I was born in 1978 and raised in Harvey so I have no memories other than it being boarded up for years and back n the '90 the mayor made promises to revive the mall. But the people n the city that came in drove the city down to its grave. My parents thought it will get better soon. It never did I no longer live there but my parents decided to stay even though the city is now rougher. Sorry to say but puttin money into something so amazin in a town for a people where the majority will not appre
So sad that owners neglected such classic architecture of the past. Check out the Galleria Mall in down town Houston, TX as the interior design is fascinating!
Does anybody know if something happened of the ground the mall is sitting on (Indian Burial Ground or something of that sort) a long time ago. It seems the golf course and the mall, and the demolition as run into bad luck. Does anybody know anything about that, I mean it sound strange to me.
@peterpamanez--I agree. The place is so gone such that tearing it down would be the ideal thing up to this point. I have no way of getting up there anytime soon therefore I won't be able to see its remains up close. They tell me the city of Harvey has really gone downhill over the years. At this rate, it will take a miracle to get that town back on its 2 feet all over again. Strange happenings in a state that supposedly growing fast. I used to live in Chicago.
i would love to see dixie mall beh brought back o life, i mean
cuz the mall was in the blues brothers imagine how many people it would bring into the mall, its sad just seeing it rot away, people shuld make a charity for this mall
i was supposed to move to chicago cuz meh a and my dad are huge blues brothers fans but yep we're here in L.A. cuz our dodgers are here but i wanna help bring this mall back
@peterpamanez--*lol* I used to live in Chicago. I am glad I don't anymore. Funny how you should mention L.A. b/c I am hoping to end up there. Beats North Carolina (a shithole I have to endure) 1,000,000X. I guess that if it wouldn't be for the Blues Bros. movie, this mall would be nothing. I too would really like to see the remains of this mall as well as the town of Harvey after 26 years.
L.A. isnt all that great i mean we have a few abandoned malls here but they r long gone now yep maybe in a few yrs ill visit harvey and check out all that stuff , i would build like a blues brothers museum or something
@peterpamanez Aside from the fact the structure is too far gone, no one will ever travel to Harvey to shop. You'll end up getting shot. The violence around the mall area is the reason the mall died in the first place. it's only gotten worse in the last 30+ years. There were rapes and murders in the parking lot when the place was open.
His name is Gary McLarty - the under oath photo is from him being in court about Robert Blake and his wifes murder... he was being accused of being hired by Blake to kill his wife......
he also was in the hellicopter when Vic Morrow was killed in the accident in that movie....
maybe he needs to put a rabbits foot in his pocket or something!!!
1993 was the last official murder. I just googled this and there was a CBS 2 news story saying that it's going to be demolished soon. Don't know if there's any truth to this or not buuuuuuuut.....
When I get some time, maybe I'll write to them and see if they've thought about doing a documentary on it. From what I've seen, it'll be about 2020 before DSM is no more.
Great video knuckleball. Not that there is anything wrong with the Beatles but it's too bad you couldn't use the music from the first video. That song is PERFECT for DSM.
Pete.... thanks... have to tell you that the first video music was a fluke for sure... I had used 20 years ago by Kenny Rogers and youtube made me replace it with a public domain type song that they had on here..... so that was what I used.... dont have a clue the name of it or anything
@knuckelball44--That's one of the many things I hate about YouTube. They are very anal over the use of ''copyrighted'' material. The guy at the beginning holding the Grover doll looks a lot like George Harrison (of the Beatles), so the music here is perfect. Thanks for sharing.
the guys that took the pictures did a great job and I am glad they just let me put them all together... had to do some serious digging for some photos... hoping to do part 3 if some old photos show up!! thanks again
I found out that I've posted some misinformation regarding DSM. Not every store was a real store. The Olds dealership didn't actually exist for example. I apologize, elkinsinbox.
Thanks Dave.... Great work again by Mickey Jon and Mike...... working on part 3... as soon as we can get some OLD photos.... message me if anyone has any!

@patsaxon I agree that it's a shame to leave buildings to decay, but the SIxties didn't exactly produce "classic architecture."

Pampers thank for letting me know. I remember reading about that on line and couldn't remember when it happened.

No problem, SixFeetUndr101. I always wondered if there were any unofficial murders that took place there. Mob hits for example. Or gang hits.

Sad! Im not from the area, never been tot his mall! One question,What happened to this place? why did it close?
mgrella63 2 years ago
It's in Harvey, Illinois. Which is about as ghetto as a city can get.

It would have been great to see Dixie Square in it's heyday. I think History Channel should use this mall for it's series Life After People.

I was actually surprised they didn't metion it. The whole series, I was thinking, "Dixie Square is living proof".

Pete, maybe the History Channel can predict how long it will be before Dixie Square falls down.
