atmoi666, hey idiot i was a former fighter, chuvalo is a bum. he should of beaten patterson, i have alot of ring magazines chuvalo sucks,,, canada dont have good fighters...my record[ 40 fights 35 kos 5 losess...not bad 4 a middle weight
@09bnunez wow the bum went the distance with ali.and beat quarry who knocked out shavers in 1 round.the bum is fightin mathis a top contender right here.foreman called this bum one of the most durable guys he ever saw.he isnt an ali but the bum was a REAL CONTENDER.how many title fights were you in slick?
@09bnunez Chuvalo a club fighter? Chuvalo sold out Madison Square Garden about ten times. Limited skills? He was ranked in the top ten of heavyweight boxing for 17 years (longer than any fighter in history), scored 65 knockouts, was the heavyweight champion of Canada for more than two decades, and was never knocked down in over 100 fights (amateur and professional). Muhammed Ali and Floyd Patterson both called their bouts with Chuvalo the toughest of their career. Do your research.
@Beastie06 You've got to be kidding me. He was in the top ten of heavyweight boxing for 17 years - during the golden era! He fought in Madison Square Garden a ton of times, Maple Leaf Gardens, Houston Astrodome, etc. On what are you basing your opinion? People just think he's a limited fighter because he's never been knocked down, so his legendary toughness overshadows all his other assets. Out of 79 wins he had 65 knockouts. Nobody who knows anything about boxing would agree with you.
@Beastie06 CLUB FIGHTER,YER A DUMBASS BOXING KNOW NOTHING DISRESPECTFULL IGNORANT PISS ANT,this was a supreme contender duck no fuckin body kind of fighter STFU.
@STU676 Mathis beat Chuvalo, then Quarry beat Mathis, then Chuvalo beat Quarry. Strange sequence of events that illuminates how hard it is to judge which fighter is 'best'. That's what makes boxing interesting though
@ExplosiveThinMan I guess it was also a fluke that Mathis beat Chuvalo. Chuvalo was always ranked way higher than Mathis and was known to be a much better fighter.
@ExplosiveThinMan Well, yeah there is a lot of doubt about that. Neither were champ but Chuvalo was robbed against Terrell. Quarry doesn't have this same claim to the title. Also, Chuvalo was the first guy to ever knock Quarry out. Chuvalo was ranked in the top ten of heavyweight boxing longer than Quarry (longer than any other fighter ever, actually) and didn't have numerous miserable comebacks like Quarry did. Chuvalo was also never knocked down in 97 pro fights.
I dont doubt Chuvalo`s toughness or his chin. He had one of the great chins ever. The rest of their game favors Jerry though. More skilled, quicker not to mention he was a good counterpuncher.
Quarry beat some good fighters himself. Ernie Shavers KO1, Ron Lyle W10, Thad Spencer KO13, Mac Foster KO6 not to mention Floyd Patterson. He gave Joe Frazier a terrific fight in 1969. I you compare that to Chuvalo`s resume I think Quarry has the edge.
@atmoi666 I suppose you're right, it's arguable that Quarry was better than Chuvalo. But I think if you asked boxing experts, which none of us are, most would say Quarry was the better fighter. But whatever one's opinion, both were very accomplished, super tough fighters. I disagree with your comment about "numerous miserable comebacks" by Quarry though. In one of those "comebacks," he kayoed Earnie Shavers and beat Ron Lyle by decision. Miserable comeback? No way, no how.
@Kedbuka George Foreman has said that Jerry Quarry is the only fighter he ever ducked. Considering how completely JQ outboxed Ron Lyle, that might've been a smart move on Big George's part.
@kentamitchell George Never said any such thing and Jerry Quarry couldn't fight worth shit. Frazier whupped his ass twice. Ali beat the shit out of him and he lost to Floyd Patterson. George would have beat Jerry in one round or less.
@kentamitchell That's called "Patronage". Do you know what that means? If not, this is a lost cause. Okay, Okay, Big 6-4'' 225 pound Bonecrushing George was frightened of little barely 6 foot 197 pound Jerry Quarry, who REALLY lost to even smaller barely 6 foot 188 pound Floyd Patterson. You are right, no problem, wink, wink.
@bangitslo Watch the Foreman-Lyle fight, then the Quarry-Lyle bout. Lyle weighted 219 and was the same style of fighter as GF; Quarry gave him a boxing lesson.
@kentamitchell You are wasting your time talking to a guy who says Jerry Quarry couldn't fight worth shit. Apparently Ron Lyle, Ernie Shavers, Mac Foster, Thad Spencer etc., must have taken dives. And apparently they went to The Actors Studio and studied under Lee Strasberg because when they went down they went down hard...had me convinced that their asses had been knocked out. Maybe Ernie Shavers should have gotten the part of Stanley in "Street Car". "Stellllllaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"! ; )
Could you post the rest of the fight? After recently watching sorry excuses for heavyweight fights over the weekend I'm in need to watch two real bad-asses go at it.
@PUGCAT - The rest of the fight has Matthis just landing more punches and frustrating George while on his way to an easy decision. This is the best fight of Buster's career, as he was usually too overweight.
If Chuvalo had better foot speed and serious power in his right hand he could have been champion, as he already had the hardest chin ever. Actually, it was the era he fought that kept him from the top. If he were fighting today he'd probably smoke out the entire HW division.
Head butts are legal for the home town boxers in Utah, just joking, but Fulmer's headbutts were his main weapon, dirtiest boxer ever. Little old ref', two big crazy strong free swinging heavyweights not a good mix.
obviously u guys didn't know the build up to this fight.and thats what ali n patterson said, club fighter.....far from it

Dirty. He threw everything at buster in the dirty tactics handbook. From low blows to headbutts, boy was that ref stupid.

Chuvalo`s win over Quarry was a fluke. Jerry was in control got hurt with a hook them mistimed the count.

That headbutt Chuvalo did is up there with the flying heabutt Giardello tried against Fulmer on the list of blatant fouls.
