As a woman, I don't find this video degrading at all. Yes, there are some sexual images in this video, but they are pretty tame compared to some videos. He's singing about how much he is in to his woman--it's not like he's singing about having sex with tons of strangers or shows gobs of women dancing around him. I absolutely agree that the lyrics are beautiful. I don't have a problem with sex or sexual imagery. But there is certainly something to be said from the viewpoint of the feminist critique regarding the representations of women and women's sexuality in this video. It is not the sex that I am opposed to it is the redundant, stereotypical portrayal of women. I absolutely agree that sex is undeservingly stigmatized by our society; however,sexuality (and predominantly female sexuality as well as the female body) are bought and sold as a commodity. It is obvious that his ideals regarding female sexuality revolve around the commodification of things even if he doesn't realize it. A guy sitting on the couch while his woman dances in fron of him in lingerie. Not to mention the deliberate focus on particular bodyparts of the woman. And the slow unravelling of a woman with nipple pasties? Way to think outside the box. Do you see him dancing half naked in front of the camera? In this video, sex is portrayed to be about things.

Ever consider that the chick dancin could be his girlfriend or wife! I dance for my man in lingerie and stuff....nothin wrong there! I see it as consenting passionate. Its all how you define passion and what you view as degrading! To each his own! Not all things are degrading to all people! Nothing wrong with lingerie and pasties! As a woman, I don't find this video degrading at all. Yes, there are some sexual images in this video, but they are pretty tame compared to some videos. He's singing about how much he is in to his woman--it's not like he's singing about having sex with tons of strangers or shows gobs of women dancing around him. This is a tribute to the woman he loves and wants to stay with--he says "Don't ever set me free." I think it's beautiful. Stay Human, Michael!

I absolutely agree that the lyrics are beautiful. I don't have a problem with sex or sexual imagery. But there is certainly something to be said from the viewpoint of the feminist critique regarding the representations of women and women's sexuality in this video. I mean honestly, couldn't he come up with anything more sexually creative than a masked/identitiless women whose arms are held at her side, being unwrapped to reveal pasties covering her nipples? Lil Kim?

And therefore, he should be more consciencious of the media that he produces and sends out into hte world. I am not bashing anyone. I am only trying to initiate a meaningful conversation about the implications of media in our society, and examine the media that we incorporate into our lives. I believe that this kind of examination is something that MF has repeatedly advocated for in his music. I am asking him to examine his own preconceptions of women and sexuality.

Michael is not only gifted with music composition and being poetic, he's also inherited even bigger gift, gift of big love, heart and soul, unique empathy.
But I do think you are having a legitimate discussion here about his criticism of media and this video. But you know what, everyone in this world is a hypocrite, some just don't give a damn, some try very hard to not to become one. I certainly support the ones at least try, even at times when the lines are blurry like this video.

Personally I think the functionality of life & nature on this planet is the greatest hypocrisy. Human constantly try to find our principals or core value to follow, so we can function and justify. But we find plenty of hypocrisy at play in nature. It makes me wonder if "hypocrisy" is one of the elements to keep balance?
I always day dream about "harmony & peace" in human world. But does that mean harmony & peace for other life on earth if we consider our world as one entity, hummm.....

Yes, sex is life; however, hte mass-produced representationsf the comodified female body that are passed off as "sex" in this society are shallow and degrading. If you had actually read my comments, then you would know that I said that I don't think that MF has intentially degraded women in this video, but that he has been sexualized in a society that routinely degrades women sexually. Because MF clais to be an enlightened individual, he sould be more aware of the societal plight of women.

However, the lyrics of the song are beautiful, and seem sincere. I don't think that MF is being intentionally misogynistic, but he is a product of our society in a position of power, and as such, the media that he produces should be examined by an aware public, as should our government. Something that is often advocated by Franti himself.

Perhaps if you were to study the feminist critique of the mass media (i.e. television, advertising, vid. games, pornography, and MUSIC VIDEOS) then you would be more inclined toward an intelligent feminist critique of this video. Besides, the men are also very attractive, not just the women. Just because someone's attractive and scantily clad in a video doesn't mean their sexuality is being exploited. The lyrics to me describe a very genuine, passionate relationship, not some one night stand or anything that you find in mainstream stuff.
Plus, the US is so sensitive about sex already, as opposed to violence. A little steaminess doesn't hurt.

I agree whole heartedly and if you were to hear some of the other songs on this album...well the exploiting statement might not be made. In one of his other songs he talks about coming to a womans aide after she has been smacked by a man she is with. He is not bravado! He is a genuine being of LOVE! PURE! Di:)

Many people in our world INTEND no harm by their actions, but they are as much a product of their society as anyone. People who are in positions of power (Mr. Franti included) need to be very conscious of their actions and how they effect those they have influence over. I have met Michael as well, and I am sure that he intended no harm in making this video. However, my previous analysis stands, and whether he has intended to or not, he has represented women in a sexually exploitative way.

I fully respect your opinion I still disagree.I feel that these woman portray an empowered energy and that it is describing passion a relationship I dont hear it as exploitive! To me it is of deep love and passion!So I respectfully disagree in this case. But I do agree about people in positions of power needing to be conscientious about what they do. And this has nothing to do with race there are different ethnicities portrayed

It is not the sex that I am opposed to it is the redundant, stereotypical portrayal of women. I absolutely agree that sex is undeservingly stigmatized by our society; however,sexuality (and predominantly female sexuality as well as the female body) are bought and sold as a commodity. Genuine sexuality is not about money.

I really like the lyrics in this song but I am disappointed to see Franti presenting his "object" of desire in such a stereotypical way and in turn female sexuality In the song he says his love isn't for sale he fails to recognize that in our capitalist society a woman's body and sexuality are for sale and that with the representation of woman in this video he is just perpetuating the cycle I am a huge Franti and Spearhead fan I hope that this video is no indication of where they are heading
