Goin into that In a silent way tune during sax solo is awesome. But I haven't heard a better version of this tune yet than the VSOP super live. It seldom gets funkier than that.
@alkh3myst that's his opinion - jazz is what you make it, jazz is not men in suits playing swing in a New York club captured in black and white, jazz is feeling the groove.
he's still so awesome that today's high schoolers are arranging songs of his music (eg. the Bishop's School Jazz Band). That's longevity! His music is Forever!
i agree, get all of the albums... but i will say that my favourite herbie song is maiden voyage... it takes me to such peaceful places... the album is wonderful as well. my other favourite songs are three bags full, sleeping giant, the second version of watermelon man, tell me a bedtime story, his cover of 'you've got it bad girl', be still (with imani uzuri)... so many things. he is my favourite pianist. he is beautiful.
if ur not a big straight ahead jazz fan i would start with something that's easier to swallow like headhunters, but maiden voyage is my favorite herbie hancock album, eye of the hurricane is beyond insane
hmmm, i would say maiden voyage is easier to swallow, since the headhunters stuff was so controversial when it came out... i think it's all good though... and let's not forget the fat albert rotunda!!!
I agree - "Eye of the Hurricane" is insane. I would definitely recommend Maiden Voyage - the title track and "Dolphin Dance" are both amazing yet not very challenging for the novice jazz fan. I would also recommend Speak Like A Child and Takin Off, the latter of which has Dexter Gordon on sax.
The full line up is: Herbie, + Bennie Maupin (Saxes), Ray Obiedo (guitar), Paul Jackson Jnr (Bass), Webster Lewis (Organ), Alphonse Mouzon (drums), Bill Summers (percussion). I saw their concert at the Rainbow Theatre. This was shortly after the release of the 'Feets Don't Fail me Now' album. BTW, at 6.06 mins, Ray obiedo plays the guitar riff from James Brown's 'It's a new day'.
not related at all. THIS Paul Jackson is from Northern Cal, and "Junior" is from Southern Cal. Besides, they're only about 13 or so years apart (not that that means they can't be father and son, but it's not really likely in this case).
The guy with the cap? It's definitely not Ray Parker Jr or Wah Wah Watson, AKA Melvin Ragin, because they're both black, and the guitarist in this vid is white. The only guy who was on the Man Child album other than Herbie in this performance is Benny Maupin on woodwinds, with the glasses.

what's the name of this guitar player?

@r0nes On the "Manchild" album that the studio version appears, that would be Ray Parker Jr of Ghostbuster fame.

What is the the best Herbie Hancock album to buy?
I'm more of a rocker, but i like Jeff Beck's fusion and Steely Dan.
thanks

headhunters

yeah agreed. You gotta throw manchild in there too though. Funky shit
C0leman 3 years ago
Mr. Hands is beautiful.
Headhunters, Manchild, Thrust and Secrets all must-haves though.
Sunlight is his better pop album, Future Shock is the better of his turntable material (though P.Bop on Perfect Machine is liquid gold).

There's only one answer to stevieVantanna's question here...Buy ALL of Herbie's Albums!
Start with headhunters.

1 mistake : Paul Jackson Senior not junior. Paul Jackson Jnr is his son and is a guitar player. =D

Not 'Jnr' (agreed), but I don't believe he is the father of the guitarist Paul Jackson jnr.
