wouldn't shake his/her head at all the negative energy y'all put up here. Leave it alone. You don't like it, that's cool, but why ya need to put down something that others honestly get a good feeling from? Leave it alone.
@rkoorse Excellent comment. Don Henley referred to this as "such a graceless age." Indeed, it is. Ugly, ignorant, and Mean... So many behave as if the world is just their video game and everybody else are just props. No language but filth, no politics but nihilism, no shame, pride, no (self) respect, no goals, no center, - empty as a new coffin - operating on a reptilian mid-brain and bouncing through the universe like a pinball.
I'm a massive Townes Van Zandt fan, and this is one of his best songs. There have been several good versions, but no-one sings it like Emmylou...she made it her own!
often lamented "Whiney" voice...??? Never heard that one before and being a singer myself, I can be quite the critic of someone's singing voice. If you don't like her timbre that's one thing but, whiney? Not even. Just about every singer has a spot in their range as they go up the scale, where they shift from their chest voice to what can be described as singing from your head. It can sound subtly annoying or obtrusive. Harris is the rare exception. A flawless voice; your taste or not.........
@jdubbiyou So you know it all.... your opinion is worth no more than anyone elses... it has nothing to do with "timbre". You make it up as you go, like lukethe dumbass.
This is about music, not politics of the personal/egotistical sort. Emmylou Harris, flanked by Rodney Crowell and Albert Lee, embody some of the finest American musical talent ever to grace a stage, and I'm grateful to 1000magicians for uploading this.
I had the great good fortune to tour with Emmy back in the early '80s. Got to hear her sing this repeatedly, night after night. I was just a lighting guy but I was on the side of the stage every night. She's such a sweetheart. And beautiful. I was very lucky. N.
Thing ya need to gang.......is watch and listen to this one ......and hunt down the CMT video -right here on U-tube -- "Pancho and Lefty " with Willie and Merle...and run 'em back to back and REALLY enjoy the tune
@Aquapello1967 Quote -" I have always loved this woman- I still do "Hey are you Rodney Crowell ???? He said those EXACT words in a TV documentary several years ago.
actually his name was Townes Van Zandt, the original writer of this song.... a lot of the bakersfield/california country singers at the time covered his songs cause he had no interest in fame but wrote amazing songs.
I was turned on to EmmyLou Harris music in 1979 by my cute, fun friend JoAnn. I have enjoyed 30 more years of EmmyLou music as a result of this introduction.
I haven't seen JoAnn since 1981 but I still cherish our all too brief friendship. As you go through life, cherish the time you get to spend with the high quality people you meet. You will appreciate them always.
@jhffmn1 Actually, Emmylou didnt right this song, she covered it for her album in 1977. A man named Van Zandt wrote this song in 1972. It's a good song for sure. I'm not trying to sound like a smart ass,I just wanted to let you know who wrote it.
@sup3rduty350 I know buddy :-) He wrote it from the soul, Emmy Lou conveyed it perfectly was all I was sayin... Willie didn't do to bad a job with it either!
Yes, in my opinion one of the most distinguishable (top 25) voices in modern times. (World wide) again, just my opinion. .......Others on the list (distinguishable) JR (Cash) .....Willie.....Bob Dylan.......Can yall name a few?
@BALKISDREAMER The gentleman on the Telecaster is none other than Mr. Albert Lee, Country picker extraordinaire. He was in Eric Clapton's Band for approximately 4-5 years and plays on 3 different albums by Clapton. It's amazing that a Brit could be one of the greatest Country guitar players of all time...!
@pedalman "Wasn't she?..." STILL IS so gorgeous and beautiful! Even more so. There aren't too many who can rock a silver mane the way she does! She only gets better and better.
@lukinbactex I think she has a very different AND distinctive voice a bit like Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton ....you either love them or hate them but there is no denying they all have dominated their portion of country music history.
@jomitast Just honest.... everyone has the right to their opinion, since I have been a musician, a singer and have been involved in country music and associated with many country artists, Marty Robbins, Ray Price, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Johnny Horton, Eddie Cochran,Roy Obinson.... the list is endless. So I have a real appreciation for "good" music... in my humble opinion.
@lukinbactex If you worked or associated with Horton or Cochran, who both died in 1960, you must be older than God. If you think that Emmylou Harris isn't a great singer, then your opinion is indeed humble. But let's be charitable- perhaps you've just forgotten what good music is.
@landl47 To the critical sense, as I stated, each has their own opinion, opinions however do not set the standard for excellence.... Emmy has the often lamented "Whiney" voice... if you think she is so great, then listen to her all you like, but don't push your lack of taste on others! And yes I am old, my brother that passed away this month played on the Louisiana Hayride with Horton in the early 50's and introduced me to the many that later became friends,,,, back when country music was music
So what does your comment mean? .... "luketdrifter", isn't that a little wishful thinking on your part? I recall when Hank passed away just 6 days after my birthday... a true American "Country" singer, hillbilly as we used to call them. I regret I only saw him once at the Hay Ride..... @MrAmerican40 I think you are correct, Willie played the horse show, we shared a joint a little Jack and I picked a little on his Martin. Where were you?

You are a hypocrite in your critique and therefore your opinion is unbelievable. Gee, arrogant one, I don't need your advice to "listen to her all I want".
