  • Goin into that In a silent way tune during sax solo is awesome. But I haven't heard a better version of this tune yet than the VSOP super live. It seldom gets funkier than that.

  • Quelli erano gli anni! C'è anche master Mouzon!

  • @MrGoDisco Thanks so much! Too bad the lights on my face and drums weren't bright enough! I'm playing drums in the dark!

  • funk goes to college......

  • That cut at @7:19 was so wack. That's one of the best parts of the song.

  • bill summers keepimg it tight! it's like the band is following him and not the drummer!

  • Awesome music. The 70s sure put out some awesome music!

  • @alkh3myst that's his opinion - jazz is what you make it, jazz is not men in suits playing swing in a New York club captured in black and white, jazz is feeling the groove.

  • @jazzzzdude My point exactly!

  • what's the name of this guitar player?

  • @r0nes On the "Manchild" album that the studio version appears, that would be Ray Parker Jr of Ghostbuster fame.

  • @r0nes On the "Manchild" album that the studio version appears, that would be Ray Parker Jr of Ghostbuster fame.

  • @r0nes The funky guitarist's name is Ray Obiedo.

  • So this is the source of that super-colorful funky music I kept hearing around me when I was 4 and 5 years old. Some sick sheeyit!

  • OH I enjoyed watching that percussionist... for that alone it deserves to be 1 of my favourites, He he ! I needed some sax too.. Regards . Thank You.

  • My MOZART!

    the best jazzmen ever

and what a team: bennie maupin/paul jackson...

  • Webster Lewis on the other keyboards.

  • simply killer.

  • the best

  • right Mouzon on drums BM on clarinette too check his album slow trafic to the right * folks try "water torture" as ringtone

  • @azizbrs Benny plays tenor sax and lyricon in this video.

  • @jazzzzdude The main melody is Benny on lyricon.

  • he's still so awesome that today's high schoolers are arranging songs of his music (eg. the Bishop's School Jazz Band). That's longevity! His music is Forever!

  • je prefere la version album live avec Ray parker Jr à la cocotte ;)

  • Tu m'etonne !

  • Alphonse on drums!

  • Bennie Maupin on sax.... Check out his "It Remains to be Seen" cut on Youtube....

  • this is fucking amazing

  • I think this is so funky.....

  • Paul Jackson effin rips it. The percussion is pretty tight too.

  • I wouls say get:

    Thrust

    Man-Child

But this is funky! I love it!

  • Sorry, but this is not very funky compared to the studio version, a little too psychadelic but not too bad.

  • @tilaunc are u the one dislike? lol

  • What is the the best Herbie Hancock album to buy?

I'm more of a rocker, but i like Jeff Beck's fusion and Steely Dan.

    thanks

  • headhunters

    thrust

    flood

  • yeah agreed. You gotta throw manchild in there too though. Funky shit

  • Mr. Hands is beautiful.

Headhunters, Manchild, Thrust and Secrets all must-haves though.

Sunlight is his better pop album, Future Shock is the better of his turntable material (though P.Bop on Perfect Machine is liquid gold).

  • There's only one answer to stevieVantanna's question here...Buy ALL of Herbie's Albums!

    Start with headhunters.

  • i agree, get all of the albums... but i will say that my favourite herbie song is maiden voyage... it takes me to such peaceful places... the album is wonderful as well. my other favourite songs are three bags full, sleeping giant, the second version of watermelon man, tell me a bedtime story, his cover of 'you've got it bad girl', be still (with imani uzuri)... so many things. he is my favourite pianist. he is beautiful.

  • if ur not a big straight ahead jazz fan i would start with something that's easier to swallow like headhunters, but maiden voyage is my favorite herbie hancock album, eye of the hurricane is beyond insane

  • Hey PhukkOfff - for a 107 year old guy you're very very smart!!! Empyrean Isle aint bad either

    Bob

  • haha, im 16, the 107 is just so i can get into nightclubs

  • Neat!

  • hmmm, i would say maiden voyage is easier to swallow, since the headhunters stuff was so controversial when it came out... i think it's all good though... and let's not forget the fat albert rotunda!!!

  • I agree - "Eye of the Hurricane" is insane. I would definitely recommend Maiden Voyage - the title track and "Dolphin Dance" are both amazing yet not very challenging for the novice jazz fan. I would also recommend Speak Like A Child and Takin Off, the latter of which has Dexter Gordon on sax.

  • SEXTANT

  • I would highly recommend Manchild... the combination of Louis Johnson and 'Wah-Wah' Watson is about as funky as you can get.

  • you cannot forget STEVIE WONDER!!!!

  • The full line up is: Herbie, + Bennie Maupin (Saxes), Ray Obiedo (guitar), Paul Jackson Jnr (Bass), Webster Lewis (Organ), Alphonse Mouzon (drums), Bill Summers (percussion). I saw their concert at the Rainbow Theatre. This was shortly after the release of the 'Feets Don't Fail me Now' album. BTW, at 6.06 mins, Ray obiedo plays the guitar riff from James Brown's 'It's a new day'.

  • 1 mistake : Paul Jackson Senior not junior. Paul Jackson Jnr is his son and is a guitar player. =D

  • Not 'Jnr' (agreed), but I don't believe he is the father of the guitarist Paul Jackson jnr.

  • not related at all. THIS Paul Jackson is from Northern Cal, and "Junior" is from Southern Cal. Besides, they're only about 13 or so years apart (not that that means they can't be father and son, but it's not really likely in this case).

  • Now that big & loose.. Back in the day vibe.. Love it!

  • i think thats ray obeido on the git

  • awesome! anyone know who's on guitar? I know he used Ray Parker Jr. (of Ghostbusters fame) during this era.

  • Probably Wah Wah Watson, Herbie called him the clock

  • Thats an awful nickname I mea..... oh "the CLOCK"... thought you said something else

  • The guy with the cap? It's definitely not Ray Parker Jr or Wah Wah Watson, AKA Melvin Ragin, because they're both black, and the guitarist in this vid is white. The only guy who was on the Man Child album other than Herbie in this performance is Benny Maupin on woodwinds, with the glasses.

  • God bless you,sir.

  • Ta - I'm rushing to get all my clips back on line and making all kinds of goofs!

    Bob

  • thanks for this. it is actually from the show "rock goes to college" and happened in 1979 round the time of "feets don't fail me now".
