@Techdrome I didn´t even know that Janek tune strings same as Garrison. The first one was Dominnique Dipiazza. In fact, long time ago Garrison asked to Dominique about tunning strings EADGC, Whereas Dominnique was the firt bass player using 4 fingers right hand technique in the 70`s
Es cierto que son diferentes bajistas y músicos, pero concretamente aquí Janek se caga en la cara de Hadrien... no hay color en cuanto a musicalidad, expresividad, fuerza...
music is intertwined with every aspect of life. You can see the difference in these two players life experience, and it is embodied in their music. Hadrien is boring, cliche, and overdressed in his playing style. Janek has flavor.
@nathanbossoh i respect your opinion, i just dont think "expressing yourself" means running licks. I should have stated that his playing doesnt inspire me personally, others can like what they like. But as far as transcending beyond the realm of impressing other bass players, this dude just doesnt have it for me. I think its personified in his body language, and demeanor. He is a great technician, im sure he works hard, and im glad hes getting his recogniton.
I understand your point now, if your saying that his playing doesnt inspire you than im cool with that.
I know that some people arnt Had fans because of how he plays, thats cool, its just when people decide to say that his playing is actaully bad or he is not any good on bass thats when i just wont agree with whoever says it, not just because i personally like his style, but in general i think its not correct to say that about any good bass player.
..there is your life before and after you heard Jaco..there is your life before and after you heard Laurence Cottle..and then there is Hadrien Feraud..
is this one of janek's songs if so that would help to explain why he is more fluid like on it. but there is no doubt they are both strong bass player looked up to by many me included. ah someday somewhy lol.
I'm just going to put it out there- music is not about comparing somebody against somebody else. It's about listening objectively. If we did that then imagine a video of Miles Davis playing alongside Dizzy- people would say that because Miles played fewer notes than Dizzy it in some way made him an inferior musician which of course is silliness. At the end of the day it's Hadrien and Janek up there playing- if we were anywhere near their calibre then it would be us up there and them watching.
I don't know how anyone can even begin to place Hadrien in the same league as Janek!! Just listen to how musically Janek leads the way with his solo, once you start listening you can't stop because he is so good at structuring idéas and building up his solo. Hadrien is nowhere near that! 80% of his solo is pure garbage, just jiving and playing unmotivated 32nd note runs. And listen to the way Janek plays when he's not soloing! Grooviest shit you'll ever hear.
I'm just saying that Janek has a sense of direction 100% of the time, both when soloing and comping. That is a huge factor in what makes a solo interesting. Janek plays shorter than both Hadrien and Otmar, but his solo stands out to me way more. His solo is like a coherent story being told that you can't stop listening to. Hadrien just doesn't have that!
its because i enjoy hadrien solo way more then janek even though he is much more melodic and i know definately that i am not the only one in the world. every knows about jankes melodic playin but that dsnt make him better, a solo isnt purley about how melodic you can play, uv completly narrowed it down by saying that.
They have different styles. Hadrien has devoted his life to expressing himself on the the bass just like Janek. His solo may not be as captivating to you, but it what Hadrien feels and what he wants to play. It isn't garbage, and how can't you say it is unmotivated. I also prefer listening to Janek, but that is no reason to bash Hadrien's way of soloing.
you are right, there is no comparison because its music which really isnt about comparing anyway. i wouldnt put them in the same league because theyre too different.. but to put one player below the other is unthinkable.. theyre both phenomenal. its unthinkable more so to call hadrien's soloing garbage and im sure that even janek would agree with me on that.
For me the best usage of the rhythm change comes at 8:29 (like slam dunk) and even better at 9:41. I like how Hadrien at 9:26 quotes Janek from 1:26. His sence for the spacing at 7:45 and how much he feels what he plays - 8:08.Beautiful middle-like sound. One of the finest painters. The visionary.
I agree with buddyro57. I like how Janek is trying to get his own sound. Hadrien is no doubt talented but I wish he would leave behind the "jaco-ish" things he does. Hadrien is still a technical monster though and some of his compositions are interesting. But I like Janek better.
Make no mistake these are both world-class guys, the only thing I'd say about Feraud is that he stops playing when the tune goes into the 3 and begins that cycle idea....Janek plays over the changes better i think. Still-they both sound amazing.
I think both these guys are amazing. Hadrien does come across as really technical, but what he's playing harmonically is really nice, it just seems masked by that lack of rhythmic change in the intense passages.
Janek's also ridiculously talented technically but there's less showing off with him.
Had's lines are all just so chromaticised that they fit over anything (or don't fit over anything, depending on how you look at it) while playing at breakneck speeds. Janek is kind of the exact opposite, really feeling everything out with spectacular phrasing with a rather diatonic harmonic sensibility.
Well i think there´s no point on comparing Had with Janek, they are both totally different players, Had is more technical and Janek more melodical and bluesy, it´s just a matter of taste which one you like best, but doesnt mean than one is better than the other one, is like comparing Ron Carter with Scott LaFaro, both great but different! enjoy both!
@leetheviolet I actually like it o_o. Reminds me more of prog rock keyboard playing but I thought it sounded very cool. The sound was a little aggressive but the melodic ideas were very nice. Though, it did go on for little too long, lol.
im usually a fan of janeks playing, hes basically a pat metheny copy on bass but after following his progress over the past 5 years i sometimes just hear the same licks over and over and over again (theres about 3 or 4 that just come up in EVERY solo). theyre great phrases but its just a little disheartening that after that amount of time the same licks are the basis for every solo. u cant deny hes a good bass player he gets some work but im just sayin its something ive noticed
Hey Janek, try and put a little feeling in your playing.... LOL Holy crap you were grovin... most inspirational. Had seemed to need an expresso at first, till his solo!
So finally Had has his new Burner Hadrien Feraud signature, looks cool and sounds more or les the same though jaja, amazing playing both of you, hope to see you one day in Amsterdam!
Yeahhh !! Amazing ...Hadrien sounds perfect , thanks Janek for sharing those great moments .. Mr Ruiz solo is awesome ..such a great quartet , you all guys ,should think of developing this magical formation ... cheers
Part 2. I know some people will disagree, but I tell you that appearances do make a difference. You attract a huge female following, and watch this music end up on comtemp. f.m. radio. How cool would that be? People have a very short turn/on-off time. in 30 sec. or less they are gona be sold, or not sold. So we need to look good, stay in shape. Jeff B. used to look like a movie star, what happened there? We need you back Jeff. We need to get this genre accepted by the masses.
I disagree. KEEP THE LEATHER PANTS. and I'll tell you why....
In my band we have a 20 something gal singer. I showed her a picture of Hadrien's CD. She went nuts, and went out and bought it, simply because of his appearance. The reality of this is that one reason Jazz-fusion seems to turn so many lay people off is that most jazz cats dress horribly, and are out of shape phsically which gvies a bad impression right from the get-go.
wow Hadrien ..; Awsome playing as usual , great musicality ... feelings , and killer chops ..thanks for sharing , !!! Thanks Tom ,Janek and Otmaro , such a great Rythm section..

you talk as if there is a certain way that you have to play when you play bass otherwise your not a real bass player,
Hadrien found his way of expressing himself on bass and that will always be his way, weather you like it or not.
he is still a worldly recognized bass player and hes still going to probably be one of the best when he gets older, you cant really that.
